Mom’s 90th Birthday: Part 2

  • by

Friday was Mom’s actual 90th birthday, and although we celebrated with a big party for extended family and friends a couple of weeks ago, we didn’t want to let the actual event go unnoticed. The immediate family all gathered at our house for lunch on Friday with great stories, lots of fun, and of course, another cake!

Mom-90th-cake2ed

Everyone had more cards and some gifts to share as well. Here’s the new card I made for Mom:

PinkBD

I started by die cutting two elements from Pink Fresh Studio’s “Essentials: Braided Circle” on a white linen card front. I added that to a Pale Peony card base and stamped the sentiment from Papertrey Ink’s “Birthday Basics.”

PinkBDFlat

Then I added the floral cluster from Pink Fresh Studio’s “Fancy Blooms” that was watercolored on Bristol paper and then fussy cut.

In the photo you can just barely see the Wink of Stella glitter added to the centers of the flowers, but it’s much clearer IRL.

I’m linking this card up to the following challenges:

An “Irish” Birthday

  • by

Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day and Tracy’s birthday. We’ll be spending it at Sarah’s church, a lunch out afterwards to celebrate the birthday, back for chocolate cake and ice cream, and before dinner, heading home to Rochester. We’ll drive a few hours Sunday and finish the trip Monday.

So it’s unlikely that I’ll have time to write a blog post or even link to a challenge tomorrow. The Card Concept Challenge is just perfect for a St. Patrick’s Day birthday card: Shamrock Blessings.

  TCC110 030619

One of the stamp sets in the Simon Says March Card Kit, “Wooly Lucky,” was also perfect, and I made a shaker card thinking Caleb and Hannah would appreciate the cute llama and the shaker. I also know Tracy won’t mind not getting a sophisticated card for his birthday.

Llama

I started by coloring the llama with Copic markers and fussy cutting him. Then I used a Spellbinder’s oval to die cut the center from patterned paper, “Really Rainbow Scallops” by Lawn Fawn, that came with kit, backed it with acetate, and after filling it with a sequin mixture that also came with the kit, added a foam backing to create the shaker.

LlamaFlat

I couldn’t decide how to add the sentiment to the card, but finally decided to cut a shamrock with the Cameo and then embossed the sentiment in gold. It still needed something, so I cut a second shamrock from metallic gold paper to use as a border. I popped up the llama with some dimensional tape and adhered the piece to a top-folded white card.

LlamaClose

The kit also included a gold envelope and a set of stickers, and I used two of them on the envelope.

LlamaEnvelope

And in honor of St. Patrick, an Irish Blessing:

May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life’s passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!

Take Three Thursday: Day One at Disney World

  • by

We arrived in Florida late afternoon on Tuesday. Our first day at Disney World was yesterday, and I thought I’d pop in with three quick photos from the Magic Kingdom.

Tracy and I took a day off from Disney World today and drove to St. Petersburg for lunch and a bit of shopping. We’re meeting the family for dinner in about an hour, and will spend two more days in Disney World before five of us head home to Wisconsin. Sarah gets another week in the warmer temperatures while attending a conference. I doubt she’ll get a lot of time outdoors, though. It was chilly today, but way warmer than it is in Wisconsin, and the temperatures are climbing back into the 70’s tomorrow.

Happy Birthday Hannah and Caleb

  • by

Hannah and Caleb have a shared birthday. On January 30th, Hannah turned 2 and Caleb turned 7. It’s the first year in many that we were not present for the birthday celebration. We did share the lighting of the candles and singing of “Happy Birthday” via FaceTime. When we were here in October I gave Sarah two sparkler candles from Paper Source in the shape of 2 and 7. A friend had told me about them and said they were what they used for each of their children’s birthdays. I thought they were really cool, but it didn’t turn out so well. As soon as Sarah lit the sparklers, Caleb jumped out of his seat and took off, and Hannah started to cry. There’s no blowing out sparkler candles, so we just had to wait for them to die out! By the end, they were watching with some trepidation.

