Five in Five: May Edition

  • by

It’s May 5th, and I’m here to join in with Sandie at Itchifingers with her Five in Five meme on the 5th, no less! The goal is to take as many photos as you want in 5 minutes and choose 5 to post. It rained all day today, but finally stopped around dinner time, and lightened up for a little bit. I grabbed the camera and went out in the yard to find some signs that show that spring is definitely here.

The first photo is actually one of Gerber daisies that were purchased at the grocery store. It’s a good size container with three brilliant colored daisies—all for $7. It’s finally warm enough to keep a planter like this outside.

Next up, one of the last of the daffodils. Tulips are in bloom in many yards, but the deer eat ours every year, so we’ve stopped planting them.

Our rhododendron is as beautiful as I can ever remember it. We had a less severe winter this year, so I’m wondering if that’s why it’s so lush. We have another one that is just budding now.

As I was taking photographs, a large bee showed up. “Buzz” was a prompt for the Project 365 in April, so I’ll be posting this one for today. It’s like the scavenger hunts. Even when I can’t find it on time, I keep looking, and usually I find what I’m looking for eventually.

Finally, a shot of the hostas which are coming up as well.

There’s nothing but rain in the forecast for Rochester. Well, a snowflake is the icon for one of my weather apps for Monday. But we’ll be in Chicago by then which (unusually) seems to have a much brighter forecast for the next week. I’m anxious to hold that baby girl that we last saw when she was 3 1/2 weeks old, and to catch up with Caleb, Sarah, and Adam.

  1. I’m glad the rain stopped long enough for you to get into the garden, it is looking very colourful, Karen! Another ‘Fiver’ posted about her garden too and it seems they have had on going downpours in Canada too. The weather seems out of sorts wherever we live. Here in UK we had the driest April in decades. Like your rain, I this will affect growth later in the season. What does make me smile is that, despite the geological distance, we each have daffodils in bloom. They immediately make me think of Spring and the start of warmer weather.
My daughter had Gerbera’s at her wedding, as bouquets for her bridesmaids. They are such a hearty flower and beautiful colours. They must certainly make an impact in your garden. And your bee is a lovely shot – glad you caught one on camera even if it is later than you wanted. They are not seen as often as they used, sadly.
Thank you for joining in this month. I loved your collection and must go and look for my own hostas. I used to have lots and wonder if the slugs have eaten them?!

  2. Your pictures look beautiful and that is a great capture of the bee on the rhododendron. My mum has issues with deer eating all sorts in her garden including tulips, roses, lavatera to name but a few. She does net some plants to keep the little (or not so little) nibblers at bay.

  3. I’m not a fan of hostas but yours looks wonderful, really beautiful. And so nice to see a late daff. I’d love to trade you some rain – anything I can offer?

  4. Karen your rhododendron is gorgeous & I am quite envious that you have room for two! Thankfully local deer do not choose to dine in my yard but it’s the squirrels that take my tulips although I cannot complain because they replant others they have borrowed from another garden. We still are not warm enough even during the day to keep annuals outside yet. Those gerberas are wonderful, such cheery flowers. Hope there is lots of cuddle time in Chicago.

  5. Great photos and congrats for getting the five on five! And how fortunate that a bee decided to join in the shoot too!
Have a great and safe trip to Chicago and do enjoy being with your family, especially the littles.
    Cheers~
PS. I hope the “snow season” is over til next Dec…

  6. Your photo reminds me that I need to look into hostas for our front shrub bed … needing something hardy and low maintenance… Hope you really enjoy your time in Chicago with your other grandbabies!

  7. When I first saw your beautiful pictures, I thought you had captured them at a local Botanical Garden!
You have quite the green thumb and must have a special acidic soil for the Rhododendron to strive!
Bravo!! Give me a shout if you have time for a cup of tea while in Chi-Town!
    xx
