Start With a Song

  • by

Pink Fresh Studio has become one of my favorite stamp companies. They hosted two challenges yesterday for World Cardmaking Day. I managed to finish a card for the first challenge: favorite technique.

One of my favorite techniques is to color images, and I’m also a fan of watercolor backgrounds which I don’t do often enough. I combined both with this stamp set from Pink Fresh: “Aviary.” I love the whimsical images in this set.

Song

After watercoloring the background on Tim Holtz watercolor paper, I die cut it with a Spellbinders rectangle die and stamped the sentiment (also from “Aviary.”)

The individual images were also watercolored and die cut with the accompanying dies. Before I adhered the background to the Soft Stone card, I dry embossed a slightly larger Spellbinders rectangle to create a subtle frame.

The final step was to arrange the three images. I used a bit of dimensional tape under the cute bird.

We’re off after church to the Finger Lakes with a friend for lunch and to pick up our fall order of wine from Boundary Breaks. Hoping it doesn’t rain.

World Cardmaking Day

  • by

It’s World Cardmaking Day, and I’ve had a bit of time to create a couple of cards. I’m hoping I’ll have time to finish at least one more that needs to get in the mail later today. But for now here’s a card for the current challenge at The Flower Challenge: Clean and Simple. Right up my alley.

TFChallenge#37

In August, I was lucky enough to attend an Altenew Open House in Syracuse. We had the opportunity to play with the September release, so the image from the now released “Flower Garden” was stamped on a piece of white cardstock then. All it needed was a bit of coloring and a sentiment (also from Altenew).

WonderfulDay

I added the front panel to a card made from Papertrey Ink’s “Lilac Grace,” and called it done. It’s almost a one layer card!

WonderfulDayFlat

I don’t often do partial coloring, but I really like it here, and think I’ll do more of it in the future.

The second card is also for a challenge: Inspired By: A Truckload of Fall.

Inspired92

As soon as I saw the image, I knew I’d play along this week. I had the perfect stamp set and it had been awhile since I pulled it out: “Little Pickup” by Honeybee Stamps.

LittlePickup

After coloring the image with Copics, I die cut the piece with a “Stitched Rectangle,” and then die cut a slightly larger “Stitched Rectangle” from a piece of patterned paper by Sunny Studio. The sentiment is from Papertrey Ink’s “Scene It: Celebrations” set. All was then adhered to a kraft card. Not quite sure which guy will get this card this fall. If it was a bit more CAS I could enter it in another current challenge for masculine cards. I didn’t think of that while I was creating it!

Card Concept Challenge

  • by

There’s a lovely new photo inspiration at The Card Concept.

TC119 091119

In need of multiple thank you notes earlier this month, I pulled out some butterflies I had embossed and die cut earlier, and colored them with Copic markers. I added a thin strip of black cardstock to a premade card from Paper Source and added the butterfly to the center.

ButterflyThanks3

Then I stamped the sentiment from Papertrey Ink’s “Never Enough Thanks” in black in. I love this font and wish I had other sentiments that used it.

ButterflyThanks

This is clearly a quick Clean and Simple design—right up my alley.

A Special Birthday for Three Challenges

  • by

It’s not often that I have a card to share for three different challenges, but tonight I do! While we’re away a good friend is celebrating an very special birthday. We’ll be missing the party, but we’ll be toasting to his big day later in our trip.

The new challenge at Seize the Birthday is “Just a Number.”  At AAA Birthday it’s “Use a Stencil,” and at Simon Says Wednesday Challenge it’s “Stamp It.” This card meets all three:

80

I used two Simon Says stamp sets, “Birthday Numbers” and “Party Like a Panda” and a bit of masking to stamp the number and the balloons onto watercolor paper. It’s harder to see in this photo, but after watercoloring the numbers and balloons, I used a My Favorite Things cloud stencil to add some interest to the background. It’s a bit easier to see in this photo:

80Close

Finally I die cut the panel W+9’s Gift Card Layers die and adhered it to a bright green card made from PTI’s New Leaf cardstock.

