Zoom In, Zoom Out On Something Wrong

  • by

I don’t think we’re supposed to get snow when some of the trees have yet to lose any of their leaves. But that’s what happened this week. And I’m not complaining, because we ended up with just a couple inches over two days, and Buffalo (60 miles to our west) has up to 6 feet of snow! I was lazy and didn’t get out to take photos early in the morning when it was much more beautiful, but here’s what the street looked like early in the afternoon.

Even after two days of snow and wind, most of the leaves on these trees and others on the street are still on the tree!

Enjoy!

I had to take a break from my online class assignments this weekend to make cards for upcoming birthdays, anniversaries, and to send to some friends needing some encouragement.

CardStack

Now there’s a bit of fodder for future blog posts as well. Two of the cards used a silver metallic paper I bought last winter from Michael’s for my Christmas Journal pages and I thought I’d get them posted (just under the wire) for the current Virginia’s View Challenge: All Things Metallic.

Enjoy!

I started out die cutting Papertrey Ink’s Phrase Play #4 with the silver paper. After backing the “Enjoy” with black paper, and adding a strip of black and white polka-dot paper, I angled it on an Hawaiian Shores card, stamped the remainder of the sentiment and added a few sequins.

I then had the letter from the negative in the Phrase Play die, so made a second card with the same card base.

Enjoy

This time I used a black strip of paper to add some interest to the silver letters, a stamped ampersand from “Grand Ampersand”, and “Celebrate” from “Wet Paint II” (all PTI).

EnjoyClose

I’ve always loved that ampersand stamp, but this is the first time I’ve been able to put it to good use.

It’s amazing how fast things can change. A week ago today we broke record high temperatures (near 80°). Today we have near record low temperatures with a wind chill of 7°. Fortunately, we did not get the record snows just west of us. My friend’s son has over 5 feet of snow in his driveway, and it’s still snowing. The Thruway is closed from here to the Pennsylvania border! I hope it all gets cleared up before folks need to travel for next week’s Thanksgiving holiday.

Yea, for Retirement!

  • by

One of my best friends retired October 1st. We went out to breakfast the first morning of her retirement and I gave her the retirement card I’d made then. Last week a group of us took her out to dinner. Each of us chose a different Alex and Ani bracelet to give her, and I made a tag to match the Alex and Ani bag.

TagClose

The black tag was in my draw of tags, but I’m not sure who made it. The “Congrats” die is a new one from Penny Black that I’ve been eyeing for a long time, and picked up at Buffalo Stamps and Stuff in early October. That, a few gold sequins, and some gold & black twine (also in my stash) was all I needed.

CongratsBag

As I told her the day she retired, the best I can wish her is that she will enjoy retirement as much as I have. I really had no idea how wonderful it would be!

With Sympathy

  • by

Recently, a good friend of mine lost her mother. Another friend and I drove to Elmira for the funeral. It was a beautiful funeral mass that celebrated a long life, well lived. I thought Papertrey Ink’s “Mums the Word” would make a lovely fall sympathy card.

Sympathy

I stamped the mums with Terra Cotta Tile ink and the off-stamped them for the shadow images. The sentiment is a very old wooden stamp from Savvy. The stamped panel was “framed” with Terra Cotta Tile paper and adhered to a card made from Ripe Avocado cardstock.

Although there are still many leaves on the trees, it’s beginning to feel more like winter than fall. There was enough snow to stick to the ground for a little while. I’m not ready.

A Baby is Coming!

  • by

In about ten days, we’ll be welcoming the newest member of our family. Matt and Betsy are expecting another little girl, and her due date is November 24th. Recently, a small group of friends and family “sprinkled” Betsy with some love and some “fun gifts.” Here’s the card I created to go with the plush bunny I purchased for her.

ShowerCard

This was a quick and easy card using two stamps sets from Mama Elephant: “Carnival Cupcakes” and “Sentimental Borders.” I cut out the little bunny and adhered it with some dimensional tape, added a few pink pearl hearts by Hero Arts, and called it done.

Looking forward to seeing some friends over the weekend, and relaxing—-almost no commitments for three days!

