Notepads

  • by

I was asked to create some notepads to be given as gifts. Since I don’t know the recipients, I decided to make some extras so there would be some choice. I like having a few on hand myself. I’m not terribly happy with the photos for this post, but I’m still trying to figure out the best place in the new studio to take photos. I thought they were fine, took the notepads off to my friend, and then wished I had checked the photos more carefully. They were all taken in exactly the same spot with the same light, but it sure doesn’t look that way. Here’s a look at three of them.

3Notepadsw
And a close up view of the focal images on six of them. I had a lot of fun mixing up the stamp sets and finding images that would work with the sentiment stamps. I found a flower in Beautiful Blooms II, one of the labels in Vintage Labels, and a tag image in Tags for Spring that worked really well.  All the stamps are Papertrey Ink.

NotepadDetailCollage
Most of the papers are also Papertrey Ink. The first pad in this group uses Basic Grey “Kioshi” papers, and the last one uses Cosmos Cricket “Delovey” papers. All the buttons are Papertrey Ink, and the pearls/gems are from my stash.

Aside from trying to find the right light to take photos, the new studio is proving to be very efficient. I LOVE working in here. I have so much more work space and everything is so convenient. It’s the perfect space for me. We’re still finishing up the details. A new track lighting fixture arrived from Pottery Barn this week and needs to be installed. My fold-up Ikea table and printer’s drawer need to be moved into the new space, and then I think we’re done. Photos should be coming next week, I hope.

We’re off to Filmore State Park this afternoon for our annual three days of camping with good friends. Our friends found this spot earlier this year, and I’m looking forward to a new place to explore.

Team-up Thursday: Old

  • by

This week’s prompt was “old” and Nancy and I both chose to photograph heirloom objects from our family. Mine is a watch that belonged to my grandmother. For quite a few years after I inherited it, it worked perfectly and I wore it occasionally. I was always afraid I would dent the case. The last time I had it repaired, it kept accurate time for only a brief time. I love the beautiful chain with the trio of opals. The Methodist Hymnal also belonged to my grandmother. She died before my parents were married so I never knew her. Her portraits make her appear to be a very stern woman, but my father was devoted to her so I imagine that she was more personable than her pictures make her appear.

The beaded bag in Nancy’s photo dates from early 1900’s,  the small gold watch from late 1800’s and belonged to her grandmother, the paisley shawl was used as a throw on Nancy’s grandparent’s piano in the front parlor ( late 1800’s), the doll still has her original wig and costume. It was given to Nancy’s mother by her uncle when she was about six (1916ish). The canaries are Victorian and are housed in a glass dome which Nancy removed for the photo. Finally, the wind-up tin toy, called Ham and Sam. The toy was given to my mom and her brother (1910-1920). Ham and Sam jump up and down and clap their hands when the toy is wound up.

I ran Pioneer Woman’s Heartland action on my photo and reduced the opacity to 37%.

Papertrey Blog Hop

Bloghoplogo

It’s been a couple of months since I’ve been able to participate in a Papertrey Ink Blog Hop. I always enjoy them and am glad to be around this month. Here’s the August challenge:

PTIBlogHop

This challenge was a lot of fun and I ended up making two different bags and a card to accompany one of them.

BagCardCombo

I placed the Beautiful Blooms dies inside the bag and ran them through my Cuttlebug and then layered the paper from Green Boutique and Library Ledger behind them. The buttons are all from the Holiday Mix collection, and I tied some button twine through each of them. The ribbon bow is Aqua Mist satin. For the card I used papers from the same collections on a Kraft card with Ripe Avocado mats. The Nestability label is Scrap-Mart’s new Oval/Square which I cut and embossed, and added a sentiment from Friendship Jar Fall Fillers (which arrived in yesterday’s mail). The felt flowers are cut with Hawaiian Shores and Vintage Cream felt. I inked all the edges of the cardstock and patterned papers with the Camomile Tea Dye. Here’s a closer look at the bag and the card:

Card

I’ve wanted to try and make a pinwheel for ages. You need double-sided paper for this, and since Papertrey’s papers are all single sided I used my Xyron to glue together two coordinating papers from Autumn Abundance. It makes for a thicker paper, but it worked just fine.

