A Sense of Place: Rochester Icons

  • by

I’m really enjoying Kat’s class “A Sense of Place.” We’ve completed three weeks now, and all of it has provided lots of food for thought. The first week was on preparation. The key question was “Do you travel to photograph?” or “Do you photograph while traveling?” I definitely do the latter, but often I do a lot of preparation and thinking about the images I’d like to capture on a trip. Other times it’s more, “Oh, look at that!” — a much more spontaneous process. She also asked us to think about how we travel with our cameras and equipment. Lots of times I travel only with my Canon S95. It fits into my purse, and takes awesome photographs. Other times, I want the advantage of my zoom lens or my 50mm 1.4 lens so I travel with the SLR. I’ve yet to find a camera bag I love, but through this process think I have found a solution. When we were in Washington, D.C. I used a backpack for my camera and my tabletop tripod. It was so much easier to carry, but I worried about the lack of padding around the camera. I’ve since ordered this bag from Photojojo which slips into the backpack easily, and adds very little weight. I’ll be giving this a try on our trip next week.

The second week of class focused on Aspects of Place and we created a list of the things we might photograph while trying to capture the essence of a place. It was a great exercise, and I’ve typed it up to keep with me.

This week was about capturing icons. Initially I wished I had seen this lesson before our trip to Washington, but once I read the lesson carefully, I discovered that I did use many of the ways to capture icons after all. (Those photos are coming, I promise.) The homework assignment for this week was to capture some icons of the place where you live. I had exactly one really nice day (though windy) in which to do the assignment, and I captured several of the ones on my list. I thought I’d share them here.

Kodakw

If there’s just one icon for Rochester (and I think there are several) this would probably be it. Rochester is known for Kodak and its founder, George Eastman. His home is another Rochester icon as is the beautiful Eastman Theater downtown. Sadly, Kodak has suffered a serious decline in recent years.

HighFallsw

HighFalls2w

Two views of High Falls. Rochester was originally known as The Flour City. Pioneers settled here on the Genesee River because of the falls and the water power they could provide.

Lilacsw

Now Rochester is known as The Flower City, and hosts an annual Lilac Festival that brings thousands of tourists every spring. Luckily, we live a short walk from Highland Park so we get to enjoy them before and after the festival. This year many are already blooming though the festival does not start until May 11. Our recent cold weather means there will still be lilacs blooming during the festival as well.

GeneseeBreweryw

Genesee Brewery has been producing brews for over 100 years. I love the colors in this photograph.

Bridge&Aquaductw

And, finally, a view of the Broad Street Bridge which was built over the original aqueduct which was built in 1840. The Genesee River is one of a few that flows north, in this case into Lake Ontario.

10 Things I’m Loving Right Now

  • by

I was totally unprepared for 10 Things this month. How did we get to the 10th of April so quickly? But then I realized how many things I’m enjoying right now so I thought I’d share them.

1. Planning for a weekend away in Washington, D. C. on Friday. We’re looking forward to meeting long-time friends we haven’t seen in years, doing some serious sightseeing, a bit of shopping, and going to see the Annie Leibowitz exhibit, “Pilgrimages” at the Smithsonian. I’m just about finished reading this book in hopes I’ll get some good photos. The last time we were there (22 years ago!), I took what I hoped would be some great photos, only to discover there was no film in my camera!

Book

2. Our weekly Face Time with Caleb. This week he was so much more focused on what he was seeing. I’m loving that we aren’t missing everything as he changes so quickly. Just one month from now, we’ll be in Oregon to spend some time with Sarah and Caleb while Adam is at a conference. Before Adam leaves, Caleb will be baptized. Then when he returns, Matt is flying out from Denver to meet Caleb and spend my birthday weekend with us. Can’t wait to get my hands on this cute baby, and have some serious family time!

Caleb4w

3. Betsy and Skylar have been coming to dinner every week recently. We just love having them here. Skylar’s old enough now to use a high chair, and can pick up the Gerber puffs and get them into her mouth.