Zoom In, Zoom Out on the Mastodon

  • by

This afternoon I went to the Rochester Museum and Science Center on a sketching assignment. I can’t say I was terribly happy with my progress for the assignment, but I did enjoy wandering around the museum. It’s been quite a few years since I’ve been there. The mastodon exhibit is quite something. About 15 years ago or so, mastodon bones were found in a field not far from Rochester. My neighbor is a palentologist, and the Director of Collections at the museum. He was responsible for the excavation of the skeleton.  After it was completed, he came to talk to my fifth graders who were absolutely fascinated by his experience—and the bones he brought to show them!

IMG_7159ed_blog

I just had my iPhone with me, and couldn’t get a good zoom in of the skeleton, but was more successful with the model Mastodon across the way.

IMG_7160ed_blog

The two men walking by the exhibit give a good sense of the size of the mastodon.

It’s hard to imagine a herd of mastodons roaming about in this area, but indeed, they did.

Zoom In, Zoom Out on the Fall Hydrangea

  • by

It’s been a wild, hardly been home, wet (with snow showers!) week. Finally, yesterday morning Tracy and I got out for a walk and I brought my camera hoping for a good subject for ZIZO. I found it in a neighbor’s yard: their beautiful oak leaf hydrangea.

I’m looking forward to a week that’s a bit quieter, but still too busy, and time to get to some sketching assignments, some Christmas cards, and Project Life. It’s been way too long since I’ve had consistent time in my studio. Hope you’ve had a great weekend. Take time to pop over to Helena’s blog for more Zoom In, Zoom Out pairings.

Happy Halloween

  • by

Actually the weather wasn’t very cooperative for Halloween Trick or Treating tonight. We’ve had a steady drizzle all day and evening, and it’s chilly. In Chicago, it was worse. They had hail and rain. After three houses, Caleb announced he was “Done!” Fortunately, they didn’t spend any money getting him ready this year as he was able to wear the dinosaur costume I made for Matt over 20 years ago! Here he is a couple weeks ago trying it out.

IMG_7075ed_eblog

And practicing his roar.

IMG_7065ed_blog

I don’t know how Skylar enjoyed Halloween. We went down while she was getting into her costume. She wanted to be Elsa from Frozen (no surprise!), and she seemed pretty happy about getting out to go trick or treating.

IMG_6740ed_blog

IMG_6747ed_blog

She was off to visit her other grandpa before heading out, and we came home to welcome the few trick or treaters that braved the rain. We had some really cute ones, but not very many.

I made a couple Halloween cards a while back and sent one to Caleb and one to Skylar.

WitchesBrew

The first one uses some stamps and dies from Papertrey’s Friendship Jar:  Fall Fillers as well as some border stickers I’ve had in my stash for a long time. Not sure who made them. The same is true for the stickers (same set) on the next card.

SpookyTreats

Since I have a very limited selection of Halloween stamps, both cards were the same inside with images from the Friendship Jar: Fall Fillers set.

HalloweenInside

I must admit Halloween has never been a favorite holiday, but I do enjoy seeing my grandchildren in their costumes!

Zoom In, Zoom Out on the Pumpkin Patch

  • by

On Wednesday afternoons, I volunteer at an after school program in the inner city. Typically, I help 4th, 5th, and 6th graders with their homework, but this afternoon the whole center (K-6) went on a field trip to a local farm market’s Halloween pumpkin patch.

IMG_5589ed_blog

When you enter the teepees (there are three connected ones) you enter a totally dark area lit only with rows and rows of creatively carved jack-o-lanterns. They sit on shelves from the middle of the teepee to the top. No way to get a photo, but it was pretty impressive.

IMG_5590ed_blog

The farm market also gives hay rides through a Halloween-themed route around the property.

IMG_5587ed_blog

IMG_5588ed_blog

The kids all came home with a small pumpkin and had an apple (most were eaten there.) They seemed to have a great time, and hopefully, they’ll get their homework done at home tonight!

