Get Well Wishes

  • by

Three of my good friends have recently had surgery. All of them are recovering nicely, and I thought I’d share the cards I sent them.

Re-Covererd

“On the Couch Additions” and “Chair-ished” are two of my favorite stamp sets for folks recovering from surgery. The card is from Paper Source and the patterned paper from “Snap” by Simple Stories.

Sunshine

This friend was definitely in need of some sunshine. As she noted, in August the foot surgery and a three-to-four week recovery didn’t sound too bad, but now not being able to move around, drive, or take care of projects it’s not looking quite so good. I was glad to pull our the “Hello, Sunshine” stamps, as this was the perfect sentiment. A felt sun (Heart2Heart die #6), a Papertrey button, and an old card from the stash (Savvy or A Muse?), and I ended up with a pretty cheerful card.

HangInThere

The card was cased from this card by Kimberly Crawford. It was the perfect sentiment for our cousin’s daughter who had rather dreadful complications from her surgery, but is now doing great. The paper is Cosmo Cricket “Boyfriend,” the little clothespins and twine are from Michael’s, and I generated the sentiment on the computer. I  bought her a couple of journals since she’s a writer and decided to make my own wrapping paper.

I used Hero Art’s Scattered Leaves and a variety of Tim Holtz Distress Inks, utilizing the the rock ‘n roll technique with some of the leaves. It was quick and easy. Something I should do more often.

Still Here

  • by

Yes, I’m still here, and I’m trying to get around to blogs for a few minutes each day, but I haven’t wanted to take the time to post recently since our time with Sarah and Caleb was nearing the end. Sarah, however, came down with a nasty cold on Tuesday. Yesterday she felt so rotten she cancelled two meetings–one with a pastor advisor/friend and one with her grandmother. Her grandmother suggested she stay a few extras days and offered to pay for the change fee. It turned out to be quite a hassle, but Sarah finally found a new flight home for the same price as her original one. Lucky us, she’ll be with us for another week! It proved to be a good decision as the same night, we found Caleb’s first two tiny teeth emerging which has caused a bit of disruption in his sleep patterns. It hasn’t, however, altered his happy disposition. Here’s one of my favorites from yesterday, playing with a basket of Bill Dings–toys we saved from Sarah and Matthew’s childhood, and one I remember from mine as well.

CalebBillDingsw

Needless to say, crafting time has been put aside for the most part, although I do have some earlier projects to share and will try to get them up this week. I’ve also decided on a format for a gratitude project for November (thanks Amy and Mel!) and will try to get some photos it soon.

Here is a card I made the day Sarah and Caleb arrived for good friends who just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.

I think it’s a bit easier to see the metallic paper (silver and blue) in the close-up. I think both are by Bazzill, but I’m not sure. I try to buy a few sheets of it whenever I visit Buffalo Stamps and Stuff, but it has no manufacturer on the paper itself. The dies are By the Number and the sentiment from Big Birthday Wishes (Papertrey Ink), and the gems from Hero Arts.

A Birthday Challenge

  • by

Last week I missed linking my card to CAS(E) This Sketch by just two hours, so I wanted to be sure to get this card done in time to post it for that challenge as well as the CAS-ual Friday Challenge to use kraft paper. Oops! Missed the CAS(E) This Sketch challenge again, by a whole day. Goes to show when you have a baby around, you can’t even keep track of the days. Oh well, I enjoyed the challenge anyway. These are two of my favorite challenge blogs, and they’ve worked very well together. Here’s the sketch:

And here’s my card. This one is for my niece, Stephanie.

HappyBD

The kraft cardstock, sentiment (Birthday Basics), and die (Bloom Builders #3) are all Papertrey Ink. The patterned paper came from a MME’s 6X6 pad, “Stella Rose.” The button in the middle of the flower is from La-Di-Dah, and the pearl from Queen and Company. Both the patterned paper and the button have been in my stash for quite a while.

I’ll be back later with some Halloween fun.

Happy Birthday

It’s a rare day that I put up two posts (my Papertrey Ink Blog hop post is below), but one of the challenges for this card ends tonight. I missed one of the challenges on Tuesday by two hours because I wasn’t paying good attention. When I saw the new CASE Study challenge this morning I had an idea that I thought would work for the Embellish Paint Color Trends challenge. Here’s the card to case:

Felt-foliage-hello

And here’s the Embellish challenge:

Paint

I have to admit I don’t think I’ve ever used paint on a card, but when I saw Julia’s card on CASE Study, I thought I could apply some paint to a piece of black corrugated cardstock and go from there. I had a new bottle of Dick Blick Brown acrylic paint so I randomly applied it to the black cardstock and then distressed it a bit more with a file. I adhered that to a card of Soft Stone which I distressed around the edges. I cut a thin piece of burlap and die cut the leaves from New Leaf Patterned paper (which just arrived this week.) I also painted the sentiment banner. I had a white one laying on the desk, and decided I could just paint it. I was a bit surprised at how easily the Vintage Cream ink stamped on the painted surface. I added a New Leaf button and was done.