80Flat

It’s a pretty whimsical card for a guy, but the recipient is one lighthearted, fun-loving guy, so I think he’ll like it.

A Square Card for Seize the Birthday

  • by

SeizetheBirthday badge

I have an unusual spare moment on our road trip, and an email reminder that there’s still time to enter a card into the current Seize the Birthday challenge for a square card. Right before we left I had to make a number of birthday cards to send while we are away. One went in the mailbox in Cannon Beach today.

WishBig

Once again the main image comes from Altenew’s Weekend Doodles. I stamped it on watercolor paper and painted it with Altenew’s 36 pan watercolors. After fussy cutting a lot of images from this set, I took advantage of a sale and bought the dies. The week before we left, however, Sarah helped me figure out how to die cut stamped and scanned images with my Cameo, so there’ll be a lot less money spent on dies after this!

WishBigClose

I backed the wreath with a strip of ombre striped patterned paper from Papertrey Ink. stamped the sentiment (also PTI) and mounted the wreath with foam tape.

I’m linking this card to the Seize the Birthday Challenge right here.

Seize the Birthday: Butterflies

  • by

The current challenge (with toppings) at Seize the Birthday is Butterflies.

Seize the BD Toppings

Papertrey Ink has several great sets with butterflies. I pulled out “Butterfly Blooms” for this card.

SarahBD1

After coloring the butterfly with Copic markers and die cutting it, I die cut Papertrey’s “Bold Borders: Wave” from True Black cardstock. I adhered it to a white card and stamped the greeting from Gina K’s “Wreath Builder” set in the center.

SarahBD

There have been several Monarch butterflies in our yard recently which inspired the color choices for the butterfly. It’s a good contrast with the white and black background.

Hope you have a great weekend ahead!

For the Girls: Take 2

  • by

I have another card for the AAA Birthday Challenge: For the Girls.

#3

This one is a bright pink, and one of the more simple cards I’ve created recently. I do like the vellum embossed flowers though on the pretty cardstock. I die cut the Raspberry Fizz cardstock with a Stitched Rectangle die and adhered it to a white card. Then I add the white embossed flowers.

VellumWish

Once again, the flowers are from the Simon Says “Delicate Flowers” set. I fussy cut them right up against the white embossing, although I do have the dies for this set now.

VellumWishClose

The sentiment, also white embossed, is from the Papertrey Ink “Just Desserts” set.

VellumWishFlat

Hope your weekend is off to a good start. We’re off to Niagara-on-the-Lake to celebrate our anniversary.

Color Throwdown

  • by

The current Color Throwdown is pink, gray, silver, and white. I’m in need of several anniversary cards, and these seemed like appropriate colors.

Swatch552

I started by diecutting Simon Says “Hearts Trio” in a piece of white cardstock, and then die cutting it again with “Stitched Rectangles.” I cut a piece of Sunny Studios “Silly Stripes” paper to back the hearts and added the piece to a card base made from Papertrey Ink’s Weathervane.

Hearts

For the sentiment, I die cut a Weathervane banner from The Greetery’s “Sentiment Suite: Basics” and embossed the greeting in silver. To add a bit more silver, I die cut two small hearts with Simon Says “Large Holiday Shapes” from beautiful silver paper from Paper Source.

HeartsClose

The sentiment is from an old Papertrey Ink set “Mat Stack #3.” It’s an oldie that I turn to over and over for small font sentiments. Finally I added some Rainstones for a bit of sparkle.

HeartsFlat

I’m off to link up to the challenge which ends in just a few hours!

Shimmer

  • by

The current challenge at CASology is “Shimmer.” It was a chance to pull out Altenew’s “Needlework Motif” in my ongoing determination to use stamps that have seen little love or have never been used.

