February Papertrey Ink Blog Hop . . . and Make It Monday Challenge

  • by

I loved Laurie Schmidlin’s Make It Monday post this week where she shared three cards with framed sentiments. When I looked at the February Blog Hop Challenge, I thought I could combine the two challenges. Here’s the cute photo inspiration for the blog hop; just perfect for an Easter card.

PTIbloghop-feb18

I love the glass bunny at the top of this table decoration, and thought I might be able to recreate that with vellum, but it just didn’t work well. In the end, I used a piece of polka-dot vellum over a white bunny with the eye dotted with a Sakura Glaze black pen.

Bunny

I used the same dies Laurie used for her first card on MIM, from the “A2 Scalloped” die set. The bunny, eggs, and flowers are all from the “Bunny Blessing” set. The flowers were die cut from some watercolored scraps in my scrap box, and the eggs stamped with Hawaiian Shores, Raspberry Fizz, and Bright Buttercup. The grass is a Jolee’s product that I luckily had in my stash.

BunnyClose

I didn’t have a pom-pom small enough for the bunny’s tail so I trimmed a larger one. It’s a little fluffier, but it looks like it will hold up.

The last addition was a few rainstones. Off to link up with Make It Monday, and to check out all the inspiration at Papertrey Ink’s blog hop.

Take Three Thursday: Storks

  • by

We’re home. It was a fabulous trip, and it far exceeded our expectations. Morocco is a country of great contrasts in geography, and incredibly rich in history and culture. I’m just beginning to sort through the 1500 photos I took over two weeks time. Granted many are duplicates, and many are easily tossed, but it’s going to take awhile to pare them down to a reasonable number to keep and print. I aim for about 100-150, although I’ll keep more than that for memories sake.

I thought I might use Mary-Lou’s meme, Take Three Thursday, to share a few isolated photos over the next few weeks. When I was growing up, one of my favorite books was The Wheel on the School When I read that storks were frequently seen in Morocco, I was hoping to see one. It didn’t take long. Our very first day in Rabat we visited the Chellah Kasbah, and there they were.

It rained most of the day in Rabat, but it didn’t diminish our enjoyment. It made for pretty dull looking skies in the photos, however.

It’s Valentine’s Day

  • by

It’s February 14th and Valentine’s Day. Little did I know I’d be celebrating in Casablanca, Morocco this year! It’s our last night here; we’ll be heading back to Chicago tomorrow morning. I made sure to have all the valentines made before we left. All the grandchildren got books this year in addition to their cards. And all five cards were made with the same design, the same stamps and dies. The only variation was the individual stamp chosen and the patterned papers—all from my stash.

The first three have cute little critters from Simon Says “Cuddly Critters,” attached with mini-Wobbly’s. If you touch the critter, it wobbles back and forth. I’ve seen people photograph them as they wobble, but I was too lazy to get out the tripod, and couldn’t get a sharp photo without it. The heart was die cut with MFT’s “Stitched Hearts.”

Both little girls got very similar valentines, no wobblys—I’ve learned the hard way they’d be pulled right off!

Here’s what the inside of the cards look like—colored in with Copics as were the critters.

InsideValentineKids

I also made valentines for Matt and Betsy, and Sarah and Adam, but in the rush to get ready to leave, I sealed them in envelopes before I took a photograph of them! I do have Tracy’s to share. It might be one of my all-time favorite cards. I love the stamp (Simon Says “Center Cut Heart,” and I love the color combination (PTI’s Soft Stone and Pure Poppy).

TracyHVD

The stamp is an unusual one. The center heart pops out. You can stamp it and add it back in or leave it open for a sentiment. I embossed the larger part of the stamp in white on the Soft Stone cardstock, and embossed the center heart in black. I colored just the tiny center heart with a red Copic marker.

All that was left to do was mount it on a Pure Poppy card. I love the graphic design of this stamp, and have several more ideas for using it.

Hope you’ve had a Happy Heart’s Day!

Recover!

  • by

Masculine cards are often the hardest to come up with, and get well cards seem especially challenging. A good friend fell a few weeks ago, and had to have major surgery to one of his legs. The recovery is going to be long and hard. I remembered I had an older Memory Box stamp (from the days when you could only purchase wooden stamps) that I thought might work.

