The Birthday Girl

  • by

Yesterday was Sarah’s birthday, and luckily for us, it was the second year in a row she’s been here to celebrate. I didn’t post yesterday because the celebration didn’t end until tonight when Adam arrived. Actually the birthday began mid-week when her first gift arrived from Amazon. Sarah’s become the DIY queen in the last several months. She’s been finding free or very inexpensive furniture and other goodies on Craig’s list and refinishing or repurposing them. So this year, she asked for a power tool. After much consultation with her very handy father, she decided on a scroll saw.

Somehow I haven’t gotten a photo of the really cute toys she’s made for Caleb–a whale, a school of fish, a darling hedgehog and more. Today she finished painting and adding the oil/beeswax finish to all of them.

Somewhere in her search about the Rochester area, she came across a reference to the Avon Flea Market. We’ve never been, but yesterday morning we headed out. It turned out to be a lot of fun and we all came home with something.

IMG_6645ed_blog

Turns out Matchbook cars are a big collectors’ item, and there were hundreds of them for Caleb to look at.

IMG_6646ed_blog

But interestingly, he didn’t come home with any of them. Instead he came home with a bin of great alphabet blocks that were 50% off the already reasonable asking price.

IMG_6665ed_blog

I bought an old dictionary for $3 to use in art journaling and an antique (or just old) folding six-foot measuring stick.

IMG_6668ed_blog

Tracy and a friend have gotten into model railroads since they’ve retired, and Tracy found a really cute N-gauge train that works great. (I think Caleb thought this was the best find of all.)

IMG_6677ed_blog

But Sarah negotiated the best deal for a mitre saw.

IMG_6669ed_blog

Last night we joined Tracy’s mom and siblings at Conesus Lake where they’ve rented a cottage for the week, and after dinner celebrated with a cake.

IMG_6687ed_blog

Tonight Matt, Betsy, and Skylar came to dinner, and we had an ice cream pie from Sarah’s favorite soft ice cream shop. Their chocolate almond ice cream is to die for, and the pie might even be better!

BDCake8.4_blog

Given Sarah’s new hobby, I decided to break out a stamp set I’ve had for a couple of years. I’ve hardly used it, and when I bought it I certainly didn’t have Sarah in mind. It’s a definite case of a card Maille Belle did for the release of the set at Papertrey Ink.

SarahBD

All in all, I think Sarah had a good birthday. She was definitely glad to see Adam tonight who just returned from a mission trip in Havana, Cuba. Their departure was delayed by 12 hours, so he was a day late arriving in Chicago, and didn’t get here until just after we finished dinner, but before Matt and Betsy had to take Skylar home for bed. They’ll be here for the rest of the week, and we’ll be heading to the lake after naps each day.

Zoom In, Zoom Out: Week 22

  • by

I’m popping in to post my Zoom In, Zoom Out, but it’s probably my last post for a week, and it will be awhile before I catch up with all of you as well.  Sarah and Caleb arrive tomorrow for five days. When Matt and Betsy got married in December it was a very small, immediate family, event. They knew then they’d want to have a party for the extended family and friends and it’s this Saturday. My brother and niece are arriving on Saturday morning, so we’ll have a full house for the weekend. I’m excited to have family here and to see some friends we haven’t seen in quite some time.

Last weekend was busy too. We spent all day Saturday and Sunday (and evening) helping Matt and Betsy move into their new house. It’s a great house, with lots of room for a growing family, but the best part of all is the fabulous new yard. The house needs some updating (mostly painting), but the yard is perfect just the way it is.

SkylarYard_blog

Skylar is already enjoying it!

Then on Monday we got our vegetables planted at the community garden. I’m hoping this is a more successful year. Last year the torrential rains caused root rot, and we got less than half the yield we usually get.

Garden_blog

When we bought our house nearly 29 years ago, we discovered a peony tree in our back yard. It’s in the lower yard, and hard to see from the house or the patio. A few years ago when Matt was living with us, he picked one and put it in a bowl. Ever since we’ve brought them in to enjoy for a week or so while they bloom. The blossoms are huge and so beautiful.