Here’s a closer look at the painted corrugated cardstock:

I think paint may show up again on a card or two! I’m posting this on the Moxie Fab canvas, cork, and burlap challenge, too.

Papertrey October Blog Hop Challenge

  • by

PTIBlogHopLogo

This month’s blog hop challenge was to use nontraditional colors to create a holiday card. I started off with a totally different color combination and made six cards with slight variations. Then I realized I’d substituted Select White for the Soft Stone since I got a sharper image on the white. You won’t see those here because some of you are sure to receive one of them in the mail. When I started over, I chose a totally different color scheme, one I definitely wouldn’t have chosen for a Christmas card, but I rather like the results. Here’s the color palette:

NOEL

Although the color’s not listed, there’s clearly some cream in the inspiration post, and I added a Vintage Cream tag. Everything on the card is Papertrey:  Sweet Blush, Scarlet Jewel, Dark Chocolate, and Avocado Green cardstocks, and  Sweet Blush ribbon. I used the Herringbone Impression plate, the chevron dies, Block Alpha, and Tag Sale #3. For some reason the Scarlet Jewel isn’t showing up particularly well in either photo.

It was fun to break out of the Christmas red and green box for awhile.

Birthday Wishes–A Two Challenge Card

  • by

I’m trying to get all the birthday and anniversary cards that I need for the rest of October and November done before Sarah and Caleb arrive later this week. I wanted to participate in the CAS(E) this Sketch challenge again as well as the CAS-ual Friday challenge. CAS-ual Friday is about to release their first sets of stamps later this month. They’ve had lots of great sneak peeks this week. You can check it out here.

Here’s the sketch:

Cts2

And the CAS-ual Friday challenge is to have an element hang off the edge of your card. Once again these challenges worked well together, and CAS is definitely my preferred style.

Cfc75

Here’s what I came up with. I’m trying to use some stamps I haven’t used in a while, so pulled the Modern Wood Mats set off the shelf and stamped it onto a Mat Stack 1 die. Then I die cut Bloom Builders #3 in two different colors and used the smaller dies to create this flower. The center is an old Making Memories brad, and the leaves are Tender Leaves by Memory Box. The sentiment (stamped on a Double Ended Banner die) is from Round and Round. Everything except the leaves and brad are by Papertrey Ink.

BirthdayWishes

I’m thinking this will be heading to one of my nieces for their November birthday. Thanks for your nice comments on the new profile photo. My son-in-law took this when we were in Hilton Head. He was looking for some new head shots and I surely needed one, so it was a great trade. Just took me two months to get it changed!

Anniversary Take Three

  • by

It’s not often that I can combine a group of challenges with cards I need to make. I had a few Flair for Buttons badges laying on my desk thinking I’d use them to make some anniversary cards that need to go into the mail in the next few weeks. Then late last week, up popped several challenges that all worked together. I started with a new sketch challenge: CAS(E) this sketch!

Cts1

I punched hearts and a circle which qualified the cards for the Simon Says Challenge: Use Dies or Punches

And finally the CAS-UAL Fridays challenge:  Put Your Heart Into It.

Cfc74

Here are the three cards. I started with the Flair button and chose the patterned paper and cardstock based on the colors in the button.

HappyAnniversary1

HappyAnniversary2

HappyAnniversary3

All three cards also qualify for a challenge on Moxie Fab for “love” cards.

(Cardstock:  Neenah & Color Mates; patterned paper:  MME: Stella Rose & Happy Go Lucky, October Afternoon: Cherry Hill; buttons:  A Flair for Buttons; and sentiment stamp: Savvy; Punches: McGill)

Make A Wish: Two Challenges

  • by

I’m getting this card into the Embellish Challenge just under the wire, but it’s been on my to-do list since I first saw it.

Stars

Once I saw this week’s Retro Sketch I thought they’d go together nicely.

Rs32

Here’s my take on the challenges. I think this card would work for a guy, a gal, or a teen.

