A Simply Stamped Card

  • by

It’s Stamptember at Simon Says Stamps, where they celebrate stamping all month long, starting with a huge release of new stamps, dies, and stencils. As part of that celebration, the Wednesday Challenge is “Stamping.” There’s nothing but stamping on this card—rather unusual, actually—which makes it a great one layer card for mailing.

Here’s my simply stamped card.

FloralCelebrate

The floral focal point was done with the stamp set included in the Simon Says June Card Kit. I love all the little pieces that come together to create a pretty bouquet of sorts. The sentiment is from Papertrey Ink’s “Live, Love, Life” set. I used some of my favorite colors—orange, yellow, and green—thinking they are nice fall colors as well. Not really ready to admit Fall is in the air, but it is.

Have a great weekend!

A Bookish Birthday

  • by

One of my very good friends is an avid (and very fast) reader. She easily averages more books a week than I do in a month, so the September Simon Says Card Kit was a perfect match for her birthday card. It’s all about books and reading.

Here’s my first take with this stamp set.

BDShelf

The patterned papers are all from October Afternoon’s “Public Library” line. I stamped a shelf for the books and plant, and found a perfect sentiment in Papertrey Ink’s “All Booked Up” set.  I love the inside sentiment from “All Booked Up” as well.

Virginia’s View has a new challenge up for this month using patterned paper. It’s a perfect challenge for getting to some of those beautiful patterned papers in kits and my 6X6 paper pad collection.

CAS(e) This Sketch #89

  • by

I’m in just under the wire for this sketch challenge. It’s one of my favorites, but it’s been awhile since I played along. Yesterday after finishing a birthday card for Skylar (she’ll be three next month!), I started to organize my Simon Says Card Kits. I challenged myself to make a card for each kit as I went through it, and ended up with several cards. This one fits the new sketch at CAS(e) This Sketch.

CTS_89

We’re going to be traveling the first part of October, so instead of just looking ahead one month to see what cards I’ll need, I’m looking ahead two months. I need a total of 13 cards, but just one of them is an anniversary. So now I’m set for that.

Anniversary

The two patterned papers and the cardstock came from the June Simon Says Card Kit.  The gold paper I backed the hearts with is from the last sheet of a paper I purchased at the first independent stamp store in Rochester. It’s been closed at least 15 years now. I’d love to know where to find more. The banner die and “Banner Sentiments” stamp are from Papertrey Ink. Those Banner Sentiments are sure to get a lot of use. The sequins are from a multi-colored pack from Michael’s. I keep pulling out the gold and silver ones, and pretty soon I may need to buy a pack of just gold and silver.

AnniversaryClose

I never made it to the gym yesterday, so as soon as this is linked up, I’m off before I can find excuses today!

August 2014 Papertrey Ink Blog Hop

  • by

We had such a busy weekend, it wasn’t until this morning that I had time to create a couple of cards for this month’s Papertrey Ink Blog Hop. We were away last month, and since this is one of my favorite blog hops I didn’t want to miss it two months in a row. Here’s the inspiration piece:

AugustBlogHop

I’m a big fan of polka dots and have seen some really nice cards and planners for 2015 using gold polka dots so that’s where I started.

HBPTI

I randomly stamped two sizes of polka dots from “Polka Dot Basics,” and layered it on a sheet of metallic gold paper, and then onto a True Black card base. The die cut is from the Wonderful Words set, and I selectively stamped and embossed a part of the Happy Birthday sentiment from Alt&New’s “Label Love.”

For the second card, I used just one of the polka dot stamps, and a die cut from the new-to-me “Wet Paint Cuts.”

ThanksPTI

This time I matted the polka dots onto True Black cardstock and then onto a Hawaiian Shores card. I’m guessing I’ll find quite a bit of inspiration from the other entries this month, so I’m off to check them out.

