Cheryl McCain comes up with a new and interesting challenge every week for Frugal Still Life. I’m really enjoying this class. Still life is something that has always interested me, but I haven’t taken the necessary time to explore it. I’ve had a book on my Kindle Still Life Photography by Kevin Best for over a year now, but haven’t even started it. I’m quite sure I’ll get to it once this class ends. This week’s challenge was to explore complementary colors. As soon as I read the lesson, I knew I’d get out this beautiful blue bowl Sarah brought me from Mexico and fill it with tangerines. I picked up a dish towel at Target the other day which made a nice background. As usual, I played around with different perspectives, and I’m always interested in which ones appeal to you.
Here’s what the set-up looked like this week. I was back in the kitchen for good light, and used a little black board I purchased as a backdrop for photographing cards to drap the kitchen towel.
I love number 4. Great focus; appropriate amount of white space. I”d like number one if you put a quote on it! LOL! That could be my new motto – instead of “put a bird on it” – “put a quote on it.”

These are lovely. The blue bowl goes so well with the bright oranges. Photo #2 & 4 are my favorites. I like the towel you place them on as well.
This time I’d have to go with #4. I think the perspective gives the best play of light off the tangerines. Great subject choice!
Oh my goodness I love #1. The leading lines of the dishcloth take your eye directly to your lovely blue bowl and the bright color of the tangerines! LOVE it!
Oh my! the first one is perfect for me. The lines on the cloth were an inspired choice Karen
Hi Karen,
I love all your photos – the deep blue and the orange tangerines just match!
The first imege, with the negative space, and the beautiful cotton cloth with the yellow stripe below … that woule be mine favorite, if I’d had to choose.
Thank you for the tip of the book in Still Life – I’ll write it down 🙂
I like #1 best: it’s so “neat” that it’s almost symmetrical! Does that make sense at all? And your colors are wonderful. I also like #3 as I always fall for a macro shot! I’m hoping to get a macro lens very soon: just in time for spring and all my flowers…
Great shots – my favorite is the second one!
Orange and blue do compliment each other so well! Nicely done!
I love the first shot myself. Lots of lovely white space! These photos are really pretty, Karen. Love the orange with the blue bowl!