PinwheelBag
The stick and brad are from my stash. I purchased a package of these sticks years ago for another project. The sentiment is from Vintage Picnic Sentiments, one of my favorite Papertrey sets.

Thanks for looking, and enjoy the blog hopping!

Yes, that’s right, it’s plural. Sarah and Adam are expecting twins!! We’ve known for a while, but they didn’t want anything to get out before they told their congregation yesterday. We are all very excited, but evidently twice the hormones equals more than one share of morning sickness. Thus my trip to California earlier this month. Although it’s actually worse at night than in the morning, Sarah is beginning to feel a bit better. Hopefully, it will clear up soon as she has a busy schedule this fall taking two classes at Berkeley and teaching one at San Francisco Seminary. We are so excited for them and for us!!!

Early this morning I thought there’d be a bouquet of balloons gracing this post. I looked out our window about 3 am and saw a huge bouquet of balloons tied to one of our yard decorations in the front. Sadly, the wind and rain blew half of them away by the time it was light, although I did rescue the second bunch from the driveway. I think I know who the balloon ladies are, but if there was a note, it also disappeared.

On another front, the studio move is nearly complete. There is just one large and one small job left to do, but I am in my new space (photos later when it’s all done) and loving it. It feels very extravagant to have such a beautiful, large space just for me. Matt says the change makes so much better use of the space, and I think he’s right. The little room where I’ve worked for the last 7-8 years really looks tiny now that I’m out of there. We need to paint that room, and buy a bookcase and perhaps, a small coffee table and then we’ll be done. Everything is put away for now.

Neither of my hutches from the old desk worked on the new one, so I had more organizing and purging to do over the weekend. Everything has a home now, and there’s still way too much stuff for one crafter. I’d love to have you come over and share!

Here’s the last of the cards I made before the move. (You can’t have a post without some photos!) The first one is a definite lift of a card I saw on Dawn McVey’s blog last week and just had to copy.

Team-up Thursday: BIG

  • by

This week’s prompt is big, and it’s no surprise that I chose a tomato to photograph. We planted four heirloom tomato plants and the fruit is huge! It amazes me that the tomatoes manage to hang onto the plant. Nancy found these incredible bales of hay in Yates County this week. Makes for an interesting pair, although I wish I had thought to have a frame of reference for the tomato as Nancy has for the bales of hay. I guess you’ll have to take my word for it.

Tomatoes and Moving

  • by

I feel like my life is consumed by tomatoes and moving. Little by little we’re getting my studio moved to the bigger space. We’ve just about done as much as we can now until the desk and new lateral file cabinet arrive,. Hopefully tomorrow, more likely on Friday. I found new valences for the studio, and like the pattern, but they need to be shortened. For now I’ve left them up and will take care of it when the rest is done. I think I have everything I need for the studio, but I’m quite sure we’re going to need a bookcase and perhaps a table for the den. It’s so hard to tell until my current desk is out of there. I’m hoping the hutches on the current desk will fit and look OK on the new one. The hutch that could have been ordered with the new desk was too wide for the wall space I have.

As for tomatoes, we picked another 17 pounds yesterday and canned more sauce today. Tomorrow we’ll need to go back to the garden again, and I’m going to try another batch of salsa–a little milder this time.

Saucew

When I went out on the patio to take a photo for tomorrow’s Team-up Thursday post, I saw that our hibiscus was blooming again. It’s such a beautiful plant and blooms pretty continuously all summer.

I did get a layout completed today, but haven’t had a chance to photograph it. But here are a couple of cards that I haven’t posted. The first is for a friend whose husband passed away recently.

Classes & Cards

  • by

There are two free classes going on right now. I’ve been reading the posts and downloading the pdfs, but haven’t had time to participate yet. Both are very worthwhile, so if you’re not aware of them it’s worth checking them out. The first is at Big Picture Scrapbooking and is called the Festival of Ideas. Each day a new lesson is posted by one of their instructors and there have been a couple of great projects. You can still register and all the lessons are archived.