Zoom In, Zoom Out: Easter Fun!

  • by

The Typepad platform has been down (in my case) for over four days. Whoever or whatever hacked the site certainly caused a big hassle!

Zoom-in-zoom-out-button

But it’s back up today in time for Helena’s meme Zoom In, Zoom Out. This week was a no-brainer. After church we quickly changed clothes and went to Matt and Betsy’s to “help” Skylar with her Easter egg hunt. She loved it. We loved it.

Zoom Out

IMG_4129ed_blog

Zoom In

IMG_4132ed_blog

“Oh, no,” cried Skylar when she saw this egg. Although the plastic eggs had only been in the yard a few minutes before we arrived, a squirrel had eaten away both ends of the egg and stolen the M&M inside!

We found another surprise during the Easter egg hunt, just outside the fenced in yard.

IMG_4153ed_blog

If you look closely you can see a nest with three tiny eggs. Here’s the momma who wandered off the nest as Skylar was looking for eggs along the fence. She didn’t seem overly concerned about us at all.

IMG_4155ed_blog

A family friend of Betsy’s arrived with a little wagon filled with two stuffed bunnies while we were there. Skylar loved the bunnies, but the wagon was the best gift.

IMG_4179ed_blog

Fortunately, Skylar is tiny so she’s not too big to be hauled around in the wagon herself. After her ride, she hoped her dad could get in. Not so much.

IMG_4170ed_blog

While we were in Chicago we took Caleb to the Museum of Science and Industry. Grandpa picked out a bubble gun for Skylar, and it was a huge hit with both Skylar and her dad.

I loved the pretty bokeh in this one. I hope you had a lovely weekend. Our weather was spectacular for a Rochester Easter, but it’s turned cold and rainy again today. Ah, Spring in western New York!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day Birthday

  • by

Today is Tracy’s birthday, and we had lots of fun celebrating tonight. I thought I’d share Tracy’s birthday card first since I’m linking it to the new (and timely) Addicted to CAS challenge: Lucky!

ATCAS - code word luck

It’s another inlaid die with a shamrock sticker I found at Michael’s.

T'sBD

Both the die cut and the sentiment underneath are from Simon Says, “Happy.” Papertrey’s New Leaf card stock is the perfect color for St. Patrick’s Day, and I’m always drawn to a bright green and black combination.

When I went to set the table I was surprised to find I had no green placemats. The last couple of years we haven’t been home for Tracy’s birthday, but I found great bright green ones on sale at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

IMG_3572ed_blog

I found some lucky gold coins at Michaels. Skylar gathered them all up after dinner and put them in the toy box!

IMG_3560ed_blog

Matt, Betsy, and Skylar came for dinner. After we ate, we did Face Time with Sarah, Adam, and Caleb on the iPad. Technology is just the best!

IMG_3590ed_blog

Skylar and Caleb started showing one another their cars. It went on for quite some time.

IMG_3594ed_blog

Afterwards we had dessert. Tracy had banana cream pie (his favorite) but I also bought some cupcakes for the rest of us so we’d have something to put birthday candles on. I was holding the cupcakes for the blowing out of candles so there are no photos of the event.

IMG_3575edblog

IMG_3581ed_blog

And opened up gifts.

IMG_3565ed_blog

Initially Skylar wanted no photos on the way out.

IMG_3606ed_blog

But she relented, and Grandma was grateful!

Whirlwind

  • by

It’s been twelve days since I’ve had time to write a blog post, but I think you’ll understand why when you see what’s been going on around here. I flew off to Chicago on December 5th to spend a weekend with Sarah, Adam, and Caleb.

While I was there Tracy sent a Polar Express G-gauge model railroad train to Caleb to go around his Christmas tree. Matt was never much interested in trains, but Caleb loves them. Here’s a photo of Caleb “talking” to Grandpa on Face Time after he’s seen the train first thing in the morning.

IMG_1898edblog

He was smitten from the first go-around.

IMG_1903edblog

Caleb got a new haircut, we made cookies, read books, went to church and an Advent luncheon, and most important, went to visit Santa Claus.