Two More for Class

  • by

Today is the last day you can upload cards to the galleries for the Online Card Class:  Stretch Your Stamps 2. I have a LOT more things I want to try, but this morning I took time to try two more. The first is a card based on a tag created by Laura Basson using a technique, “over the edge.” The stamp itself is quite a bit bigger than what is stamped on the tag, but it works perfectly. I love just about everything Laura Basson creates and her tags (using watercolor for one, and Copics for the other) are no exception. I decided to go with the Copics this morning as it’s been awhile since I colored an image.

FloralThanks

I didn’t have the same Copics Laura used so I ended up blending a bright orange with a bright pink—never tried two such different colors but it worked very well. The Sakura Gelly Roll white pen really made the flower centers pop.

FloralThanksClose

I used a new Papertrey Stitched Rectangle die cut with New Leaf cardstock (PTI), and mounted it on a top-folded white card. The twine is from a large roll I bought at a gift shop earlier this spring. Both the floral stamp and the sentiment are from Clearly Besotted “Fresh Flowers.” It’s a gorgeous set. I’m linking this up to the Fusion Challenge: Floral Brights, and the Simon Says Monday Challenge: Anything Goes.

The second card uses a new (to me) Avery Elle set called “Rounded Diamonds.” It took longer to find three ink pads I could layer than it did to create the rest of the card. This one follows very closely the design of Nicol Magouirk’s card in class. She die cut a window into hers, but I don’t have the dies for this set so I stamped on a white card, and mounted it on a card made from Simon Says’ Smoke cardstock. It’s another gray/yellow combo.

GraphicFriend

The sentiment from Paper Smooches “Sentiment Sampler” fit right onto one of the rounded diamonds. Some Studio Calico and Pretty Pink Posh sequins were layered to finish off the card.

Using a Graphic Stamp

  • by

Days 7 and 8 of the Online Card Class focused on using graphic stamps. I have just a few sets, and was most interested in these lessons since I’m never quite sure what to do with them. Debby Hughes is a wonderful designer and I started with her random stamping video.

I got out another unused stamp set by Alt&New called “Sohcahtoa.” It’s a mix of triangles and some great sentiments. Perfect for this technique and for two challenges:  Moxie Fab’s Trendy Triangles, and Addicted to CAS:  Geometric.

ATCAS - code word geometricl

Grey and yellow have been a trendy combination for awhile. I purchased a gray and yellow scarf in April that I just love, so thought it would be a good combination for the card.

GraphicBD

I used two shades of Simon Says cardstock:  Fog and Slate. I stamped on a piece of Neenah Solar White. The sentiment is also from Alt&New called “Label Love.” I finished it off with a few enamel dots from My Minds Eye. I need to replenish my enamel dot collection soon. I keep using the same colors over and over.

Hoping to be back later with another card to post in the galleries for the Online Card Class before they close tomorrow, but the list of other projects is pretty long.

A Trio of Rainbow Cards

  • by

Kristina Werner produced the first video for the Online Card Class: Stretch Your Stamps 2 , and demonstrated how to create a watercolored background using the Hero Arts Highline Ironwork stamp.

Highline

I photographed my piece when I was done, but didn’t check the photo carefully, and it was too out of focus to share. Unusual, but it happens when you’re in a hurry. You may be able to get the idea from the cards that follow. After watercoloring the piece, I cut it apart in strips and with several die cuts, and managed to create three cards. I still have a couple of hearts left over.

RainbowBD

I used the Wonderful Words: Birthday stamp and die from Papertrey Ink for this as well as a four hearts die from Simon Says.

RainbowThankYou

This one uses a couple of the strips I cut, and Wonderful Words: Thank You from Papertrey.

RainbowThankYouClose

I love the bright rainbow colors against both black and white, but they work with bright cardstock as well. Here’s the last card with Sunshine cardstock from Simon Says.

RainbowSunshine

It’s another Wonderful Words stamp and die (“Hello”), along with a few wood veneer hearts from Studio Calico that I colored with a Copic marker and highlighted with a bit of Wink of Stella glitter. I stacked the die cut again with several words cut from the Sunshine cardstock.