We waited until we arrived on Saturday to give them their gifts and cards. Caleb is quite an artist, and wanted to know if I’d colored in the images in his card. I got a “Good job, Grandma!” response when I said I had. Hannah tried to figure out how to get the fairy off the card, but Sarah explained how the card was put together, and it survived the inspection.

CalebBD

Here’s the inside of Caleb’s card. Given the circumstances, it was the perfect sentiment. It’s also from the Winnie and Walter set.

CalebBDInside

I purchased this Neat and Tangled stamp set (“Later, Alligator”) with Caleb in mind, but expected to use it to make a card with a favorite expression of his, “See you later, Alligator.” I was going to leave it with him when we go home. But instead, I used it for his birthday card, and thought the alligators would look cute holding the banner from Winnie and Walter’s “Wish Big” stamps. During the Black Friday sales, I purchased a small set of the Picket Fence “Life Changing Blender Brushes.” I have to say, ink blending is easier with them, although I ended up using a Tim Holtz “Distress Blending Brush” as well on the grassy area to add a bit of texture. All the cloud dies are from Papertrey Ink.

HannahBD

The minute I saw the December Hero Arts Stamp Kit, I knew it was ready-made for a grandma with four granddaughters. This card is a close CASE of one Nichol Spohr posted at the tune of the kit’s release. The patterned paper is from an old Studio Calico 6X6 paper pad and the sentiment is from Papertrey Ink’s “Balloon Bash.”

HannahBDClose

Hopefully, you can seen the addition of the glitter pen to many of the stars on the patterned paper, and the Nuvo glitter to the wings. I also added a sparkly Amuse raspberry star to the sentiment. (It’s funny how tilting the card makes the left side of the card base appear blue.)

Me on Monday: Christmas Eve

  • by

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate! The meteorologist wasn’t sure if we’d have a white Christmas, but it looks like we’re well on our way. I took this photo about three hours ago, and it has continued to snow ever since.

IMG_1085ed

It was a busy weekend. The highlight was celebrating Christmas with Betsy, Matt, and the girls on Saturday night. Ella and Maddy were particularly excited.

IMG_1061ed

After our gift exchange, the rest of Betsy’s family arrived for dinner.

IMG_1069ed

The only “fail” in this photo, was forgetting to pull Maddy’s highchair out so she could be seen!

Sarah’s gifts for the girls didn’t arrive in time for the gift exchange, but arrived yesterday. After wrapping them, I took them down so they could open them this afternoon. Sarah had made each girl a beautiful book pocket pillow. Maddy had hers turned backwards, but on the other two you can see the lovely quilted patchwork on the pockets. Off course, there was a book in each pocket.

IMG_1078ed

Tonight, the table is set for tomorrow’s dinner–fourteen strong, and Tracy and I will go out to eat. That’s been the tradition for many, many years. Once the house is ready for company, off we go. It makes for a relaxed evening, but not an early one. We’ll be attending the Christmas Eve service at 11:00, and this year I am one of the readers. It’s an opportunity I enjoy fulfilling. I hope your holiday is also relaxed and fulfilling!

Happy Anniversary!

  • by

It’s Matt and Betsy’s anniversary. We’ll be babysitting tomorrow night so they can go out to dinner to celebrate. Here they are last week at the Eastman Museum with their darling girls.

Family

And here’s the card I made for them.

M&B

The first step was to emboss Reverse Confetti’s “Stitched Rays” onto Pure Poppy paper. I love this die and have used it many times in different ways. I adhered it to a white card base. Then I took a pre-cut white heart that was laying on my desk, and ran it through the die cutting machine inside Alexandra Renke’s “Square Grid” embossing folder. This is going to be a new favorite for sure. The sentiment was cut in True Black with Simon Say’s “Love You” die. After attaching the sentiment to the heart, I bumped it out with some dimensional foam circles.

M&BFlat

I’m thinking this would make a pretty good Valentine, too!

Happy Birthday, Greg & Color Throwdown Challenge

  • by

Today is my brother-in-law’s birthday. Later this evening, we’ll be celebrating with him at dinner. A week from today is my brother’s birthday. Sadly, I won’t see him on his birthday, but we’ll definitely talk on the phone. When I saw the current Color Throwdown Challenge, I knew exactly what I wanted to do for their birthday cards. Since their birthdays are so close together, I frequently make the same card for both of them.

