Project Life: October 2014

  • by

October saw us on the road again, off on the postponed July trip to Petoskey, MI and Door County, WI. A friend of mine lives in Milwaukee and vacations regularly in Door Co. and a friend of Tracy’s made a winter trip to Petoskey and we were intrigued. Of course, we ended up in Wilmette for some time with Sarah, Adam, and Caleb.

OctTitle2page

OctTitle

I finished September’s layouts with a Design G page so went with a smaller title card: Papertrey’s Monthly Moments die cut, some stamps from the July Monthly Moments set, and a piece of Washi tape on a Becky Higgins’ Midnight card. The photos (clockwise) from top left are Petoskey; my friend, Nancy and her friend, Mary; the lighthouse at Muskegon, MI; Peninsula Park in Door County; and a dramatic sunset after a cold, windy, rainy day in Petoskey. (The photos look a bit out of focus here, but it’s the photo of the pages causing the problem.)

Octpage2

I scanned two pages from my travel sketchbook to show our itinerary, my favorite photos of Caleb at the garden center and Kohl’s Children’s Museum, and ended up with two photos from our stop on our way home to meet our friends, Karen and Mike, for our annual weekend in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Halloween2Pages

Halloween

I had fun creating the cards for the Halloween spread. I used an OLD piece of Scenic Route patterned paper for the title card with some equally old Doodlebug border stickers, and a stamp from Monthly Moments on a Keep it Simple Frame die cut. I die cut the Journal Card #5 from a piece of patterned paper from the Lawn Fawn “Beachside” paper pad and layered it over a contrasting piece from the same set. The cute little owl is by Doodlebug that I picked it up recently in a lovely little store near Sarah’s.

Caleb tried on his Halloween costume which I made for Matt when he was little. The only alteration needed was to hem the pants. He practiced his roars for us, as well. When Halloween actually arrived it was cold with hail. After three houses, he announced he was ready to go home. Candy was definitely not worth slogging through the terrible weather. When I asked on Face Time about trick or treating next year, he said, “NEVER!” We’ll see.

It wasn’t great here, but not quite so bad. No surprise, Skylar was Elsa from Frozen, and had a better time than Caleb. The pumpkins are Matt’s creation; every year he gets a little more creative with them.

The second page of the layout is just photos from the trip. Door County is known for it’s lighthouses as it extends into both Green Bay and Lake Michigan. We visited several of them. Here are a few more photos I added at the end of the month’s pages.

Photos2pages

Although it’s hard to read, the third photo on the left-hand page is of the plaque at the 45th Parallel which we crossed twice on this trip. It marks the theoretical half-way point between the North Pole and the equator. The hot dog on the right-hand page is a Chicago Dog–which I actually had in Petoskey, MI. It turned out to be the best one I’ve ever had. (I’ve eaten three of these calorie-laden dogs now, and I’m quite sure there are more in my future.)

Today is International Scrapbooking Day, and with some time off to go to spinning class, and walk down to Matt’s to get our bikes out of his garage, I expect to be working on Project Life. It’s May, and I didn’t quite meet my goal of getting caught up. I did, however, finish all the pages for 2014, so there’ll be more spreads to share soon.

Project Life: September 2014

  • by

Although we made our annual weekend trip to the Adirondacks, the big event in September was Skylar’s third birthday. I had a lot of fun embellishing the birthday pages, using stamps and die cuts from my card making supplies.

SeptTitlepage

I added a die cut and a stamp from the Monthly Moments set by Papertrey Ink to a photo this month. I like it a lot. The other noteworthy event from the month was going to our first Food Truck Rodeo at the Public Market. I don’t know how we missed these all summer. This was the last one, and it was a lot of fun. There were probably 20-30 food trucks set up around the perimeter of the Public Market downtown. The choices were amazing—wings, Thai, Chinese, barbecue, sandwiches, Cuban . . . We finally decided on comfort food: mac and cheese because we’d heard so much about Mac’Rollin. It was a bit of a wait in line, but worth it. There’s live music, too, and the crowd was as diverse as the food offerings.

FoodTruckCard

I found the digital stamp by Katie Pertiet to create this filler card for the Food Truck Rodeo.