IMG_1963edblog

IMG_1965edblog

My flight on Monday was cancelled, so I won an extra day in Chicago, but had to fly into Buffalo on Tuesday. Tracy didn’t mind driving to pick me up, and we got home just as another snow storm hit the area. I had just two days to get ready for the next big event:  Matt and Betsy’s wedding!

Friday afternoon, Sarah, Adam, and Caleb arrived here so Adam could officiate at the wedding. I hosted the non-rehearsal dinner for both families on Friday night. I was too busy to take photos, but here’s a shot of the cheesecake on the table before I put it in the fridge.

IMG_5641edblog

Matt and Betsy decided to get married about six weeks ago, and didn’t want to wait until after the holidays. They planned the perfect immediate family-only wedding at the lovely Strathallan Hotel. The wedding took place on the ninth floor overlooking the city of Rochester. I’m sure the photographer will have better photos, but I couldn’t resist taking my camera along.

It was Adam’s first wedding ceremony, and his words on love and marriage were thoughtful and so appropriate.

IMG_5645edblog

Because it was just family, Caleb and Skylar were able to sit quietly and color during the ceremony.

Following the ceremony, we all sat down to a lovely and delicious brunch. I don’t have any photos of the meal, but the centerpieces were beautiful.

IMG_2078edblog

Sarah, Adam, and Caleb’s flight home was cancelled, rescheduled, and cancelled again. Ah, the joys of winter travel. They finally got off around noon yesterday, but it gave us another morning together, and Caleb time to play with some new toys.

  IMG_2161edblog

It’s just a little over a week until Christmas Day! Still on the list to do: wrap gifts, bake cookies, and get ready for the family dinner on Christmas Day. My calendar is filled with social events this week:  bridge, lunch and breakfast out with friends, a committee meeting followed by dinner, and dinner here with good friends on both Tuesday and Saturday nights. But that’s the stuff that’s most important—being with friends and family. The Christmas Journal (I’m keeping up with the journaling) and the blog can wait until there are a few free moments.

Happy Birthday, Skylar!

  • by

Skylar is two today. Now, how did that happen so quickly? Betsy took this photo of her in her cute birthday shirt.

SkylarBDTee_blog

And here’s her birthday card. The pink polka dots match the cute chair we bought her for her birthday. It’s out being monogrammed, so I don’t have a photo with her in her new chair yet.

SkylarBD

I cased the design of the card (sentiments to make the shape of a birthday cake) from Maile Belles.

Here’s a close-up of the sparkly details. Skylar is definitely a fan of sparkly. The other night when she stopped by for a quick visit, she had on new sneakers that flash on and off.

And here she is on one of her birthday gifts.

Happy Birthday, Sarah! & Family Fun

  • by

Sarah’s birthday was August 3rd, but we waited until she arrived with Adam and Caleb on Monday to celebrate. Matt, Betsy, and Skylar came to dinner, and we had a great time. From elementary school on, the only birthday cake Sarah ever wanted was an ice cream cake, and that was her request again. There were three candles for 33 years. 🙂

BirthdayGirl_blog

Skylar wasn’t quite sure what to make of having another toddler in our house. Initially she told Caleb that the toys were “mine,” but she soon recovered, and they had a lot of fun running up and down our driveway together, shouting and laughing.

Runners2_blog

Skylar kept losing one shoe, and eventually was running barefoot. I was just glad neither of them fell!

Runners1_blog

But this is my favorite photo of the evening –the two of them on our poor glider at the bottom of the driveway that’s waiting to be refinished.

SkylarCaleb1_blog

Here’s the card I made for Sarah. Her personal “symbol” is a tree, and she has a wonderful one designed by Adam on her business cards and website. There’s a tree hanging over their bed, a colorful tree that hung over the fireplace in Ashland, and one on her favorite totebag. When I bought the “All Seasons Tree” die by Simon Says , I knew it would be on her next birthday card.

SarahBD

I’m linking this up at the Moxie Fab Birthday Card challenge. It’s the last of the white woodgrain cardstock that came in a Simon Says card kit mounted onto a green Memory Box card. The sentiment is an old wooden stamp from A Muse that I’ve had for years stamped onto one of Papertrey’s banner dies.