Swatch521

More frequently than not, my idea for a card at its inception doesn’t correlate particularly well at its execution. This was an exception, and the cards turned out almost exactly the way I envisioned it.

MasculineFlata

I’m guessing the majority of the cards for this challenge use these wonderful colors—silver, black, gray, and white—to create a holiday card, but I thought they were great colors for a masculine birthday card. All the design elements were stamped with Altenew’s “Sohcahtoa” stamp set. The sentiment was embossed in silver from Papertrey Ink’s “”Good Times.”

MasculineBD

I’m also linking this up with Seize the Birthday Challenge since any birthday card works, even if you don’t use the “topping.”

Ella Turns Four!

  • by

Ella celebrated with her friends earlier in the month, but on Saturday she was officially four years old, and the family gathered to celebrate with dinner. She requested a confetti cake, no frosting which she helped make earlier in the day.

IMG_3271ed

In keeping with the theme of her party with her friends, I used her invitation as inspiration for her card, and a gift card holder.

Ella 3

I had all the necessary supplies for a space related card, having made Caleb one last year for his birthday.

EllaBD

I die cut a piece of True Black cardstock with a Simon Says “Star Stream” die and layered it on a top-folding card made from Bright Buttercup. Then I die cut a variety of planets, stars, and a rocket ship from scraps of bright cardstock, arranging them among the stars.

Ella 2

Papertrey Ink’s “Folded Pocket Tag” die arrived just a week or so ago, and worked perfectly for tucking in a gift card to Barnes & Noble. “You’re a Star” is a Simon Says die, and the ribbon is from Paper Source. Ella and I have a lunch date with a trip to Barnes & Noble to follow, so the celebration isn’t quite over.

Me on Tuesday

  • by

Joining in with Mary-Lou a day late. We had a busy week last week, but yesterday was even busier so although I got some photos ready for a blog post, there wasn’t an extra minute to write the post!

The mid-term elections were held a week ago today. Many of us were hoping for a Blue Wave, and although we didn’t quite see what we hoped for, an unusual number of women and minorities were elected to the House of Representatives, and many states turned to Democrats in the governor’s races. One race that particularly interested us was in Wisconsin where Sarah now lives. A friend of mine (who did not get elected) was running for State Assembly, and I made phone calls to get out the vote for two afternoons. A friend and I also participated in a postcard writing blitz organized by a group locally. We’ve been writing postcards for specific issues for some time now, but for the two months prior to the election focused on getting out the votes. I’ve never been particularly active politically, but the negativity and lack of cooperation between parties here has driven me to it! Here are a group of us at the Monroe County Democratic Office. I missed the big congregation of all the democratic candidates including an appearance by Kirsten Gillibrand, one of our current Senators.

IMG_0893ed

The day after the election we headed to Canada for two nights. I was quite surprised to read so much in their national paper about our elections, and equally surprised at the frankness with which they expressed opinions about our government. We talked to several people who had stayed up much later than I did on Tuesday night, curious to see the election results. Needless to say, our government policies effect their trade with us in very big ways.

We had a lovely two days, starting with an elegant breakfast in front of a fireplace on Thursday morning.

IMG_0899ed

From there we headed out to visit a couple of wineries. Two were favorites of ours, but one was new to us. We learned that the Marynissen Winery was one of the first wineries established in the Niagara-on-the-Lake area, and we had a lovely time chatting with the woman doing the tasting. We’ve never been to NOTL mid-week in the off-season so we pretty much had the wineries to ourselves. I loved the beautiful mural behind the tasting bar.

IMG_0911ed

We drove to Jordan for lunch and a visit to one of our favorite wineries, Vineland, and then headed back to NOTL to sit by the fire and read before having an elegant dinner which was part of the package deal we signed up for.