MakeAWish

Cardstock:  Select White & Enchanted Evening (PTI); patterned paper: Bitty Stars (PTI); foil paper & glitter twine: Paper Source; gem:  Mark Richards; star punch: McGill; stamp: Think Big Favorites #1 (PTI)

It’s a beautiful fall day here, but very chilly. Tracy left to golf. I think his fingers may be frozen by the third hole! I’m happy to have nothing on my schedule but the gym.

ColourQ Challenge 156: Fall Birthdays

  • by

Cqc156

I have six birthday cards to make for October and nearly as many in November. As soon as I saw the most recent ColourQ challenge I knew I wanted to get started with making the cards. These are such beautiful fall colors. It’s been really difficult to find time to craft recently, and the last several cards I’ve made have taken much, much longer than usual. This first one was no exception. And despite color correction in PSE, I can’t quite get the colors of my card to show accurately. The raspberry is a bit darker than the challenge color, but the lighter orange leaf is much more true to the challenge than it appears.

FallBD_1

I started by cutting the leaves with my Silhouette (all American Craft cardstock). Then I embossed a Rustic White card (PTI) with the Woodgrain Impression plate (PTI) and adhered them all on an orange textured card (American Craft). The border was also cut with the Silhouette and the sentiment and twine are both Papertrey Ink.

I had some leaves left on my desk and decided to make a second card. This one doesn’t meet the challenge requirements because I added the black frame cut from one of the Fabulous Frame dies by Papertrey Ink.

FallBD2

The leaves seemed a bit flat in this one so after I had arranged everything, I added some Tim Holtz Distress Stains. I’m not sure I like them, but it’s a done deal. The banner was cut with the Double Ended Banner die from Papertrey Ink, and the sentiment came from “Birthday Basics.” I used the Herringbone Impression plate on the Rustic White card and added a few AMuse Creative Candy pearls.

Thanks

  • by

I needed a couple thank you notes. The first one was inspired by two posts. The first by Sian about Flair buttons. I use Flair buttons regularly on layouts, but never think of using them on cards. Not any more. The other post was Melissa’s about Washi tape. I own a small assortment, and don’t often remember to use it either.

WashiThanks

I’m pretty sure the Flair button is by Ormolu, but I’m not sure where the Washi came from. Most of my stash came in Studio Calico kits, but I also bought a few rolls in May from a great little store in Portland, OR called Collage. The card is one from Impress that I’ve had for years.

The next card uses a stamp I bought this summer at an Archiver’s Store in Georgia. It’s an exculsive stamp made for Archiver’s by Hero Arts. I know I’ll be able to use it again and again for quick and easy thank you notes.

ThankYou

The fabric tape is 7Gypsies, and again, it’s been in my stash forever. The card is one of my favorites from Memory Box. The colors are beautiful, and the insides are white. Perfect for writing a note to a friend.

Happy Cards

  • by

It seems like I’ve had far too many occasions to make sympathy and get well cards this year. Today I have two cards to share that celebrate happy events. The first is for a friend who retired this year from a career as a school counselor. When we saw her over Labor Day, she was just beaming at the thought of a carefree fall.

RetirementCard

When we returned from our trip there was a Papertrey order waiting for me. One of the items was the stamp and die set called “Fabulous Frames” which I quickly put to use on this card. There was a thread recently about how often you combine different stamp sets. Frequently, in my case. I also used “Button Boutique,” “It’s Official,” and “Daydreamer” on this card. The card itself is a Memory Box card—my favorite as they have a white interior.

While we were in Denver, Matt took the practical exam for a national landscape certification. The written part of the test was taken in early August. This is quite the exam, and costs $450! The practical exam started at 7:00 am and lasted about five hours. Each section is administered by a different instructor and covers all aspects of landscape work and design. It’s a challenging exam, but this week he found out he had passed. I thought it warranted a card.

Hooray

Another Memory Box card that I cut down to be square. The sun rays are from “Super Star” (WPlus9), the sentiment and die cut from “Wonderful Words” (PTI). I added three little star gems from A Muse and die cut the corners of the sentiment panel with a very old corner punch.

Just Playing

  • by

Our drive from Atlanta to Denver included stops in Birmingham, AL, and Little Rock and Bentonville, AK. I’ll be back in a week or so with some vacation posts and some photos of what we did and saw along the way. For the last four days we’ve been in Colorado. Saturday afternoon to Monday night, Matt, Tracy, and I enjoyed Boulder, CO and the Rocky Mountain National Park. The park is simply spectacular, and we had perfect weather for hiking and driving the Trail Ridge Road. Today we’re relaxing at our friends’ house in Denver. Tonight we’ll have our last meal here with Dan, Nikki, Matt, and Stevie and head out for New York tomorrow morning. Dan and Stevie’s parents were also here for most of our stay so we’ve really had a great time.