Week 348 - Shimmer

I also pulled out a piece of shimmery bronze cardstock for the card base. The gorgeous design was stamped in black on white cardstock and watercolored with beautiful shimmery metallic paints that I acquired many years ago during a class at a new defunct stamp store here. The paints were hand-labeled and I have no memory of who the manufacturer might have been. I used just two colors: gold and bronze.

Fabulous

Here’s a closer look, although the shimmer of the cardstock and paints are much more beautiful IRL.

I’ve been away from the craft room for a few days, and it’s good to be back!

Birthday Flowers for You

  • by

The current Time Out Challenge features this quote:

Time Out Challenge 139

My card features a bouquet of bright summery flowers—who could not be happy surrounded by such beautiful blooms? It’s also another candidate for AAA Birthday: For the Girls.

AAA#3

With the exception of the embossed sentiment from Papertrey Ink’s “Balloon Bash,” all the elements for this card were laying on my desk. The flowers  from Altenew’s “Adore” were colored with Copics some time ago, and the Pink Fresh Studio “Essentials: Braided Tag” was from an earlier failed card design.

BDForYou

I’m a huge fan of Pink Fresh Studio’s braided die cut designs. I love the subtle color that comes through from the card itself, and there are multiple layers to each one. In this case, I used all three of the pieces for this tag. I’m also a huge fan of bright colors set against a black background, so this card makes me pretty happy.

BDForYouFlat

This big bouquet of blooms is a bit of a departure from my more CAS card designs, but it seems like a perfect summer birthday card!

Mom’s 90th Birthday: Part 2

  • by

Friday was Mom’s actual 90th birthday, and although we celebrated with a big party for extended family and friends a couple of weeks ago, we didn’t want to let the actual event go unnoticed. The immediate family all gathered at our house for lunch on Friday with great stories, lots of fun, and of course, another cake!

Mom-90th-cake2ed

Everyone had more cards and some gifts to share as well. Here’s the new card I made for Mom:

PinkBD

I started by die cutting two elements from Pink Fresh Studio’s “Essentials: Braided Circle” on a white linen card front. I added that to a Pale Peony card base and stamped the sentiment from Papertrey Ink’s “Birthday Basics.”

PinkBDFlat

Then I added the floral cluster from Pink Fresh Studio’s “Fancy Blooms” that was watercolored on Bristol paper and then fussy cut.

PinkBDClose

In the photo you can just barely see the Wink of Stella glitter added to the centers of the flowers, but it’s much clearer IRL.

I’m linking this card up to the following challenges:

As soon as I saw this challenge pop up in my reader, I knew exactly which new dies to pull out. My first order to The Greetery was to purchase the “Succulent Dies” and the “Small Terrarium” die. Both were a gift from a friend for my birthday. I’ve had extra time in the craft room this week to play with new and unloved stamps and dies, so this was a perfect excuse to get out my ink blending tools and some Distress Inks.

Succulents

We have a nice selection of succulents both inside and outside, but for my first attempt in coloring the succulents, I followed Betsy Veldman’s lead in choosing colors. Each succulent has four parts that are ink blended separately before putting them together. Here’s a closer look:

SucculentClose

I die cut the terrarium from bronze metallic cardstock, and after attaching it to the succulents, “hung” it with some twine to the background which was embossed with Taylored Expressions “Subway Tile” embossing folder. It is the perfect backdrop for the terrarium.

SucculentFlat

The sentiments, tag, and banner are also from The Greetery: “Sentiment Suite: Birthday” and “Sentiment Suite Basics” die. It’s not often that I have a lot of unaccounted-for time, but it’s a great excuse to play with my crafty supplies and get a few cards made ahead for a change.