Bigideafestival

The second is a free class on journaling at Elle’s Studio. Like Festival of Ideas, each day brings a new instructor with ideas and beautiful samples of their work. Ali Edwards, Lisa Dickenson, and Christine Middlecamp are just three of the people who have posted lessons so far. This is a three week course and there’s a link on the sidebar so you can access just the posts for the course.

Once I get into my new space, I hope to get some work done based on both these classes and the weekend crop at Shimelle’s which I totally missed.

I do have a few cards to share that I created before all the craziness began. One of my dear friends is having surgery on Monday, and I was glad that I had this card on hand.

A Fine Weekend

  • by

We had a busy weekend, but a productive one. We’re in the midst of switching two rooms upstairs so I will have a bit more space in my studio and more light. It seems like it should be a simple process, but it involves reconfiguring two closets, sorting and purging two rooms full of “stuff,” and moving a lot of furniture. I was hoping we’d be done by now, but when I went to purchase the new desk and lateral files, they had to be ordered. They should arrive by Friday. In the meantime, we’re trying to get done what we can, little by little. Matt commented tonight that every day he comes home from work there’s a bigger mess than the day before. Sigh. There’s some truth to that since we needed to box up everything in the bookcases in both rooms. The piles grow higher every day. Compared to Amy, we have very little disruption so I’m definitely not complaining here.

Meanwhile at the garden, the tomatoes are prolific. We have to go to the garden every other day now to pick the ripe tomatoes so they don’t fall to the ground and rot. Here is what we picked on Wednesday. We picked as much or more on Friday and Sunday.

BasketTomatoesw

Beansw

We have lots of beans as well. They are a bit harder to deal with than the tomatoes since
I’m not a fan of canned beans, and we really don’t have much available
freezer space. I found a great sweet mustard dressing for the beans for
dinner tonight. Tracy says it’s the best he’s ever had.

CannedGoodsw

We’ve been making tomato sauce, salsa, and oven dried tomatoes in olive
oil (for fabulous appetizers). There’s a small jar of pesto as well. We
haven’t canned in many
years, and I’d forgotten how many tomatoes it takes to make a quart of
sauce. (And how long!) For the first time ever, I ran into a bit of a
problem chopping up the jalapenos for the salsa.  I’ve never used gloves in the past,
but I’ll never do it again without them. I ended up with burning fingers
that were painful off and on for over a day! Ruined a contact lens as
well. When I googled for remedies, I found quite the list, none of which
seemed to take care of it. Time, as in many things, is what was needed.
I did read one woman’s story. Her fingers blistered, and she had to go
to the emergency room!

Since I was away on our  37th anniversary we celebrated it this weekend by going on a flea market/antique shopping jaunt (thanks, Tracy!) ending up in Canandaigua at Rio Tomatlan. I read a review of this Mexican restaurant that rated it the “best in the country.” Better, the reviewer said, than Rick Bayless’s restaurant, Frontera, in Chicago. I was curious to make my own comparison since we ate at Frontera a year ago. I have to agree, Rio Tomatlan is the best Mexican food I’ve ever had. It was, in fact, one of the best meals I’ve had anywhere in a very long time.

I found some great new items for my studio at the antique shops. Most were less than ten dollars, and some less than five. I picked up two colored Mason jars for storage, and I loved this little wire basket which is perfect for holding my Papertrey felt.

WireBasketw

I also picked up two old cameras. One for the book shelves in the living room, and one for my studio. I’d like to have a collection of old cameras some day. These were both very inexpensive. The little one is on the shelf with all my photography books in the new studio.

AnscoColorw

I like the black and white conversion for this photo as well.

AnscoB&Wweb

My last find was a red wooden box. I was immediately attracted to it since red is my favorite color, but when I read the tag “patented card box” I knew it was mine. I’m not sure exactly what I’ll use it for, but I know I’ll find a good use for it.