Yesterday, all the cousins (but one who couldn’t come) gathered at Conesus Lake. We don’t think they’ve ever been all together in one place before. They arrived from Illinois, Arizona, Oregon, Vermont, and Louisana as well as locally. The only damper on the day was the my mother-in-law was too ill to join us. She had been looking forward to this day for months! But we got great photos. First, one of all the cousins and their children.

Cousins4X6_blog

A pretty good-looking group, if I do say so myself!

And then one of all of us. I’m amazed that we actually got one with everyone (except Caleb) looking at the camera with a smile on their face, and their eyes open!

Family2_4X6_blog

Tomorrow Adam heads back to Chicago. Sarah and Caleb are staying for the last two days at the lake (we drive back and forth each day), and we’ll be driving them home. We’ll leave sometime on Sunday and spend one night on the road. Tracy and I are planning to spend a week in Chicago, helping to unpack a house full of boxes and get everything settled. Once we get back home, my brother is coming for a few days.

I have a few posts to put up for the time we’re away, but I won’t have much time to visit blogs or comment. I’ll be sure to catch up with all of you toward the end of August.

Anniversary Post and 52/50

  • by

We had a lovely day Sunday celebrating our anniversary along Seneca Lake. Our first stop was a new to us winery, Damiani. The staff was delightful, and so were the wines. Later that night, we ended up choosing one of their wines to have with our dinner. Tracy was anxious to get back to a lovely, small organic winery called Silver Thread. Although their wines are a bit more pricey, their whites are just perfect for summer entertaining on the patio.

The view from Silver Thread is not bad either.

ViewFromSilverThread_blog

This is my pick for this week (#31) for the 52/50 project.

The grapes are still green, but beautiful.

Grapes2_blog

But the best part of the day was the fabulous dinner at Suzanne’s.

Suzanne's_blog

It’s a beautiful setting, overlooking the lake. If you look closely you can see tables and chairs on the porch for dining. We opted to eat inside as it had rained off and on all day.

Imagine my surprise, when I looked at the menus Tracy and I were handed.

Menu_blog

Not only did we get anniversary wishes from the hostess and our waitress, but the chef came out at the end of the meal to wish us happy anniversary.

The food was amazing. Each of us chose a different entree, and all four of us were delighted with our choices. Before dinner we were offered a complimentary appetizer, and we shared a cheese plate as well.

CheesePlate_blog

Much of the food served here is sourced locally, and if it’s not, you know where it came from. All four cheeses were from New York, three of them from the Finger Lakes. My rack of lamb came from Colorado and was cooked to perfection.

There are beautiful gardens surrounding Suzanne’s but by the time we finished dinner, it was (once again) raining, so we’ll have to save those for another trip. At the end of the meal, we were given our menus rolled up and tied with a green bow. I did take a photo, but the light was so poor for the iPhone by that time, that it’s not very good.

So this week’s 52/50 photo is at the top of the post, and here are the last few weeks in reverse order:

Happy Anniversary to Us & a CASology Challenge

  • by

Today is our 40th anniversary. Last night we both agreed it surely hasn’t felt like 40 years—we can’t be THAT old! But it is, nonetheless, and we’ve had our big anniversary trip already. But we didn’t want the day to pass without marking it in some way, so a bit later we’re off to Seneca Lake with our good friends, Bob and Cathy. We have two wineries to check out, and a farmer’s market I want to explore. Then we’ll have dinner at Suzanne’s Fine Cuisine, a restaurant highly recommended by friends and in the book, Summer in a Glass, which we both finished reading this month.

I thought I’d post this card tonight with a few photos of our day, but I want to link it up to the CASology challenge for this week, and the link closes before we’ll get home. I recently discovered this challenge on Cassandra’s blog, but haven’t had much time to play along this month.*

Week 54 - Gold
I cased the design for this card from Nora on A Creative Touch. The woodgrain cardstock and the chipboard hearts both came from a Simon Says Card Kit. The die is also Simon Says, and the sentiment is from Papertrey Ink’s “Live Love Life.” The gold paper I’ve had in my stash for years. (The store where I bought it closed at least 10 years ago.) I love it, and this is the last piece of it.