We’re anticipating a four-day drive home with stops in Amana, Iowa and Lancaster and Amanda, Ohio (where I grew up.) But we can decide along the way if there are other things we’d like to see or do, or if we’d just asoon drive a little further and get home earlier. So nice to have the time to decide. Here are two cards I made before I left. I have to say, I’m itching to get back to the craft table, and have a few new projects I want to tackle this fall.

Often I have a recipient in mind for a card, or I’m making a card for one of the challenge blogs. But before I left on our trip, I spent some time just playing with some products. I love this die from Memory Box, but have never used it. Once I finished the card, I remembered the sentiment from Papertrey’s “Love Lives Here” set, and thought it would make a good anniversary card.

AnniversaryHouse

And here’s yet another Lovely Layers card. I used the Gridlines paper from Papertrey to help organize the stamps to create the background. Until recently, it’s not a technique I’ve used often. I think next time, I’d use the smaller image to create the background, but I’m happy with this as I have been with just about every card I’ve made with this set. I don’t have anyone in mind for this one yet, but it’s always good to have a few birthday cards stashed away.

LovelyLayersBD

Although I’ve kept up with some of your blog posts, I haven’t taken the time to comment as my internet time has been very limited. I’ll be back soon to catch up, and I’m looking forward to getting reconnected.

Liberate Your Art

Liberate-your-Art-2012-Button-125x125

Last year I read with interest about Kat Sloma’s Liberate Your Art project, but didn’t do anything about participating. This year I signed up early, but let the printing of the postcards sit on the back burner for too long. I finally ordered 4 different prints from Zazzle, and I have to say their customer service has been wonderful. Nonetheless, the order came in two parts, and I was nervous enough that I got the first set in the mail to Kat before the rest arrived. The very next day, of course, the remaining postcards arrived here. In the end, I’m happy with the photo that I sent along with a greeting from my garden.

Postcardsw

Kat has over 150 participants in this year’s swap. I can’t imagine trying to organize all those packages, but I’ll be excited to get my postcards from other participants when I get home from our road trip. I made a card for Kat, and wrote a note thanking her for doing this. Now I have three sets of postcards I can use for thank-you notes or encouragement notes. I would never have done this without the push a new project gave me.

LiberateYourArtCard

Almost all the products on this card are from Papertrey Ink. The exceptions are the patterned paper from Teresa Collins’ World Traveler paper pack, and the camera stamp from Studio Calico.

We’re having too good a time to spend much time trying to edit photos, but rest assured there are a lot of cute baby photos to come!

Happy Birthday, Sarah!

  • by

SarahCalebw

Today is Sarah’s birthday, and I would typically be feeling rather sorry for myself that I am so far away on her special day, but a week from today we’ll be heading out to meet Sarah, Adam, and Caleb in Atlanta. Sarah and Adam are involved in a Fund for Theological Education conference there, and we are happily babysitting while they are busy at the conference. When they finish, we’re all off to Hilton Head for five days, so I am sending birthday wishes across the country today, but don’t have long before I can present them in person!

Her package was sent by UPS, and ended up taking much longer to deliver than I expected, so I made an extra card (forgot to photograph the one in the package) so she’d have something to open on her birthday.

SarahBD

I’ve seen so many lovely cards made with the Daydreamer set by Papertrey that I ordered it last month. I combined the sentiment and flowers from that set with the jar from Friendship Jar: Summer to create this card. The patterned paper is also Papertrey, and the card is a Memory Box card I cut down a bit.

Happy Occasion Cards

I never shared the wedding card I made for my niece. It’s a close copy of one by Maille Bells that she created for the release of the Gracious Vases stamp set by Papertrey. I love the simplicity and elegance of it.

Wedding

Cardstock:  Select White ; Die: Mat Stack #5, Impression Plate: Diamonds; Stamps:  Gracious Vases and Delightful Dahias; Silk ribbon. (All by Papertrey Ink); Copic Glitter pens; Clear Dimensional Magic.

Last week we attended a baptism and luncheon for a friend of ours almost three year old son. I didn’t want to do a religious card, but wanted something I thought he’d enjoy.

Shine

Cardstock: Select White and Summer Sunrise (Papertrey); patterned paper: Summer Sunrise pack (Papertrey); stamps: Clear & Simple & Lighten Up Sentiments (Papertrey)