Recover

I found a scrap of patterned paper that I fussy cut to paper piece the chair. Then I discovered that one of my newest stamp sets from Papertrey Ink, “Ways to Say: Get Well” had the absolutely perfect sentiment included. How lucky can you get?

RecoverClose

All that was left to do was to color the cup with a Copic marker.

Butterfly Hope

  • by

Awhile ago, a good friend loaned me her “Butterfly Hope” stamp set by Papertrey Ink. While I had it, and stamped a variety of butterflies and put them aside for a time when I needed a quick card. That time came last month when my friend’s daughter was in the hospital prior to her heart transplant.

Butterflies

I also had a stash of die cut “Horizontal Stripe Cover Plate” dies from a previous project. This one cut from Smoky Shadow was a nice contrast with the orange, yellow and black butterflies.

ButterflyClose

The sentiments in “The Skinny” fit perfectly between the die cut strips and are so versatile. Just a few black pearls from my long stockpiled Amuse pearls finished it off. I don’t know what I’ll do when I get to the end of those pearls! I have multiple sets in black and in red, and they are often just what I need.

Birthday Wishes

  • by

Two of my best friends had January birthdays, and I created very similar cards for them.

AltenewCards

The beautiful stamp is Altenew’s “Arabesque Medallion” stamp. Actually this is just half the stamp! I embossed it in gold, and then used Zig watercolor markers to color each one, choosing a redder color for the one on the left, and pink for the other.

AltenewGreen

Altenewpink

The sentiment, Papertrey’s “Banner Sentiments” was also embossed with gold. One card was adhered to a dark green textured paper in my stash (probably Bazzil) and the other to a Pink Hibiscus card. For once, I didn’t think either card needed any further embellishment.

I’ve had this stamp for several months, and was glad to finally put it to use. I have more ideas for it, so you’re sure to see it pop up again in a different form.

Five in five on the 5th

  • by

Greetings from Fez, Morocco! We’re here for a two week tour. Today was our third day here, and we spent the morning at Volubilis, the largest of the Romans’ 17 colonies established in Morocco between the first century BCE and the 2nd century CE. It poured rain on our drive from Rabat, but the sun began to shine just as we arrived at the site. The French excavated the ruins here, rebuilding several of the ruins piece by piece, during the early 20th century.

There are more photos to share, but not taken within 5 minutes. Internet here is slow, my keyboard for the iPad isn’t working, and this post has taken forever, so I’ll save the commentary for later. Linking up with Sandie at Itchifingers for her monthly 5 in 5 meme.

Crafty Friends: Part 2

  • by

Recently I posted a card for the CASe This Sketch challenge made with Simon Says February card kit. I made two other cards, both of which I sent across the pond. I know they’ve been delivered so I thought I’d share them as well.

Handcrafted2

Included in the card kit, along with the “Crafty Friend” stamp set was a set of patterned papers from Echo Park’s “I’d Rather Be Crafting” paper pad. I used both sides of one of the papers—the typewriter keys, and then fussy cut the little typewriters from the other side of the paper.

Handcrafted

I backed the wide strip of patterned paper with a piece of Tropical Teal paper (PTI) and die cut the sentiment with my often used Simon Says “Stitched Rectangles.” I can’t seem to get away from using those dies. I love the subtle interest they add to a card.

Hope you’re having a great weekend!

Crafty Friends and CASe This Sketch

  • by

The February Simon Says Card kit arrived on Thursday. Thanks to the fourth cancellation of a volunteer commitment in one week, I had time to play again. By bedtime, I had created three cards. I’m waiting until today to post the first of them, in hopes it has reached its recipient. Since it’s for a sketch challenge I need to get it posted.

When I first saw this design at CASe This Sketch it appeared too challenging, but once I laid eyes on the design team’s creations I decided I give it a try.

CTS_256

Initially I thought I’d use some patterned paper for the background, but once I die cut and stamped the seven pieces, I realized it would be far too busy. I am a fan of white on white and with the bright colors I think it works. I did move the sentiment to the left-hand corner where it fit perfectly.

Colorful

I added a few matte enamel dots as a finishing touch. It’s a fun stamp set, and perfect for sending off to some crafty friends of mine. Here’s a closer look.