AnniversaryCard

The inside sentiment (I forgot to photograph it before I wrote a note inside) reads: “A good life is a collection of happy moments,” and we’ve had 40 wonderful years of happy moments together. There’s no one I’d rather spend time with! I’ll be back tomorrow, hopefully with a few shots of a day in the Finger Lakes (though it’s a bit drizzly now), and a 52/50 update.

*Great update on our friend, Mike! He was released from the ICU Friday night, and is walking around the nursing station, eating real food, and joking with us all. He’s still very tired, and will need some weeks of rehab, but a complete recovery is within reach! Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers.

Big Moves

  • by

It’s going to be a very exciting July here. Both of my kids are making big moves in the next few weeks. And both moves bring them MUCH CLOSER to us!

SarahAdamCaleb_blog

Adam has accepted a new call as Associate Pastor at the Winnetka Presbyterian Church in Winnetka, Illinois. It’s a North Shore community an hour or so north of Chicago, and a 10 1/2 hour drive from Rochester. To say we’re excited for them, and about the move is to put it mildly. They’ve been in Chicago for the last week. You can read a bit about the church festivities here on Adam’s blog. They’ve signed a lease on a house just a few miles from the church and next-door to a rec center and a park. There are many, many good things about this new call beyond two parents/grandparents who are delighted to be within driving distance again after their six years on the west coast. They’ll be in Winnetka by August 1.

Then on Mother’s Day, Matt told us he was planning to move back to Rochester to be with Betsy and Skylar. Over Father’s Day weekend, he had two interviews, and received two job offers. He’s accepted the job at one of the premier nursery/landscaping concerns here, and hopefully it will offer him some opportunities to learn the nursery side of the business. Here they are goofing around for the camera on Father’s Day.

MattBetsySkylar_blog

This is Matt’s last week on the job in Denver. He’ll be packing up over the weekend, and driving home next week. His first day of work at the new job is July 8th. He and Betsy will be less than two miles from us, and we’re just delighted!

Happy Father’s Day & Two Challenges

  • by

It’s a day to celebrate fatherhood here in the States. Two of my three favorite dads are here with me today, which makes for a good celebration. Matt, Betsy, and Skylar were here for brunch, and later we’ll be going out to dinner. It’s raining (again), but at least we don’t have the flooding that’s plaguing the middle of the country.

I think I got Adam’s card in the mail just in time. Hopefully, it arrived in Oregon before today. I think it’s my favorite.

AwesomeDad

The dark brown cardstock came from the June Simon Says card kit. The Absolutely die and awesome stamp are also from Simon Says, and the Thickers are Amy Tan for American Craft. I don’t often use Thickers on a card, but it worked well here.

The materials for the next card (for Tracy) almost all came from the June kit except for the map paper which was from an old October Afternoon collection called “Boarding Pass.” It started with this inspiration card from Kristina Werner, though I ended up in a totally different place.

What?

The card that holds the sentiment (from a Kelly Purkey set called “Dude”) is from a collection of cards by Basic Grey. Both the pad of cards and the stamp set were part of the June kit. I forgot to take a photo of the inside of the card, but I used two tickets from Papertrey’s set called “Big Ticket Basics.” They seemed to fit the theme perfectly. I coated the heart with some Glossy Accents.

I stuck with the same theme for Matt’s card, using a different map from the “Boarding Pass” collection. This card was inspired by one of Nicole Heady’s cards for a Papertrey release party awhile ago.

OutOfWorld

The plane which I colored with Copics and cut out came from “Fly Away” and neatly fit over a printed plane in the patterned paper. The sentiment is from the Boy Basics series by the same name. The last two cards meet the CASual Friday Challenge this week:  MAPQUEST.

Cfc105

And the last card also meets this week’s Simon Says Challenge:  TRANSPORT.