RainbowHelloClose

Watercoloring the white embossed piece took a bit of time and patience, but it was well worth the effort to get three cards into the file!

I’ll be linking these up to the Simon Says Monday Challenge which is “Anything Goes.”

Cards and Two Challenges

  • by

This is my second post today after only two posts in the previous week. It’s been some time since I sat down to create some cards. The first order of business this morning was to get cards for the rest of August ready to send. One anniversary card and one birthday card were already in the card file, but I needed an anniversary card for my sister-in-law and brother-in-law. I’ve seen a lot of stacked die cuts around the blogosphere recently, and decided to give it a try. It was super easy, and I love the effect.

Love

The background image is from a new Papertrey set called Ombre Builder. It’s not the kind of set I often purchase, but I’m pretty sure it will get a lot of use. I love these little triangles, and am entering this in the Moxie Fab “Trendy Triangles” challenge and the Addicted to CAS challenge:  Geometric. The Love die and sentiment are both Papertrey Ink, “Wonderful Words: Love.”

ATCAS - code word geometricl

LoveClose

The second card was for a much sadder occasion. Another untimely and unexpected death of a man who we knew through Tracy’s best friend. Jack and Louise are next-door neighbors of Pete and Arlene’s and we’ve always enjoyed spending time with them at parties, weddings, and other events.

SympathyFull

The idea for this card came from the Online Card Class: Stretch Your Stamps 2 for stamping on dark cardstock. My card is a very simple one compared to the card demonstrated in class. I’ve read a lot about Hero Arts Unicorn White pigment ink, so ordered it the last time I placed an online order. I’m pretty impressed. The stamp is “Harvest Berries” by Papertrey, and the sentiment is from a Hero Arts set (don’t have the name.) I used tiny pearls for the berries.

SympathyClose

I made this last card awhile ago, but never posted it. I found it when I was looking through my card files this morning. It’s a perfect card for Virginia’s View’s lastest challenge: Shaped Cards. It will be perfect for one of the grandchildren come October.

Jack-o-Lantern

All the papers are American Craft textured cardstock, and the features are an old Sizzix die. The googly eyes came from Michael’s.

Off to the gym. Hopefully after dinner, I can get back to the crafting table.

Online Card Class: Stretch Your Stamps 2

  • by

It’s not the first time, nor will it be the last, but I’ve overextended myself with online instruction once again. This week I had lessons in two drawing classes, the phone photography class at BPC, and the new Online Card Class. Since neither of the drawing classes have lifetime access, it’s been critical to keep up with them. I’m definitely a newbie to the sketching/drawing world, so it’s also been very time-consuming. Add Sarah, Adam, and Caleb’s visit plus daily trips to Conesus Lake this week, and it’s really quite amazing that I have a card to share!

Two of Sarah and Adam’s friends have just adopted a beautiful baby boy. We were lucky enough to meet William the day we were in Chicago earlier this month. I wanted to send a gift and card back when Sarah and Adam left today, so it was a good opportunity to try one of the techniques from Days 3 & 4–using alphabet and sentiment stamps.

William

This is a take on Tami Hartley’s class on Day 4 where she created a banner for her sentiment by using alpha stamps. At first I thought I must have purged all my small alphas, but finally found an old Technique Tuesday one that fit on the banner from My Favorite Things Blueprints 5 die set (another item that’s seeing it’s first use.) The striped paper is a left-over from the other baby card I made recently, and the banners were cut from a piece of paper I watercolored. Three little hearts (using an old paper punch) with little pearls from AMuse finished it off. The “welcome” was selectively stamped from a sentiment in the “Baby Button Bits” set by Papertrey Ink.

I’m linking this up with the Simon Says Work It Wednesday challenge which is BLUE this month.

Sarah, Adam, and Caleb headed back to Chicago this morning. We’ve been blessed by such a nice long visit, and I’m going to miss that two-year-0ld voice (as well as his parents) every morning for quite some time. FaceTime is fabulous, but it sure doesn’t replace the real deal!