BD2Page

BDpageR

I recently purchased two Market Kits from Papertrey Ink: Party Pops and Clipsters. Both came in handy. The candles and banner on the title card (from the Midnight edition of Project Life) came from the Party Pops kit. I wanted to document the transformation of the swing set from a pile of boards to the completed, and truly enjoyed, final product. And I scanned both sides of the invitation to include in the layout.

BDpage2

The photo of Skylar before the party is one of my favorites from the whole year. By the time the party was over, she’d had enough of photos, but I loved this one of Matt and Betsy, even if Skylar is hiding.

BDCard

This card gave me a chance to include one more photo of the birthday girl and play with my new goodies. The same banner from the previous page, and one of the Clipster clips.

I’ve taken a couple of days break from Project Life, but am four months down, and five to go. That’s pushing it to be done by the end of the month, but I haven’t given up!

Project Life: August 2014

  • by

I’ve continued to make good progress on catching up with Project Life; not quite as good on getting the pages photographed for the blog. August found Sarah and Caleb still here; Adam joined them a few days later when he returned from his mission trip. All three stayed through the rest of the week and we spend most afternoons and early evenings with Tracy’s family for the annual vacation at Conesus Lake.

Aug2page

Again, I kept it pretty simple with the Simple White photo templates, a couple Tiny Templates (#4) from Cathy Zielski, and a wooden veneer from my stash. The patterned paper for the title card is from a paper pad “Print Shop” by Studio Calico, the camera sticker is from a collection by Simple Stories, and die cuts from Papertrey Ink.

AugTitle

I seem to have a fondness for photos of Caleb walking away from us. This is another fave.

AugPage2

Those of you familiar with Rinda’s Summer Scavenger Hunt will remember this photo of Tracy’s family creating a parade for me. It ended up being one of my favorite photos from the summer.

AugPge3

The last page documents our excursion to the Strong Museum of Play in downtown Rochester. An awesome place, and there will be more photos from here later in the year. At the end of August I helped organize a picnic for the Urban Presbyterians Together, a group dedicated to supporting the ten urban churches in our Prebytery as well as incredible efforts to improve the City Schools.

Project Life: June 2014

  • by

There won’t be any scrapbooking done in March since we’ll be away more than we’re home. Once we get settled in again, Project Life needs to rise up to the top of the priority list. June was a pretty quick month to put together. It only needed two pages.

June2Page

Sarah and Caleb left at the beginning of the month after being here for Matt and Betsy’s wedding reception. I love the photo of Caleb pulling his suitcase down our front sidewalk. It’s always so poignant when he leaves!

JunePage1

A week later, I left to go to Detroit for the Presbyterian, USA General Assembly. Our head of staff was standing for moderator. Sadly (for the Presbyterian Church, and for John) the election did not go his way, but I learned a lot about how the larger church functions, and enjoyed my time in Detroit with my church friends.

JunePage2

Abi asked on a recent blog post, if her readers really felt like adults, or did we still feel like kids. I’m so far into adulthood, that I guess it’s a moot question. Nonetheless, I really did feel like there was a shift when Matt and Betsy asked us to their house to celebrate Father’s Day. I love to entertain, but it was so nice to be asked to celebrate with them. And I just adore the photo of Matt and Skylar. I don’t know what the topic of conversation was, but it’s clear they both were taking it seriously.

June marks the month of the beginning of Farmer’s Markets in the area. Before then there isn’t enough local produce to warrant the market. We make weekly trips to our local Brighton Farmer’s Market, and almost always, make a trip to the Ithaca Farmer’s Market some time in June. Taking photos at the market is one of my favorite things to do.

When this post goes live, we’ll be on our way home from Florida. It’s been in the high 70’s and low 80’s the whole two weeks on Longboat Key. Rochester’s temps are still varying widely from the 30’s to the 50’s. Matt says the snow has melted off our roof, but not from the yard. It’s going to be an adjustment!

There’s a great quote that a friend and I keep reminding one another of:  “You can do anything, but you can’t do everything.” And it’s so true. Nonetheless, there are SO many things I want to learn, and I keep adding projects and even new hobbies to the list. This summer I decided it was finally time to bite the bullet and try to learn how to draw. It’s something I’ve always wanted to know how to do, but I had no art instruction growing up, and therefore, little to no experience. There’ll be more about this in a later post, but sketching and online sketching classes have consumed a lot of my time since July. All this to say, that I’m very behind in creating my Project Life pages. Like 8 months behind. Fortunately, I keep a daily journal, and my photos are pretty well-organized in Lightroom, so it’s not hard to recap the month. Just time consuming.