Weekend Recap

  • by

I had originally planned for this to be at least a two-part blog post, but the weekend proved busier than I expected. Friday our niece, Grace, graduated from the University of Buffalo. She is a fabulous artist, and spent one semester in Florence, Italy studying art, but her major is accounting. She’s ready now to start studying for her CPA license which turns out to be quite an involved process. This summer she’ll be interning here in Rochester with a large accounting firm. We celebrated with a party in Buffalo Friday night.

GraceBalloon_blog

Her brother was here from Oregon, and her sister from Vermont, so I thought a family photo was in order.

Family3_blog

Here’s the card I made to celebrate this big event. It’s a close copy to one Nicole Heady created for the release of this stamp set.

Graduation

UB’s colors are gray and blue. I tried to make it a bit more feminine by adding a couple of rhinestone starrs. All the stamps are from Papertrey Ink’s For the Graduate. Once every year or so I’m very glad to have a nice graduation set.

Unexpectedly, we got a break in the rainy weather Saturday afternoon. It was chilly, but sunny, so we headed to the Lilac Festival to grab a sandwich for our dinner. I was wrong in my earlier post, there aren’t 500 bushes, but 500 varieties of lilacs on over 1200 bushes! Here are a couple more shots now that the lilacs are at peak.

While we were at the graduation party Matt arrived for the weekend. We had a nice visit on Saturday. Sunday I hosted a brunch after church for Tracy’s mom and sister and her family. Matt, Skylar, and Betsy came to visit as well.

I had a lot of fun making Mother’s Day cards, and used a template from Rebecca Cooper at Simple As That to make some bookmarks for Sarah and Betsy. I don’t think Betsy is a big reader, but Sarah certainly is, and they were too cute not to do. Both women loved them.

I recently acquired a few Gelatoes from Faber-Castell that I wanted to try out. The flowers & leaves on Betsy’s card was colored with some of the metallic Gelatoes with shading done with the Faber-Castell markers. I’m not a convert yet, but I’ll be giving them another try or two soon. I couldn’t get a photo that showed the sheen of the metallic Gelatoes.

MothersDayBA

The flower and leaves are from Papertrey’s “Friends Til the End” set, and the sentiment from the stamp set included with May’s card kit from Simon Says. The ribbon is ages old from my stash.

My mother-in-law’s card was made with a fun product from the card kit as well.

MothersDayEllie

This embossed card front panel came with the kit. I backed it with a dotted paper by A Muse, and added more flowers from Papertrey’s “Rosie Posie.” A bottle of pink Perfect Pearls was also in the kit, and I used it to add centers to the embossed flowers.

Sarah’s more a fan of clean and simple, but all the stamps for her card also came in the May kit. I love the sketched banner, and have seen several cards around blogland where stamps like these are overlapped. The papers are all from Papertrey Ink.

MothersDaySarah

One of the things I like about the Simon Says kits is how versatile they are. These are all quite different cards, and yet many of the supplies came from the one kit.

I hope you had a fabulous Mother’s Day! Betsy celebrated later in the day with her family, and Matt, Tracy, and I had dinner on Consesus Lake. When we made the reservations, we were hoping to eat outside, but there was actually snow in the air for a few minutes yesterday. But I got my required mother and son photo after dinner before the weather turned nasty again.

MattKarenMothersDay_blog

Thanks for sticking with me on a rather long, photo-heavy post. I have one more post to go up before we leave tomorrow, and one scheduled while we’re away, but it’s likely to be very quiet here for the next two weeks.

Oregon Day Trips

  • by

It’s still cold and snowy in western New York, but we’ve had fabulous weather in southern Oregon. Sarah, Tracy, and I visited Harry and David’s flagship store in Medford on Friday and took the factory tour.

TourBus_edited-1w

We had a wonderful tour guide. The production line moves so quickly it’s hard to believe how fast some of the basket packers can work! We loved watching them make Moose Munch and arrived just as the caramel mixture reached the right temperature for adding the popcorn and nuts.

MooseMunchDiptych

We came home with three different kinds of Moose Munch along with quite a few other goodies.

TruckDiptych

I loved their old pick-up on display. Harry and David (and the Medford region) are renowned for their pears which they used as a decoration on the truck rails.