CardBoxw

Finally, I broke down and bought an iPhone, and I’m very glad I did.
I’ve just scratched the surface of what I can do with it, but since I’ve
had an iPod Touch for a couple of years, it’s a pretty simple switch.

Back tomorrow with some new cards.

Team-up Thursday: Morning

  • by

This week’s prompt was “morning” and I knew what I wanted to do, but it was a struggle. I ended up with three versions of my photo but settled on the one with the texture from Kim Klassen. I’m still trying to perfect this technique. It was taking so long, I finally had to just quit and live with it.

MorningDiptych
My breakfast on the left; Nancy’s take-out window on the right.

It’s taking a couple of days to get readjusted after all the traveling I’ve been doing. There have been lots of appointments, unpacking, jet lag to overcome, and serious efforts at organizing for moving my office/studio. I have another post to do after dinner but wanted to be sure this post was up–late as it is.

Cards for Scrap-Mart

Before I left for CHA I made some cards to take with me. Laura and Howard wanted cards they could display in the Scrap-Mart booths. They particularly wanted cards that used Nestabilities so most of these do.

CHA Consumer Super Show

  • by

The CHA trade show started on Monday and went through Thursday. I spent Tuesday and Wednesday there. Cruising the show as Howard and Laura met with the manufacturers to decided what they will order was truly an education on what it takes to produce and create the products that we all love seeing hit the  scrapbook stores. On Thursday Howard, Deb, and I set up the Scrap-Mart booth for the CHA Consumer Super Show. I think the last time I worked this hard was the day we moved into our current house about 25 years ago.

We started by unloading Howard’s truck. It was packed solid from floor to roof, and that was just a small portion of the product that was delivered to the booth.

Truckw

It took almost 11 hours to go from this:

EmptyBoothw
To this:

SMsetupw

And it still wasn’t quite done when I snapped this shot. Scrap-Mart carries a wide range of products. Deb and I unpacked, checked off, priced, and hung the new Making Memories display of Vintage Jewelry.

VintageFindingsw

This shot shows the Spellbinders display. Beyond that is a wall of Just-Rite, then Making Memory Slice, Eclipse machines and supplies, Xyron machines and supplies, the Vintage Findings display, American Crafts papers, Thickers, and embellishments, then Copic and Triart markers, as well as the Cuttlebug and Cuttlebug products. Tables held piles of American Craft cardstock.

SMSetup5

I had seen a Scrap-Mart booth twice before—once in Buffalo where I first discovered Scrap-Mart and then in March in Pleasanton, CA when I first met Howard and Laura, the owners. I remember being overwhelmed in March by the amount of product, but never gave much thought to how it got set up. Now I know. On Friday and Saturday we manned the booth. Friday was incredibly busy and we never sat down from the time we arrived at the convention center about 9:00 am to finish pricing and setting up, to noon when the show opened and to 8:00 that night when the show ended for the day.

Saturday wasn’t quite as busy so I was able to visit the Papertrey Ink booth, pick up some stamps and supplies, and do a Make & Take with Dawn McVey.

This is a view down the aisle at the Super Show. It was really fortunate for my budget that I didn’t have time to shop any of the other booths.

SuperShoww

It was a great show, and despite the hard work, I had a great time. I was really tired by the time I got home, so I have to admit it’s been very nice to be here at Sarah’s this week where I can just hang out and relax.

Photo Cards

  • by

Right before I left for Chicago, I needed to create some photo cards. A few weeks prior, I had picked up some Museum Parchment inkjet paper for just such a project. I’m very happy with the way they came out. I love the texture of the Museum Parchment paper. I’ve had the embossed photo cards for years and have no idea where I got them or who manufactured them. I wish I knew because I’d like to purchase some more.

For the first time Nancy and my photographs really couldn’t be fit into a diptych so I made a little canvas for them. The top one is mine and was taken on our boat before I left for Chicago. I’m not sure where Nancy found this beautiful umbrella.