4. Shortly after I purchased my Silhouette last year, I took an online course. It was very helpful, and I’ve been using it regularly. I subscribe to Kerri Bradford’s blog, and have purchased several of her Silhouette files, so when I saw that she was giving an introductory course for Jessica Sprague on the Silhouette, I signed right up. I’ve only been through the first two of five lessons, and have learned more in those than I learned in entire first course! Today I signed up for the Intermediate class which begins next week. Both classes are self-paced and you have forever access. I finished my March 365 layout today, and used a bit of what I’ve learned. Just learning the key commands has really speeded up my process.

5. I’ve also just started a photography class called “A Sense of Place” with Kat Sloma. I’ve know Kat for awhile through the internet, and since we’re planning a bit of travel this spring and summer I thought the timing was perfect. The first week’s lesson was about preparing to take photos, particularly when traveling. She made me rethink my camera bag and equipment. I’ll be testing out a new messenger-type bag this weekend which will hold my camera gear plus all the essentials I usually have in a purse. It’s a bit bigger, but carrying only one bag should be an improvement. It will hold everything I need for airline travel as well.

6. Before I signed on to the Silhouette class, I’d already signed up for a new online card class that begins next week with a wonderful line-up of teachers called “A Cut Above.” I use die cuts all the time, and know I’ll learn a few tricks here as well.

7. I belong to a local camera club, Camera Rochester, and attend a photo critique monthly at a photo gallery, Image City. Recently, a friend I met through these groups invited me to come to a Rochester Photo Editing Group. I’ve been learning a lot in the couple of months I’ve belonged. The organizer of the group sends regular, informative emails, and on Saturday I went to my first photo shoot with the group. The purpose is to shoot to edit, so I downloaded Photomatix, and created my first HDR image today with three images I took at Artisan Works. Because it’s a trial version, it has the Photomatix watermard on the image. Once I see what it can do, I may purchase the program. This photo was taken in the Frank Lloyd Wright room.

8. Spring. Well, it was here for a while, but there wasn’t much sign of it today. Nonetheless, this is the earliest spring we’ve seen in a long time. The magnolias have already peaked. Fortunately, we got to Highland Park before they started to deteriorate.

9. Finding Photo Flow and Lightroom. I finally finished the lessons in Finding Photo Flow. It was the best money I’ve spent on a class in a while, although for a time, I was pretty frustrated. I have now created a work flow that will meet my needs, and today I did some basic editing in Lightroom and was quite pleased with the results. The other realization is that despite good intentions, my photographs are NOT well organized. It’s going to take months to get everything in place, but once it’s there I think we’ll be good to go for many years.

10. OLW. My One Little Word for 2012 is Balance, and I’ve been struggling with trying to make time for all the things I love to do along with all of my commitments. The last couple of weeks have been much better. I’ve found time to create, have been doing lots of reading and learning (books and internet), spending time with friends, and keeping up with most of the blogs I want to read. I’ve been to the gym nearly every day, and have been enjoying lots of cooking and entertaining in the new kitchen. Life is good.

I’ll be linking to Shimelle’s Ten Things.

March-A Month of Photos

  • by

Month_in_photos_buttonWEB

I had my templates for Capture Your 365 and A Month in Photos done the first of April. I’ve been waiting to post them until I got the layouts done, but it’s just not happening. So here is my March Month of Photos template. I will be back with the layout of the photo-of-the-day which I’ve managed to stay on track with for three months now.

March2012_collagew

Some of my favorites from March: Skylar (I just love those chubby arms and bright eyes), my brother-in-law’s birthday party, Tracy’s birthday celebration at the Irish Harp in Niagara-on-the-Lake, high school rowers practicing on the Genesee River, a favorite photo from the orchid show, my self-portrait for the month (reflection in the doors at LLBean), and the beautiful magnolias in Highland Park (typically taken in late April or May!)