May was particularly time consuming, since I had over 100 hundred printed photos from Matt and Betsy’s wedding reception held on Memorial Day weekend. I ended up cropping some of the 4X6 photos to fit in the 4X3 windows which actually improved several of them. So here’s a long, photo-heavy post with the May Project Life pages.

ClassJournaling

The photo of our church in the page above was the HDR project, and it came out great. I should have printed it on better paper for the album, but everything else was being printed on Epson Premier Presentation Matte paper. It’s so much less expensive that the pearl photo paper I love from both Ilford and Canon, and usually works out just fine for Project Life. This was a fantastic class, and I learned a lot!

MayPg3

The photos with Betsy’s mom are so poignant. Sally felt good the day of the reception, and little did any of us know that within a month and a half, she’d be gone.

MattBetsyClose

One advantage, I suppose, of falling behind is finding some new product that works out perfectly. I recently picked up a pack of Heidi Swapp overlays that I just love on this page.

MayPg4

Invition

I scanned and resized the invitation so I could include it.

MayPg5

WeekendJournaling

The cute typewriter on this card was a brush from a One Little Bird digital kit. The rest of the pages are just photo pages added to the back of the May spreads.

May Pg6

MayPg7

MayPg8

That spread finished my first Project Life album. I started the project in August 2013, and the album ends with May 2014. I have no problem with that which surprises the obsessive-compulsive streak in me to be orderly.

I’m hoping to get a good start on June today. We are truly snowed in. The big blizzard that’s crossing the country appeared to be going south of us, but turned north, and we’ve been getting steady snow for hours now. It’s beautiful, but like many people, I cancelled the appointment I had for this afternoon. All the schools are closed, and I’m guessing we have at least a foot of snow already–no end in sight. Maybe scrapping spring/summer photos will cheer me up!

April Project Life

  • by

April, you say? That was awhile ago. Indeed it was, but it’s been pretty easy to create the Project Life spreads thanks to my daily journal and a well-organized set of photos in Lightroom. I keep reading that one is not to worry about being behind, and actually I’m not as anxious about it as I used to be. In fact, I just got the photos from Betsy and Matt’s reception in May so I couldn’t have done those before now anyway!

April was a busy month. We were in Chicago to help take care of Caleb while Sarah was in California, celebrated with them on Palm Sunday and got home in time for Easter here with Matt, Betsy, and Skylar.

First2pagespread

FamilyDinner

The first page documents one of the almost weekly dinners we enjoy with Matt, Betsy, and Skylar. Skylar discovered my tape dispenser and had the best time pulling off lengths of tape and applying them to everything and everyone. The little camera on the card with Matt and Betsy’s photo is an Amy Tangerine stamp by American Craft colored in with a Copic marker.

I love the Monthly Moments products from Papertrey Ink. I used the April Monthly Moments dies and stamps as well as some images from “A Few Pointers” to create the title card for April. The patterned paer is from “Kraft in Color” by Doodlebug Design. The Month in Review card above is a Cathy Zielske digital card.

Close-upTitleCard

Skylar loves my old Kodak Holiday camera and pretends to take photos almost every time she’s here. This is one of my favorite photos from April.

Close-upClick

The word art is from Kitty Designs, “Storyteller.”

Wilmette

This page documents some of the fun things we did with Sarah, Caleb, and Adam while we were in Wilmette. The Palm Sunday card was created from the image on the Palm Sunday bulletin at the Winnetka Presbyterian Church where Adam serves as Associate Pastor. I love the lower left photo pair of Caleb in a hobby shop. We stopped there so Tracy could look at the model train products. The minute we walked in, Caleb spied a Duplo set with his absolute favorite cars from the Disney movie. Once we told him he could have it, he never let go of it except to give it to the cashier! It’s still a big hit.

SecondTwoPageSpread

Museum

We spent a wonderful morning at The Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. Caleb loved The Idea Factory and would have been content to spend the whole morning there. We knew, however, that there was a wonderful model train display upstairs which we all found fascinating. If you look carefully at the photo in the lower left corner, you will see a full-sized airliner hovering over the city of Chicago. It’s an amazing set-up!