Friday we drove home in a steady snowstorm, and by the time we arrived home the ground was covered. Fortunately, it didn’t stay around too long. I had been invited to a dinner party for a group of folks who organized a fabulous concert at our church to benefit two refugee centers in Rochester. I volunteer at one of those centers, and made a small contribution to the planning of the event. The star performer was Ayman Jarjour, a professional classical guitarist who was born in Syria. (The man in the red sweater.) He now travels around the world performing for free to raise funds to support refugee settlement. He was joined by three doctoral student in the classical guitar program at the Eastman School of Music. They played both at the Friday night dinner (an intimate gathering) and at the formal concert the next day.

IMG_0926ed

The woman playing the hammer dulcimer is a local musician who has performed professionally in the area for many, many years and was one of the organizers of the concert.

IMG_0935ed

The concert was very well attended, and we raised over $2,000 dollars.

On Sunday we attended a family celebration—Ella’s fourth birthday party for her friends. Her real birthday isn’t until the Saturday after Thanksgiving, but since so many families travel over the holiday her party was held earlier. No one is more excited than Ella to celebrate a birthday. She chose “Night” as her theme, so Betsy figured out that a space-themed party would meet her expectations. And it did. Here’s the birthday girl, “pleased as punch” to be the center of attention. Check out the pattern of her dress!

Our local grocery store, Wegmans, produces the best birthday cakes. They are a lot of fun, and better yet, delicious!

IMG_0936ed

Ella’s big sister, Skylar, is on the left, and her very best friend, Olivia is on the right. The party was a big hit with Ella’s friends as well.

I did get some creative time on Sunday before the party and caught up with the 25 Tags of Christmas project. I’ll be back with the next installment soon. Today, I need to do more catch-up for yesterday’s tag and today’s. Hope your week is off to a good start.

Happy Birthday, Skylar

  • by

It’s been a crazy week. I had at least three blog posts planned, but didn’t end up with time to write any of them. This is being written at the last minute as we pack up for a short road trip and then a ten day stay with Sarah, Adam, Caleb, and Hannah. I’m looking forward to the time away, and to spending time with family!

Yesterday, Miss Skylar turned seven! It seems like just yesterday she was turning three. Betsy hosted a family dinner party last night for her, and today there was a kids’ party at a trampoline center (I think.) Matt told us not to bother to come to that since we’d never get any time with the kids and it would be “crazy.” He was probably right, and I definitely needed the time today to finish getting ready for the trip.

Here are some pics from the party last night.

Miss Madelyn, who has grown 3 1/2 inches since January. She LOVES the monkey bars, the swings, and the slide.

The theme for Skylar’s party was mermaids. September’s Simon Says Card Kit featured mermaids, and I almost passed on it. Then I remembered I have four granddaughters seven years and under so I chose to have it sent. So glad I did. It was perfect for this year’s birthday card.

Mermaid2

I purchased the Simon Says “Waves” stencil which I’m sure I’ll use again, and blended a variety of blue Distress Oxide inks on a piece of watercolor paper. Then I stamped the mermaid and colored her with Copic markers. The sentiment on the front of the card comes from a Stampendous set called “Ocean Wisdom.” After adding some glitter to the mermaid’s fins with a Spectrum Noir glitter pen and three sequins, I adhered the stamped piece to a card made from Hawaiian Shores.

Here’s a closer look at the sparkly mermaid.

MermaidClose

I’m taking my laptop and external hard drive with me, so hope to get the planned blog posts up mid-week when we get to Sarah’s. Hopefully, there’ll be some photos from the road trip as well. For sure, I’ll be seeing you next week with the last of the Summer Photography Scavenger Hunt photos—the last of which I snapped last night!

First Day of School

  • by

Well, actually, Caleb attended full-day kindergarten last year, but today marked the first day of first grade and his very first school bus ride. For both pre-school and kindergarten he could walk to school. It’s a new town as well, and he’s attending a magnet school with grades K-8 in the same building. Sarah was a bit concerned about putting him on a bus with 8th graders and wondered if she should drive him the first day, but Caleb decided he wanted to ride the bus. In anticipation of this very big first day, I sent Caleb a card. As soon as I saw the “School Bus Messages” set during the July or August release at Simon Says, I knew I had to have it. (There are still three more very first days to come for my grandchildren!)