A Trio of Challenges

  • by

Sometimes creating a card comes easily; other times not so much. Today was a not.so.much. day, but I’m pretty happy with the overall outcome. Friday I spent some time with two stampers and had a chance to play around with some stamps and dies I don’t own. It always turns out to be useful; usually I find some things I wish I had, and other times I discover I really don’t need or want a stamp set I had on my “wish list.” This time is worked both ways. The flowers on this card are from the Ink to Paper “Many Anenomes” set. I loved a lot of what I saw during the release, but decided after playing around with them, it was not a set I needed. I did stamp a few on Bristol cardstock, and last night watercolored some for the current Color Throw Down challenge: Blue, Orange, and Gray. Blue and orange flowers were easy to create, but it was adding the gray that turned out to be the real challenge. I tried all kinds of papers and dies, and finally settled on a piece of beautiful patterned paper by Pink Fresh Studio.

BDColor

The Geometrix Hexagon die I used from Ink to Paper was not on my list. It makes a delicate CAS frame which I like quite a lot, so it may eventually find a home here. The sentiment and banner are from the new Greetery release. I was given a gift certificate for The Greetery for my birthday, and have purchased several sets. Betsy Veldman was one of my favorite designers for Papertrey Ink, and her new company has a lot to offer already. This is the “Sentiment Suite:  Birthday” set, and comes with a great assortment of tag and banner dies that hold the sentiments perfectly.

BDColorFlatjpg

In addition to the Color Throw Down challenge, I’m also entering it in the Seize the Birthday: Cover the Card (that’s the topping,) and Simon Says: Anything Goes.

Thank You

  • by

Last night our interfaith book group had a special guest who shared a wealth of knowledge with us. I wanted to write her a thank you note, and pulled out a new Altenew set I just purchased during a sale at Ellen Huston. After one use, I’m pretty sure you’ll be seeing a lot of “Weekend Doodles.” I love the sketchy look of the flowers and they are beautifully arranged, and perfect for coloring. This afternoon I decided to pull out my Copic markers, and chose the colors based on the monthly Altenew Challenge.

Altenew

I didn’t have quite the same purple as the stripe behind the photograph, but if you look at the pansies, you will see a more traditional purple which I used in the flowers.

ThankYou

The design of the card was also dictated by a challenge: the AAA Card Challenge: One Corner and Optional Twist: Flowers. I’ve got both of those.

#143

After coloring the flowers, I die cut them and added some dimensional tape before adding them to the white cardstock where I had already stamped the sentiment from Papertrey Ink’s “Thank You Kindly.”

ThankYouFlat

I tried a variety of tiny embellishments, but in the end, decided to leave it truly CAS, and just added it to a top-folded card of Ripe Avocado.

ThankYouClose

I’m off to check out the other entries at these challenges.

The Library Challenge: The Rainbow

  • by

The Library Challenge is an interesting one. The challenge is based on a book cover, and you can use the cover art, the title, or the story as your inspiration. In this case, I’m using the title.

RainbowCover

Not long ago I purchased two dies from Reverse Confetti: the “On the Curve” cover plate, and “Over the Rainbow.” The design team for Reverse Confetti highlighted multiple ways to creatively use the cover plate, and I’m always looking for interesting dies that might appeal to grandchildren. A rainbow seemed like a good choice. As it turns out, my first card with these dies went to an adult cousin who loved it!

Rainbow

Admittedly, it took a bit of time to cut the cover plate from so many different colors of cardstock, but I now have a stash of bright colors all cut for the next card. Once I had the colored pieces, I die cut the cover plate from Select White cardstock and inlaid all the pieces. This was made much easier by applying a sheet of Stick It behind the die so that each strip immediately adheres to the background.

RainbowFlat

The next step was to die cut the cute clouds and sun from the “Over the Rainbow” set, which does include the die for a much smaller rainbow. I did some ink blending around the sun rays and popped up the center of the sun and the clouds on the cardbase.  The sentiment is from Simon Says “Best Ever” set which I curved on an acrylic block to add to one of the rainbow stripes. I’m pretty sure I’ll be using these dies for birthday cards as well as thinking of you cards. Who could resist smiling at such a bright and cheery card?