This journaling card is one from the Project Life Midnight Edition. I stamped the words with the Papertrey Ink’s “Wet Paint II” set and used a sticker from a Simple Stories sheet.

Easter

We were home in time for Easter Sunday. After church we joined Matt, Betsy, and Skylar for an Easter egg hunt in their backyard, and then joined Tracy’s family in Honeoye for the annual Easter dinner. For once it was warm enough to sit outside. The cute Easter Bunny card is from Papertrey Ink, and although you can’t see it in the photo, I added some glitter to the eggs. Once again almost all the photos this month were popped into one of Tracy Larsen’s Simply White photo templates.

Although I enjoy creating a few cards for the Project Life spreads, I’m happy with letting the photos and journaling tell most of the story. We are so fortunate to be able to spend so much time with family, and I’m very glad I’ve figured out a way to get a record of it into my scrapbooks.

It’s (Inter)national Scrapbook Day

  • by

I was up early and thought by now I’d have multiple Project Life pages to share, but it’s been one of those days where other projects have taken far longer than I anticipated. The day’s not over, but we have a play at Geva Theater at 4:00 followed by a trip to BJ’s to pick up some groceries. Hopefully, I’ll get a start on a few more pages before bedtime.

At any rate, I did finish the February Project Life pages earlier this week . There are just two spreads for February, and only one of them shows any snow! That’s because the best of the photos came from our brief trip to Florida, and the rest were taken inside. When I finished it seemed odd to have such bright and cheery photos for a typically gray and cold month.

FebPL1

I purchased Tracy Larsen’s Simply White templates a month or so ago, and was delighted to find how easy they are to use. I like the clean, white look of the page using them. I also discovered Epson’s Premium Presentation Paper recently. I have a wonderful (but old) Canon printer, but the Epson paper worked beautifully to print the photos as well as the journaling card (Cathy Zielske). It’s a nice weight, and much less expensive that the Canon Luster or Ilford Pearl photo paper I typically use. The journaling card is from the February Cocoa Daisy “Day in the Life” kit.

PLHelloFeb

The title card was created with Papertrey’s “Monthly Moments” and “Slide Frame” dies, the Winnie and Walter “The Big, The Bold, and The Happy” stamp, and the Mini Heart Collection die from Memory Box.

PLFeb2

More Simply White templates, and a journaling card from Cocoa Daisy.  I made a pocket for our Beach and Towel card from the Jupiter Resort with a piece of patterned paper from Simple Stories. I forgot to print a caption for the photos from the George Eastman House, so printed on an piece of transparency and added it to the top of the photos with two tiny pearls. I used a new Papertrey Ink die, “Simply Framed” to create the pocket card “you and me.”

PLYou&me

You can see the subtle grid stamping on the bottom of the card. I layered three of the outer frame, so the card is slightly recessed. The banner die is from the “Count Down” die, and the sentiment from “A Few Pointers.” I won another generous gift certificate during the April Papertrey Release party and used it to purchase several of their stamp and die sets meant for pocket scrapbooking. I know I’m going to enjoy them, and have some card ideas percolating as well. The little hearts were left over from the die used on the title card.

PLPicturePerfect

This was one of my favorite beach photos. The colors of the sea and sky that day were just wonderful. The day we were at Jupiter Beach it was incredibly windy and the colors were much more muted. The caption was stamped with an older Lawn Fawn set by the same name.

You may remember that our reason for the February trip was to see Tracy’s stepmother who had been diagnosed with early onset dementia. On a happy note, we heard yesterday that Betty is doing much better. They changed her medication, and her memory and ability to function relatively independently have returned manyfold. She’s in a new assisted living facility and doing really well! We needed some good news around here.

Happy Scrapbooking!

January Project Life

  • by

It’s the middle of March, and I’ve finally completed my Project Life pages for January. I’d think I was way behind, but I follow a couple of people who are still working on last fall’s pages, so I guess it’s not too bad.

JanPg1

The first page backs up the Title page for 2014 which I posted here. It documents our last day with Sarah, Adam, and Caleb, our arduous ride home from Chicago as well as the start of our next road trip, just two days after we got home. The cute cork calendar is from Lawn Fawn, and is part of a two piece set. I’m saving the frame for another spot. I cut down a 3X4 card from the Project Life Travel set, added some Simple Stories letter stickers and a car from an Evalicious sticker set. The map was fussy cut from another journaling card, and I added two black pearls for the starting point and ending point of our road trip.