This is such an unusual design, and the DT for this challenge came up with some brilliant ideas. You can check them out right here.

The Card Concept: Rustic Blooms

  • by

I’m back with a card for another challenge—this time The Card Concept: Rustic Blooms.

TCC85 0124

These beautiful pink flowers reminded me of the Simon Says “Floral Bliss” bouquet I used not long ago. This time I watercolored the whole image in pinks and reds.

PinkThoughts

When I finished, I decided to add a few dark pink splatters. I’ve been known to ruin an entire card trying this technique, but this time I pulled it off. I die cut the Tim Holtz watercolor panel with Simon Says “Stitched Rectangle,” and adhered it to a Raspberry Fizz card (PTI).

PinkThoughtsFlat

The sentiment is from Papertrey’s “It’s the Thought.” Finally, a few white pearls finished it off.

One of the challenges in entering a card at The Card Concept is deciding which category the card falls in. Nine out of ten times my cards usually land in the “Clean and Simple” category. Not so much this time. I’m guessing the best bet is “Classy and Elegant.” If you have time to check them out, I’d love to know how you’d categorize this one.

Celebrate! A Time Out Challenge

  • by

The current challenge at Time Out uses this quote:

Timeout gift quote

It’s one of my favorite quotes, and the perfect inspiration for a birthday card I needed to make for one of my favorite young ladies who will soon be 16. I’ve used the “Celebrate It” for my inspiration.

I’ve had this stunning image from Concord and 9th (“Happy Day”) for a long time, but this is the first time I’ve used it. I stamped it in black on Tim Holtz watercolor card and got out my Daniel Smith watercolors.

NadiaFlat

I have an iridescent silver which I mixed with the bright pink which gives it a pretty glimmer. I added some Glitter Glue to the frosting as well.

NadiaClose1

I die cut the image with one of the Simon Says “Stitched Rectangles” and mounted it on a piece of sparkly textured cardstock I found in my stash. (I have no idea where it came from!) The final touch was to add a few sequins. We’re going to be out of town for the birthday party, but I’m leaving the card with her mom. I hope she likes it.

You’ll find other celebratory cards right here at the Time Out Challenges blog.

Janurary 2018 Papertrey Ink Blog Hop (And Make It Monday)

  • by

Very unusual, but this is the second post of the day because today is the monthly blog hop hosted by Papertrey Ink. I wasn’t sure I’d find the time to participate, but then a meeting I had yesterday had to be rescheduled, and the afternoon opened up. I have two cards to share. Only one can be posted for the blog hop, but the other I’ll post for the Make It Monday challenge which was to create a shadow sentiment. Both cards started, however, with the gorgeous inspiration piece posted for the blog hop.

PTIIce-Cream-Social-Birthday-Party

For the first card, I focused on the pink floral arrangements on the table. I was also influenced by the design Lizzie Jones used on her card for Make It Monday.

Gran'sGarden

I chose “Gran’s Garden” for the card. It’s a stamp set I don’t use often enough. The frame for the sentiment is an old favorite, “Fillable Frames 10,” and the sentiment is from another favorite and well-used set “Birthday Bash Sentiments.:

Gran'sGardenClose

Here you can see the shadow sentiment. I tried a variety of things before I settled on second generation stamping to create the shadow. If you’re unfamiliar with that term it means I stamped the original sentiment, then moved the stamp just a bit, and stamped it again without cleaning off the stamp. You can also see the embossed background created with the Papertrey Ink “Rustic Burlap” Impression Plate.

I thought this would be the only card I created, and that I would post it on both challenges, but still having some time to play, I pulled out a stamp set I purchased on a whim. It’s a $5 set meant to work with a larger set of paper doll kinds of stamps called “Dress Up Dolls: Birthday.” I thought the images would go well with a variety of animal stamp sets I use when creating cards for my grandchildren. The new technique for me was to create a background of randomly stamped images. I’ve seen a variety of these recently, most often on Yana Smakula’s blog.

She suggested that solid images would work best for this technique, but I’m pretty happy with the way the outline images worked here. It makes for a bit cleaner look, which I always like. Rather than a large center-stage sentiment, I opted to die cut the balloons from the set for the focal image.