School Bus

I stamped the bus and colored it with Copic markers before cutting it out by hand. Then I stamped, cut, and colored two cute critters—one from Simon Says ” Quite the Pear,” and one from Simon Says “Wild Cuddly Critters,” I cut them to fit into the school bus windows. Another new product from that Simon Says order was the “Diamond Pattern” card cover die. (I already have lots of ideas for using that.) I layered it on a card made from Papertrey’s “Bright Buttercup,” and then adhered the school bus, adding some Crystal Nuvo to the lights on the school bus. The sentiment is also from the “School Bus Messages” set.

School Bus Close

We were anxious to hear about Caleb’s first day, and had a great FaceTime conversation with him when he got home. The bus ride was fine (and not as long as anticipated), and he had a great first day just as we wished for him.

Happy Birthday, America, and Happy Birthday, Mom!

  • by

Today is the Fourth of July, a celebration of all the good things that America is! Despite the multitude of serious problems in this country, we continue to be blessed in so many ways. I took this photo on Flag Day when Tracy’s family was at Honeoye Lake.

IMG_9618ed

Tomorrow is my mother-in-law’s birthday, but we celebrated today with a barbecue at my sister-in-law’s house. There are only two of the five siblings in town this week, so it was a smaller gathering than usual. But not less festive!

IMG_9798ed

Actually, Jill managed to get the brother from Austin on the computer and the one from Phoenix on Tracy’s phone to sing “Happy Birthday,” and watch Mom open her gift. Being 89, there’s not much Mom needs, but family time means everything to her. This year we decided to give her a series of dinners out when as many of us are in town as possible. She was delighted as you can see.

IMG_9807ed

Tracy’s sister excels in writing poems for such gifts. In the past we’ve gifted her with floral arrangements that arrive at her home several times during the year, and other group gifts. Jill always manages to come up with just the right words. Here’s this year’s:

IMG_9810ed

Ellie is a huge fan of flowers, so I chose one of my most elegant floral stamps, “Beautiful Flowers,” that was part of a recent Simon Says card kit. I only used a part of the floral arrangement and got my inspiration here. I love Yana’s work, but this time, I decided I didn’t like the way her background came out. I decided to see if I could pull off doing coloring between the flowers that would look good on black cardstock instead of coloring the entire background.

EllieBD

I stamped the image in black waterproof ink on Bristol paper, and watercolored it with my Zig Clean Color and SAI Watercolor markers. Before I fussy cut around them, I colored the white spaces between the flowers with a black Copic marker which worked out perfectly. I knew I’d never be able to fussy cut the small opening between the flowers.

EllieBDFlat

I embossed a sentiment from the same stamp set in white before arranging the flowers and adhering them with liquid adhesive. I was so anxious about not smearing the glue that I didn’t pay close enough attention to the placement of the flowers, so the sentiment is closer to the arrangement than I would like. By the time I realized it, it was too late, the flowers were permanently attached.

We’re off to spend a few days with Matt and his family and to celebrate another birthday on Saturday.

Happy Birthday, Betsy!

  • by

Today is Betsy’s birthday, and we celebrated with her family and some close friends at a Korean restaurant. I knew it was one of their favorite restaurants but I had never been there. Skylar’s favorite dish is the pickled radishes which I have to admit are pretty good. The fried dumplings were also excellent as well as the shrimp and rice dish I had. We had a great time. Here are the three little girls helping Mama blow out the candles. The cake was large enough for at least four more families, so Pam is taking the left-overs to the refugee center tomorrow. The students there will make short work of it!

P4240491ed

I made Betsy’s card with new sets from Papertrey Ink called “Butterfly Blooms” and “A Bit More Butterfly Blooms.” The card is one of several I’ve made recently with these butterflies so you’ll be seeing more of them in the week(s) to come. This might be my favorite though.