Birdsongs

  • by

When I pulled out the new “Birdsongs” stamps and dies (Papertrey Ink) over the weekend, I die cut a pile of birds, leaves and flowers. Yesterday I put a few together to make two cards, one for a friend’s birthday and the other for a friend who is recovering from surgery.

SongbirdBD

One of the things I loved about this set were the selection of song banners for a variety of occasions.

SongbirdBDClose

There wasn’t, however, any sentiment for a get well card, so I went to one of the Simon Says sets, “Friendship Messages” for the greeting on the front of the card.

SongbirdHugs

Both cards use a Hero Arts kraft ready-made card and a variety of cardstock from Papertrey Ink:  Pure Poppy, TerraCotta Tile, Harvest Gold, Orange Zest, Ripe Avocado, and Simply Chartreuse. I backed the birds for some of the cut-outs and inlaid some of the pieces. That’s a bit time-consuming (the pieces are tiny, but worth the effort. I used a black Sharpie marker to color in the eye of both birds.

Two Cards

  • by

I finally got some time to get a couple cards made, both using new stamps that arrived in the last month. The first is one I need to send out tomorrow. A friend from church invited Tracy and me to the Rochester Philharmonic concert last night. It was wonderful, and six of us enjoyed dinner at a new restaurant in our neighborhood beforehand. I purchased the Mama Elephant “Sentimental Borders” after seeing this card by Laura Basson. Mine’s a close case of that card, but more subdued in keeping with a note for a guy.

ThankYou

I have to admit I don’t find it easy to line up those borders to create a background, but I do like the effect once it’s done. The die cut is Papertrey Ink’s “Wonderful Words: Thank You.” The card is one from Memory Box. I love the color and the fact that the inside is white.

The next card uses the new set from Papertrey Ink called “Songbirds.” I die cut a lot of different images from the set, but only used one on the first card. You’ll be seeing a lot of this set. I just love the folk art birds!

BirdBD

The sentiment is from one of my most frequently used sets, “Stylish Sentiments: Birthday” by Papertrey. Another Memory Box card, Rustic White cardstock edged with a narrow strip of Canyon Clay cardstock. Definitely a CAS card!

Zoom In, Zoom Out on the Vineyards

  • by

On our way home from Chicago, we met our friends for our annual weekend in Niagara-on-the-Lake for a Shaw Festival show (this year a fabulous production of “Caberet,”) and a visit to a few of our favorite wineries. It was a chilly, gray day, but the expected rain didn’t appear so we felt very fortunate.

Zoom In, Zoom Out on the Playground

  • by

We had a great trip, but I’m glad to be home and settling into our usual routines. It was raining most of the time we were in Chicago, but we did manage to get an hour or so in at the wonderful playground in Deerfield one day. When I asked Caleb what he’d like to do with us when we got to Chicago, “go to the playground” was the first request. This time it was the swings that were the big hit.

It’s amazing how long it takes to get through things like mail when you’ve been gone nearly two weeks. I worked on my Sketchbook Skool assignments a little bit while we were away, but I have catching up to do there as well as the Online Card Class on Copic markers. The to-do list is long, and the hours seems to fly by! Hopefully, I’ll get back to regular blogging by the end of the week.

One Photo & Twenty Words

Autumn brings mixed feelings. I’m not a fan of the upcoming long, dreary winter, but I love the autumn splendor.

I’m joining Abi’s meme with a  photo taken at the beautiful Pennisula State Park in Door County, Wisconsin.

Zoom In, Zoom Out: On the Road

  • by

We were on the road for four days, and arrrived at Sarah and Adam’s last night. I have lots of glorious fall photos to share once we get home (a week from today), but I wanted to share these ZIZO pairs from our first night in Muskegon, Michigan. Muskegon sits on the shore of Lake Michigan, and after dinner we thought we try to catch the sunset at the local lighthouse at Grand Haven.

This is exactly how it looked; no photo edits except to crop and resize. What we didn’t expect was to turn around and see this:

Early the next morning there was a lunar eclipse. When we left our hotel, the eclipse was total, and we were able to watch it recede for about half an hour as we drove north before it disappeared from our view.