Take Twelve

TakeTwelve2012button150x150

Take Twelve done on the 12th—-very unusual. I’ve even printed the layout on legal sized paper and think I may make a one page layout with it. But perhaps, I’ll print each separately and do a two-page layout. I can’t decide so I’ll post the photos here for now. The template is one from Ella Publishing’s Take Twelve set.

TakeTwelveMarch2Pg.w

I love the two pages laid out together. But for better viewing here they are separately.

The journaling reads:  Maureen came to lunch today. It was her first chance to see our new kitchen. I made a favorite, baked chicken salad, and a new dessert: caramel crunch brownies which are fabulous. I’m still working on the Sunday crossword puzzle, and refilled my little cup with my favorite mechanical pencils. The clementines are sitting on our counter, reminding me to snack on fruit when I get hungry. It works most of the time.

The beautiful flowers were a gift from Maureen. After lunch I took some clothes to the tailors to be altered as well as a lovely article about the tailor’s daughter who is now a co-owner. New phone books arrived today. It’s always a dilemma to figure out what to do with them, since we use the tiny ones in the kitchen which are not updated. I had to ice my knee (bursitis) while we watched the evening news. This month I’m reading “The Marriage Plot,” as well as a book on Lightroom and some travel books on Washington, D.C. —-all on the iPad.

Like Capture Your 365+1, I’m happy to be keeping up with this project. It’s fun to record one day a month, something I know I wouldn’t do without this motivation.

Project 64: Red Orange and more LOAD

  • by

Project64

Last week’s color at Project 64 was Red Orange. It was much easier to find that Orchid, although I was delighted to find my one and only orchid photo as last week’s pick. The number of folks still posting has dwindled since the beginning of the New Year, but by my count there are only 8 weeks left, including this one. LIke L.O.A.D. I am somewhat amazed to find I have kept up with this project every week for 58 weeks!

Before we left on a road trip last spring, I made little cards for each color so I could carry them with me. I take each one out the day the new color is revealed, and lay it on my desk. One night I looked down and there was the card laying next to a file folder. Perfect match:

But the photo I’m linking up is this macro shot of one of the flowers in a beautiful bouquet I was given. It was a great excuse to get out the tripod and the macro lens again.

Flower2w

Today is the last day of February and my 29th layout is done (but not photographed). I’m relieved to be finished. It’s taken a lot of time, and I have other projects that need my attention. I’m getting a tutorial on Lightroom this afternoon which, hopefully, will clear up the difficulties I have getting my catalog organized. I’ve also started purging and cleaning in my studio (again), and want to clear out a lot of old stuff. My anniversary package from Papertrey arrived yesterday, and I’m anxious to get back to some card making. Nonetheless, L.O.A.D. fulfilled one 2012 goal:  get back to scrapbooking. Now my goal is one layout a week, which after one-a-day seems pretty reasonable. So here are three more:

LOAD_2.22Ordination

I’m pretty sure this is another Ali E. template, but I forgot to write it down. When we were in California in November, Adam was ordained as a Presbyterian minister. All the photos were taken by Ron Tripp, a member of the congregation Adam served in Livermore, and a wonderful photographer. The template took up so much room, I ended up making a circle embellishment from a tiny Basic Grey alpha with the title on it. The cross came from an Amy Tangerine alpha.

LOAD_2.23Shower

I made a scrapbook album for Sarah after her baby shower, but never scrapped any of the photos of all our wonderful friends and family who were there. Once again, no room for a title, so the photo of the cake will have to do. I hid the journaling behind the photo.

LOAD_2.24FirstFriends

This layout came from a prompt about neighborhood friends. The journaling reads:

Freddy Samples was one of my first friends, and one of two that I remember from my  years in Kansas.  There are several photos of us together, but I love this one in our cowboy/cowgirl outfits. Toy guns were definitely banned later in my childhood, so this outfit is amusing. I do see that Freddy has a toy gun in his hand, but I do not.