While we were on the tour, the guide asked me what we had been doing while we were visiting here. I mentioned that I’d love to have gone to Crater Lake, but that it wasn’t a particularly great time to visit. She said she’d talked to several folks that had been there that week, and that it was wonderful. We checked the weather, and discovered the temperature for Crater Lake on Saturday was supposed to be in the 50’s, so after breakfast at The Breadboard in Ashland, Sarah, Tracy, Caleb and I took off for Crater Lake. Adam opted to stay at home and get some quiet time. The drive from Ashland to Crater Lake is wonderful. Despite the warm temperatures, there is still a LOT of snow at Crater Lake. The annual snowfall there is 44 ft. (the equivalent of over an inch of snow falling every single day!)

Sign_edited-1w

SteelVisitorCenter_edited-1w

After some time at the visitor center, we headed up to the Rim. Crater Lake is reputedly the cleanest water in the world. Crater Lake gets no water from rivers or streams, so all the water comes from the sky. According to the newsletter, it’s cleaner than the water that comes from your faucet at home.

Blog Update & 52/50 Week 13

  • by

EasterCards

First off, Happy Easter! I hope you’ve had a wonderful holiday. After days of sunshine and warm weather, we awoke to much cooler temperatures and a steady rain. It cancelled the Easter egg hunt in the church yard, but one was held in the Celebration Center. Caleb gathered about eight eggs before he lost interest.

If you’re reading this in a reader, hop over to see the new blog design. Random Reflections has been in need of an update for quite some time, but I’m always reluctant to mess around with it for fear I’ll do permanent damage. So I signed up for Jessica Sprague’s “Bloom Your Blog” course. Like every class I’ve taken with her, it was wonderful. Lots of great information, clearly presented on both videos and pdfs.

One of the first things I decided I wanted was a two-column blog instead of a three column one. It turns out that to have the dimensions I wanted I would need to upgrade to the next level at Typepad which I’m not yet willing to do. Typepad offers a variety of premade themes, and I found one that I liked a lot except for the overlay on the banner. Once again, in order to eliminate it, I’d have to upgrade. Thanks to Adam, I was able to get a new banner designed that works with it, and I think I’ll be able to use other photos as well. Along with quite a bit of frustration, I’ve learned a lot and have more confidence about how to make changes on the blog. It doesn’t pay to let it go for so long.

I deleted a few items from the sidebar that were outdated, and updated my Photo-a-Day blog. That’s another frustration as it clips the photos, so if you want to see the whole photo, you need to click on the sidebar photo within that album. But it’s a great place to keep my Project 365. If I get time, I’ll get January and February up as well.

Next on the agenda is to get some social media buttons up and add a signature for the blog posts. I thought they might be done by now, but we were on a road trip yesterday to Crater Lake (more about that later), and we’re having a guest for Easter dinner tonight. Hopefully, I’ll get it done tomorrow. For now I need to get my link up for my 52/50 Project. Here are the contenders—Caleb again—but, sadly, this will be the last week as we’ll be headed home on Wednesday.

I loved this reflection of Caleb in the sliding glass door, watching his dad work on the patio.

And this week’s pick for 52/50 posted on Kent Weakley’s Project 52 post.

52/50: Week 9-Miss Skylar

The weeks are flying by, and once again it’s time to get my photo for my 52/50 project posted on Kent’s P52.

Matt’s home to visit and we had a great time this morning opening gifts and watching Skylar entertain us all! I didn’t have any photos I just loved from this week, but now I have more than enough. It was hard to delete any of them, but I tried to be a bit critical. Nonetheless, I ended up with over 30 photos that I decided to keep in Lightroom at least. Here are five favorites.

This was the first time Skylar’s been able to get on and off the rocking horse without any help. She always seems to like it.

I’m always happy to have a photo of Matt and Skylar together. I got several good ones today.

She was determined to get Matt’s birthday card open by herself.

Betsy says Skylar’s new love is stickers. She put her Dora stickers all over herself and the rest of us too. There’s a scrapbook layout coming!

But this is my favorite because it just captures perfectly her fun-loving attitude for just about everything! I’ll be posting this one at P52.