CHA: Part 2

  • by

There were lots of things I liked about attending CHA:  seeing new product, spotting folks I know through the internet, looking at fabulous sample layouts and cards, getting demos of new products, doing make & takes, and looking at the wonderful booth designs. I left my make & takes at home when I came to California so I’ll have to save those for a later post. I’ll also have another post about the CHA Consumer Super Show.

Here are some of the things I liked at CHA:

The display and the product for 7Gypsies Conservatory Collection:

7GypsiesCollage

7GypsiesConservatory

7GypsiesSamples

I did a great make & take at the Teresa Collins booth. Here new collections—Freestyle, Celebrate, and Noel–are at the top of my wish list for the fall. Strangely enough I only took photos of the stamps for two of the sets. If you click on the link it will take you to one of her blog posts that shows the papers. I loved the papers, the tags, the transparencies, the stamps . . . the whole package!

It was fun to watch everyone crowd around Tim Holtz at the Ranger booth.

This was a display at the Ranger booth. There were so many great vintage items displayed with the new products.

I liked this one at Little Yellow Bicycle that highlighted their new Savor line.

The Doodlebug booth was about as cute as any at the show, and their products exude cuteness too!

We got an amazing demo at the Sizzix booth on how to cut folded papers into fabulous shapes using their dies.

Just-Rite Stamps had shelf after shelf of beautiful samples. I came home with an Autumn Blessings set I can’t wait to ink up.

I did a Make & Take at Hero Arts with Sheri Carroll; so much fun to “meet” the folks you “see” on blogs week after week.

HAMake&Take

Here are a couple stamps sets I particularly liked from their new designs.

HAStamps1w

HAStamps2

Studio Calico has some great new products coming out. I’ve already pre-ordered some of their new mists including a white opaque one. These rub-ons go on like butter. I did a make & take here as well.

SCRubons

Some of my favorite samples were at the Girls Paperie booth. I wasn’t alone; it was really hard to get close enough to take a photo.

There was so much to see and take in that it can be overwhelming. Everyone was talking about how small this show was compared to the winter show. It was plenty big for me, and certainly was not a disappointment!

Happy Birthday, Sarah!

  • by

I got home from CHA and the CHA Super Show late Saturday night. On Sunday, I decided to fly out to California to spend a week with Sarah. Adam is off on a mission trip, and Sarah wasn’t feeling well enough to go, so Tracy suggested I come. You didn’t have to ask me twice. I arrived yesterday. Both of us are delighted, and it was great to be here for her 30th birthday today.

She got her “big” gift when we were here in March—plants and pots for a garden which is doing quite nicely. She has tomatoes, beans, strawberries, basil, peppers, zucchini, and some other herbs and flowers. Before I knew I would be here, I sent a couple of gifts to be opened on the real day. The first was a book she and I saw at Disneyland in March called The Princess Handbook. It’s a really cute picture book with quite good instructions on how to be a princess. She’s actually been practicing for 30 years now. The second was a journal Tracy and I found on our recent road trip. When we saw it, we both thought of her.

Journal
Of course, you can’t have the journal without the tiara and the cape. I was hoping she’d be with a group of high school kids when she opened it, but it was just me. Nonetheless Sadie and I enjoyed the whole thing.

SarahSadie2w

You can’t have a birthday without a cake, so we went to Nothing Bundt Cakes today. Just as we were about to pay for our purchase, Sarah spotted Bundtinis and we changed our order. We have a dozen tiny cakes in four flavors: White White Chocolate, White Chocolate Raspberry, Chocolate Chocolate Chip, and Cinnamon Swirl.

Cakesw

And here’s the card I sent her. It’s a close lift of a card I saw on Melissa Phillips blog a long time ago. As soon as I saw it, I knew this would be Sarah’s birthday card and I ordered the wooden crown from the Etsy shop linked in Melissa’s post.

SarahBD10
It’s been a whirlwind week. I have two more posts to get up about CHA. I finished editing the photos today, so hopefully tomorrow I’ll have time to do some writing too. Sarah and I are off for pedicures and manicures tomorrow morning, and perhaps to the mall afterwards. This visit is a gift for me as much as it is for her!