Cathy (I wish I could be sure of her last name) was a close friend later during my elementary school years. I loved to go to her house because her family had a television and mine did not. Despite the fact that we were friends for quite a few years, and I visited her in her new home in New Orleans when I was in fifth grade, I cannot find any photos of the two of us.

Project 64: Yellow & Simple As That

  • by

Project64

Yellow was the color for Project 64 last week, and there’s not a bit of yellow to be found outside right now. These pretty tulips are the photo I’m posting this week.

I’m also going to be posting this year at Simple As That for the Month of Photos. Rebecca generously provided this template which I love, and I picked seven of my favorite photos from January. It might even get a scrapbook page before L.O.A.D.  is over.

Project 64: Blue Green

Week-52-blue-green-WEB

Last week’s color at Project 64 was Blue Green. I found these mugs at the Breadboard in Ashland on Saturday morning. Just in time, as I hadn’t paid as much attention to this project as I usually do. This week the color is Brown. I shouldn’t have a problem with that!

Twelve on the Twelfth: Posted on the 18th

  • by

I’d like to use the excuse that I’m spending my time holding babies, cooking, and visiting, but the truth is I’ll probably always be posting this project a day or two or three later. Nonetheless, I’ve decided to give 12 on the 12th a try this year. When I get home, I’ll add this template to a scrapbook page.

TakeTwelveJanw
From top left to bottom right:  our room number at the Best Western, Sarah and Caleb, Grandpa and Caleb, Sadie (best dog ever!), the current book group book (very interesting; I’m getting a bit of it read here while Caleb sleeps in my arms), Sadie checking out Caleb in his car seat before we leave for the mall, Sarah and Caleb, Caleb in his stroller, Caleb’s mirror on the back of the car seat so Sarah can see him in the rearview mirror (we never had such products when she was a baby!), the mall sign, my Photo365 app, and turkey chili for dinner.

I think I’ll try to always have a shot of our dinner and the book I’m currently reading. Beyond that, who knows? It was no problem getting 12 photos here in Oregon. I think it might be more challenging once we get home. Our time here is more than half up; we have just five full days left. It’s not going to be easy to leave!

Project 64: Wild Strawberry

  • by

Last week’s color at Project 64 was “Wild Strawberry.” Not a color you’d find in my house or my closet, and certainly not outside in January in Rochester. So before we left for Oregon, I visited Skylar’s closet and nursery and had no trouble coming up with the right shade of pink.

Uggsw

Baby Uggs waiting for Skylar to grow into them.

Mobilew

The crib mobile

Bibw

And a cute little bib that came on a sleeper with little pink and green whales all over it. Betsy sent Caleb the same ensemble in blue and green.

I’ll be back later with photos from Oregon as well as some cards I finished before I left.

Project 64: Silver

  • by

What a perfect color choice for the holidays! I had several shots I wanted to take, but only had time for one. I may yet do the others, but it’s time to post at Project 64 for last week’s color. I bought these bells at Michaels for just two dollars and they look fabulous in a silver bowl we were given as a wedding gift many years ago.

Bowl1w
I like this view even better, and will be linking this one to Project 64.

Bowl2w

I’m hoping to have some creative time tomorrow, so I may have a JYC post ready, but in case I don’t get back here until after Christmas, have a fabulous holiday!

Project 64: Mahogany

  • by

I thought last week’s color at Project 64 would be more difficult, but when I went to look I found a lot right in my studio and in our front hall. My desk is definitely mahogany, but it wouldn’t make for a very artistic photo right at the moment. I found this jar (check the lid) sitting on my shelf with two balls of twine (not mahogany by any means).

Jar&Twinew

In our front hall, I found these. I’m linking the last one to Project 64.

Candlestickw

Mirrorw

DrawerPullw

This beautiful, small dresser belonged to my great-aunt, and has lovely inlaid drawers. We keep our dining room linens in it, but it sits in our front hall below the mirror you see above. The candlestick sits on top of the dresser.