PartyBalloons

I did take Yana’s suggestion to assign each stamp a given color which I took from the inspiration photo, as well as the birthday party theme shown in the inspiration piece. Since there were so many tiny images I laid out the stamps on the ink pads I used. I took the photo after dark with my iPhone, but thought I’d share it.

InkPads

I chose four Copic markers to color the balloons, but decided they needed a coating of Glitter Glue as well. Glitter Glue always darkens the colors so the darker pink ended up looking more red that I would have liked. I mounted the balloons with dimensional adhesive, and finally decided to add a sentiment to the focal image. It came from the “Initial Sentiments: Birthday” set.

PartyBalloonsClose

It’s a bit easier to see the glitter here as well as the glitter added to the sentiment banner with a Spectrum Noir clear glitter pen.

So I’ll post the top card to the Make It Monday challenge, and this one to today’s blog hop. It was a lot of fun to try a couple new techniques, and I was delighted to have an afternoon to play!

Take Three Thursday: Sledding

  • by

I’m joining in again with Mary-Lou’s Take Three Thursday meme:

In an effort to notice more of the ordinary in my life, I have decided to share what I have noticed this week in Take Three Thursday.   The idea is to take photos that are linked some how; by theme, by colour, by date, by moment,  by points of view.

We had a couple beautiful sunny days over the weekend. It wasn’t warm enough for serious snow melt, but definitely warm enough for sledding. Colgate Divinity School sits atop a hill at the end of our street. It has the perfect hill for sledding, steep enough to get good speed, but a long flat yard at the bottom to avoid any disasters. Matt brought Skyar (6) and  Ella (3) up for an hour or two of sledding, and I walked down to join them. I didn’t have any intention of sledding myself, but they were having so much fun, I ended up going down with Skylar before I walked home. Sadly (or luckily), Matt didn’t manage to get a photo of the two of us going down the hill.

They brought three sleds–two plastic ones, and one large inflatable one. Here’s Skylar ready to take off down the hill.

IMG_7808ed

And much to our surprise, Ella wanted to go down on her own. She loved it!

IMG_7804ed

Somehow I never ended up with a photo of the two of them going down the hill on the big inflatable sled. Coming up the hill is the hardest part. Ella managed a couple of times with Skylar’s help, but finally needed Dad to help her out.

IMG_7812ed

Matt and Sarah spent time sliding down this hill when they were kids. It’s fun to watch the next generation enjoying it as well!

Winter Cards

  • by

I needed two cards—one for a young lady (18) who had just had a heart transplant (very successful, thankfully) and another for a winter birthday. I thought I’d pull out a new die (MFT’s “Solid Birch Trees”) and a new stamp (PTI’s “Background Basics: Birch”). It’s a perfect combination for a winter-themed card.

BirchX2

I die cut the trees from white cardstock and stamped them with the background stamp in Soft Stone. The little red bird is an older die from Memory Box, “Goldfinch.” Finding the right sentiments took the longest time. I originally thought I’d stamp a message on the right side of the card, but ended up liking these two Papertrey Ink dies from “Swoosh” better which I die cut from True Black.

BirchbarkHello

The last touch was to had a tiny drop of black Nuvo Crystak Drops for the eye of the bird. It’s nice when a design works well for two such different occasions.

The Flower Challenge: Spotlight Stamping

  • by

The Flower Challenge is new to me, and so is the current challenge: spotlight stamping where you selectively color just part of an image. I needed an encouragement card, and thought this would be a good time to try it out.

TFChallenge#16

I chose one of my favorite stamp sets from the Simon Says Card Kits. “Floral Bliss” from the June 2017 kit has such a gorgeous floral bouquet. I stamped it with India Ink Black on Tim Holtz watercolor paper and got out my Inktense watercolor pencils.

SelectiveColoring2

The sentiment is from Papertrey Ink’s “It’s the Thought.” I chose to color the three main flowers and the two sprays above in pinks with orange accents. I thought a bit more orange was in order so I color just the centers of the daisies.  The final touch was to add three black pearls by Amuse.

SelectiveColoringFlat

I’m quite sure I wouldn’t have give this technique any thought without the challenge, but I’m quite happy with it in the end. Check out how others approached the challenge right here