The Birthday Girl

  • by

Yesterday was Sarah’s birthday, and luckily for us, it was the second year in a row she’s been here to celebrate. I didn’t post yesterday because the celebration didn’t end until tonight when Adam arrived. Actually the birthday began mid-week when her first gift arrived from Amazon. Sarah’s become the DIY queen in the last several months. She’s been finding free or very inexpensive furniture and other goodies on Craig’s list and refinishing or repurposing them. So this year, she asked for a power tool. After much consultation with her very handy father, she decided on a scroll saw.

IMG_6617ed_blog

Somehow I haven’t gotten a photo of the really cute toys she’s made for Caleb–a whale, a school of fish, a darling hedgehog and more. Today she finished painting and adding the oil/beeswax finish to all of them.

Somewhere in her search about the Rochester area, she came across a reference to the Avon Flea Market. We’ve never been, but yesterday morning we headed out. It turned out to be a lot of fun and we all came home with something.

IMG_6645ed_blog

Turns out Matchbook cars are a big collectors’ item, and there were hundreds of them for Caleb to look at.

IMG_6646ed_blog

But interestingly, he didn’t come home with any of them. Instead he came home with a bin of great alphabet blocks that were 50% off the already reasonable asking price.

IMG_6665ed_blog

I bought an old dictionary for $3 to use in art journaling and an antique (or just old) folding six-foot measuring stick.

IMG_6668ed_blog

Tracy and a friend have gotten into model railroads since they’ve retired, and Tracy found a really cute N-gauge train that works great. (I think Caleb thought this was the best find of all.)

IMG_6677ed_blog

But Sarah negotiated the best deal for a mitre saw.

IMG_6669ed_blog

Last night we joined Tracy’s mom and siblings at Conesus Lake where they’ve rented a cottage for the week, and after dinner celebrated with a cake.

IMG_6687ed_blog

Tonight Matt, Betsy, and Skylar came to dinner, and we had an ice cream pie from Sarah’s favorite soft ice cream shop. Their chocolate almond ice cream is to die for, and the pie might even be better!

BDCake8.4_blog

Given Sarah’s new hobby, I decided to break out a stamp set I’ve had for a couple of years. I’ve hardly used it, and when I bought it I certainly didn’t have Sarah in mind. It’s a definite case of a card Maille Belle did for the release of the set at Papertrey Ink.

SarahBD

All in all, I think Sarah had a good birthday. She was definitely glad to see Adam tonight who just returned from a mission trip in Havana, Cuba. Their departure was delayed by 12 hours, so he was a day late arriving in Chicago, and didn’t get here until just after we finished dinner, but before Matt and Betsy had to take Skylar home for bed. They’ll be here for the rest of the week, and we’ll be heading to the lake after naps each day.

Baby Shower

  • by

I’m off in a few minutes to a baby shower. It will be their first, a little boy due next month. A happy occasion, and the grandmother-to-be who is my good friend is excited beyond words!

Once again the Papertrey Ink Phrase Play #5 die came to the rescue.

Baby

I used piece of American Craft 12X12 scrapbook paper that’s been in my stash for a long time to cut the die, and Spring Rain cardstock by PTI for the card base. The layered felt sticker has been in my stash for a long time, too.

BabyClosejpg

I only have a couple baby-themed stamp sets, and couldn’t find any sentiment that worked so I created on on the computer and ran the card base through the printer before starting the card front.

I’m linking this to the new Simon Says Work It Wednesday challenge which is BLUE.

Hope you’re having a great weekend. Ours is pretty quiet aside from the fact that we have a busy, happy 2 1/2 year old living with us!

Sad Time

  • by

It’s been a tough week. Betsy’s mom passed away last Tuesday after a brief bout with cancer. She was just 65. In April she went for a routine physical, having no symptoms, and within a few days had a diagnosis of stage 4 cancer. Sally was one of the most positive people ever, and always thinking about everyone else, right to the last minute. She will be missed so much.