My brother is coming for the weekend. I haven’t seen him since September, and it’s been 2 1/2 years since he’s been here to visit. I think he wants to tour some Finger Lake wineries tomorrow, and then we’re taking him to one of our favorite restaurants to celebrate his birthday which was two weeks ago.

Project 64: Orange

  • by

We’re home although it took a little longer than we expected. Our flight from Chicago to Rochester was cancelled so we spent the night in Chicago and arrived here early Wednesday afternoon. Since we’ve been home, we’ve unpacked, bought and decorated our tree, finished decorating the house for Christmas, entertained our book group, and settled the kitchen which is finally done except for the blinds on the new windows. This weekend is free, so I’m hoping to get a start on Journal Your Christmas and projects for the Scrap-Mart blog which starts Monday. You won’t want to miss it! I’ll be posting more about it later today so check back for a list of the manufacturers who are participating this year, and giving away fabulous prizes.

Orange came along at just the right season at Project 64. I had some trouble with Purple Mountain Majesty, our last color, but orange was not hard to find.

Project 64: Purple Mountain Majesty

  • by

Project64

This week’s color at Project 64 was Purple Mountain Majesty. I was always lucky enough to have a big box of crayons when I was growing up, but I’m quite sure there was not any crayon with such an elegant name back then. Purple has been a favorite color of mine recently, and there are many shades and hues of it. The first item that caught my eye this week was my iPhone cover.

IPhoneCase

I’ve also purchased a striped turtleneck and vest this fall, but neither were quite the right purple. My new coat, however, and scarf that I purchased a year ago in California are quite right, and I’ll be linking this photo over at Project 64.

Coat:scarf

I must say that it’s a bit harder to find colors now that nature’s colors are much fewer and much less bright! I looked for Purple Mountain Majesty on all our walks last week, but there was nothing purple left in anyone’s gardens. This week’s color is orange, and it’s a bit easier to find!

Project 64: Dandelion and More iPhone Fun

  • by

Project64

This week’s color at Project 64 has been dandelion. I was pretty amazed to find dandelions still blooming as we walked to our polling place to vote yesterday. All four of these photos were taken with the iPhone (we keep track of our walks on an app called Runkeeper so I always have my iPhone with me), and for the first time, I edited them on the iPhone as well with an app called Photogene. It was pretty easy, and then I used an app called Frame It that Adam told me about to gather them into a collage. The VW was in the shadows so I used an app I downloaded for free this morning called Camera Flash which lightened it right up. I find these apps so amazing. For some reason I’ve felt rather intimidated by the thought of editing a photo on the phone itself. Should have been trying this a long time ago!

DandelionCollage

This is the photo I’m posting at Project 64, taken with the Hipstamatic app at a cute little deli in Mt. Morris where we had a yummy lunch last week. The colors were so cheerful!

Project 64: Turquoises

  • by

Project64

Turquoise was the color at Project 64 last week. I got the photos taken, but editing them was another matter. I’m getting this posted just under the wire—only a few hours left! I’ve been super busy with lots of projects, and lots of cleaning. The kitchen should be finished by the end of this coming week, and I’ve started cleaning up after all the construction workers. The electricians caused the biggest mess, but the new wiring was badly needed. Everything in one area of the basement was covered with measurable dust. I have lots of things to post, but haven’t had time to edit any photos. Hopefully this week will be a little better.

So here are my captures for turquoise. First my nail technician. As soon as I saw her outfit, I knew I needed her photo, and she was glad to oblige.

Lindaw
The next two photos are from a diner where Tracy and I had breakfast on Wednesday after an early morning shopping excursion to pick up some new speakers. When Matt left in May, he took his speakers with him, and we’ve been without ever since. Our favorite, local, store had an invitation only sale, and we took advantage of it. The neon lights were perfect, and I’m submitting the second one to Project 64.

All three photos this week were taken with my iPhone.