BetsyBD

I stamped the two butterflies on Neenah Solar White and colored them with Copic markers. Once I prepared the Select White card base, I added a piece of patterned paper from Paper Studio’s “Petals and Blooms” paper pack that I picked up at Hobby Lobby a few weeks ago. In my stash I found a gorgeous piece of black embossed paper which I die cut with a stitched oval and used as the focal point for the butterflies. Here’s a closer look at the embossed paper.

BetsyBDClose

I’ve had the pretty flower sequins for a long time, too. I think they might have come from Impress stamps, but I can’t really remember for sure.

BetsyBDFlat

The sentiment was stamped on a banner die cut with an old Spellbinders die, and comes from Papertrey’s $5 “Ways to Say: Birthday” mini-set. I’ll be back tomorrow with a card for the Papertrey Ink blog hop.

Monday Musings

  • by

Officially, it’s the last day of winter although you’d hardly know it by looking out my window. It’s a bright, sunny day but our yard is still blanketed by nearly a foot of snow. It’s been way too cold for the snow to melt from most lawns. Given that tomorrow is the first day of spring, I must get the last two photos up for the Winter Scavenger Hunt—the two I neglected to take in Morocco, but fortunately, captured at The Container Store in Chicago before we left.

Number 6 was “wrapping paper” and #15 was bow. The Container Store always has a wonderful selection of wrapping paper.

WrappingPaper

This giant bow was on sale after the Christmas rush.

Bow

Tracy’s birthday celebration turned out more festive than we anticipated. Betsy’s sister from Boston, as well as her niece, joined us for the birthday dinner. I couldn’t get everyone in the iPhoto picture so I popped the two into a digital template.

Dinner

His cake was his favorite, a chocolate raspberry torte from the neighborhood Jewish bakery.

IMG_9199ed

Of course, he had help blowing out the candles. (Actually, he did it twice—once with Skylar and once with Ella. No one captured the second one.

IMG_9200ed

We had planned a quiet day at home for his actual birthday on St. Patrick’s Day. But I got an email a couple of days prior from one of our favorite wineries on Seneca Lake announcing Customer Appreciation Day. It was another bright, sunny day so we headed down to the Finger Lakes late in the afternoon.

IMG_9188ed

Silver Thread is an (almost) organic winery we’ve been visiting for many years. They have a gorgeous setting overlooking the lake.

IMG_9186ed

We had a little time before our dinner reservations, so we stopped at another winery—one we hadn’t visited in years. We had a fun time at the tasting bar, and ended up taking home some wine from both wineries. As you can see in both photos, they have a lot less snow than we do. We get a lot of our snow from a phenomenon called “lake effect” being just east of Lake Erie and right on Lake Ontario.

IMG_9190ed

I’d made reservations at Dano’s on Seneca Lake. It had been highly recommended by friends of ours years ago, but we’d never been. It was a charming place—great views and even better food!

IMG_9191ed

IMG_9193ed

We both had Irish bangers and mash. It’s one of our favorite dishes at an Irish pub in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, but this was the best bangers and mash we’d ever had.

IMG_9194ed

When we got home we had a great FaceTime call with Sarah and her family with lots of birthday singing on the part of the six year old. All in all, a fine way to celebrate a big birthday.

Happy Birthday, Matt!

  • by

Matt turned 35 today. How that is possible is amazing not only to me, but to him as well. We were there for a birthday dinner of pizza, and his favorite, a Wegman’s chocolate chip cookie cake. The two older girls were anxious to help Dad blow out his candles.

IMG_9107ed

Here’s his birthday card.

MattBD

The three circles were die cut from silver and gray cardstock and then stamped with images from Papertrey Ink’s “Initial Sentiments: Birthday.” The large initial stamp was embossed in silver, and the tiny star was die cut from Smoky Shadow cardstock with the “Holiday Shapes” die from Simon Says. Then the circles were arranged on a rectangle die cut with the “Stitched Rectangle” die, also Simon Says, and adhered to a card made from Fog cardstock.

MattBDFlat

Happy Birthday, Matt! Here’s to a great year ahead. I’m linking this card up to the Simon Says Wednesday Challenge: Anything Goes.