I’ve made cards for Betsy, both of her sisters, and her dad. Paul’s card is a duplicate of one I’ve made before so I’m not posting it again. I tried a new watercolor techniques for two of the cards. I’ve always thought sympathy cards needed to be simple, and watercolor seems to fit the bill.

Sympathy1

Sympathy2

Both of these cards were stamped with a light Distress Ink which fades into the background as you watercolor the separate petals. The key is never to watercolor two petals touching one another so you keep the definition of the flower. Although it takes some time and the outline of the stamps is still more visible than I think it should be, I’m happy with the first attempts.

The last card uses my favorite watercolor technique: a white embossed image that is then watercolored. I’ve learned to do it in a window so I can see the outline of the white embossing.

Sympathy3

Sympathy3Close

We made a quick trip to Chicago this week to bring Sarah, Caleb, and Sadie (their dog) back to Rochester. Adam is in Cuba on a mission trip. When he returns this weekend, he’ll drive to Rochester, spend a few days with us before they return to Chicago. We’re always glad to have lots of time with family, so this makes a sad time easier.

Sending Sunshine

  • by

Last night when I should have been packing for our camping trip, I came across the new ColourQ challenge, and thought it would be perfect with the current CAS(E) This Sketch challenge. And I had the perfect (new) stamp set to put to use:  “Doodlie Do” by Papertrey Ink. Here are the challenges:

2Challenges_edited-1

And here’s my interpretation:

SendingSunshine

I love these bright colors! I embossed and masked the flower, then the leaves and colored them with Copics. The sentiment is from the same set. And it’s another one for my encouragement card stash.

SunshineClose

I’ll pop this into the Curtain Call Anniversary challenge, “Anything Goes,” as well.

Anything goes

In about an hour we’re off to Selkirk Shores on eastern Lake Ontario for two nights of camping with our friends, Bob and Cathy. It’s supposed to be pretty decent (80’s during the day), but chilly at night (50’s), with a chance of showers on Sunday.  I had lunch with a friend on Tuesday who recommended driving up to Clayton, NY on the St. Lawrence River. There’s an antique boat museum and a classy new hotel that just opened up as well as some “cute shops.” Not sure the guys will be interested in the latter, but I think Clayton’s the plan for Sunday afternoon.

Card Set

  • by

Alexa once again shared her photo and digital gifts with a download this week. As soon as I saw these delightful typewriters, I knew I’d make some simple, one layer cards. Sadly, I’m in almost constant need of encouragement cards, so it’s nice to have a little stash.

IMG_5467_blog

After printing the typewriters on Lumijet Fine Art Ink Jet paper, I stamped each with two sentiments I cut apart from Hero Arts “Everyday Sayings.” Then I found color coordinated cardstock in my scrap files to match each of the typewriters, and adhered it all to top folding cards made from Papertrey’s Rustic White cardstock which almost perfectly matches the Fine Art Ink Jet paper.

I just love these, and there are four other colors yet to print and use for another set of cards. Thanks, Alexa, for sharing your gifts!

Celebrate!

  • by

A quick post to share a card that uses, yet again, a new die for the first time and links to two challenges. I ordered the Block Talk die from Papertrey Ink last month, but haven’t had a chance to pull it out until today. “Celebrate” is just one of three words included with the die.

Celebrate

I cut the die twice–once in gold metallic and once in silver metallic and inserted the silver strips into the gold die. The stars came from two “matching” dies from Simon Says:  “Holiday Shapes” and “Large Holiday Shapes.” Those dies get lots of use! The beautiful, slightly textured purple paper is (I think) from Bazzill that I picked up during Archivers going-out-of-business sale in January. The silver metallic paper is from Paper Source, but I’m not sure where I purchased the gold paper.

This is another entry to Virginia’s View Die Cut Challenge.

V. V. Challenge #5 (2)

And it will be my first entry to the Moxie Fab “Wonderful Words Challenge,” which was to include a die cut word in your project.