MapClose

I ended up using some different page protectors for the last four pages:  Design G by Becky Higgins. They’re about an inch narrower than the 12X12 pages, but since I’ve been combining different size pages in my albums for several years now, it doesn’t bother me at all.

  MuseumPageJan

The top two photographs would have made a great Zoom In, Zoom Out post, and may show up there some week when I don’t have anything new to share. The journaling tells the story about the two museums we visited and the other stops we made as we drove to Florida.

Ft.MeyersBeachJan

I love photographing the beach, and these were some of my favorites from this trip. The one of the sun set was taken out the window of the condo Tracy’s mom rents in Fort Myer’s Beach. The two fishermen at #11 of my 100 Strangers Project (more about that later.)

SideTripsJan

We took a couple side trips to the Everglades and the Thomas Edison Museum and winter estate with Ellie while we were in Florida, and ate out at some great restaurants both on the road and while we were staying with her. I found the fork and spoon charms when I cleaned out the studio in January and added the “YUM” with die cuts from Papertrey. The pocket is from Simple Stories. The arrow on the bottom photo is a Technique Tuesday stamp designed by Ali Edwards.

HomeJan

And then we were home, and the warm temperatures were no more. The “Frosty” wood veneer came in a kit (not sure which one), and I included one of my favorite photographs from the Frugal Still Life class. I wanted to put a label of some kind on it, but couldn’t find anything that didn’t detract from the composition of the photo. The “Hello Home” card was from the December Cocoa Daisy Project Life kit. Tracy gave me a three month subscription to these for Christmas. The cute journaling card with the books is from the January kit, and I stamped the date with the new Slide Frame set from Papertrey Ink. The rest of the page documents my progress with my One Little Word which I intend to do each month at the end of my spread.

JournalingPurgeJan

Now to get February done before March ends.

Happy Birthday, Matt! and December Project Life Finale

  • by

Today is Matt’s 31st birthday. I’m not quite sure where 31 years have gone—passed by very quickly! I’m having lunch with him today, and we’re celebrating with him, Betsy and Skylar at his favorite restaurant tomorrow night.  I’m so grateful to have them just around the corner.

For his birthday card, I pulled out a new cover plate die from Papertrey Ink. The die is meant to be horizontal on a portrait card, but I wanted to use it horizontally. It was easy to cut it down for a 4-bar card, and I was really pleased with how it came out.

MattBD

I die cut the cover plate first in Soft Stone cardstock, then four more times in Vintage Cream, Fine Linen, Classic Kraft and Smoky Shadow to inlay the stripes. I saved all the extras and I’m sure I’ll come up with some way to use them. The stars were cut with the Large Holiday Shapes die from Simon Says-it’s getting to be a real favorite. A couple of AMuse pearls finished it off. It may be a bit strange to submit a masculine card to a challenge on pearls, but it fits Simon Says’ Wednesday challenge: Anything Goes with Pearls.

We’ve come to the end of the December Project Life pages. It’s unlikely I’ll have another month as full as this one for many months to come. Rest assured today’s post is much shorter.

The day after Christmas we left for Chicago. We drove as far as Port Huron, Michigan the first day, and arrived in Chicago at Sarah and Adam’s on the 27th. We celebrated Christmas with them that afternoon.

DecPg12

Every year the Hess gasoline company comes out with a different truck at Christmas time. Tracy couldn’t wait to get one for Caleb, and its battery-operated lights and power were a huge hit with Caleb. The next day we took off for the Chicago Botanic Gardens to see the Wonderland Express. We’d been to the Model Railroad Garden in September, but for the holiday they move the trains inside and decorate for Christmas. It’s much harder to take good photos as it’s much more crowded. In fact, you get timed tickets for the event. I included one of the tickets with some Washi tape as a border.

DecWonderlandExpress

You can tell by the looks on Caleb’s face and his Grandfather’s face that the crowds did not diminish their enjoyment! We were lucky enough to be there for an ice carving event as well. The last photo shows Caleb helping to put away the Christmas decorations. Caleb turned two on December 30th and Sarah was determined to put Christmas away before we celebrated his birthday.

DecCalebBirthday

This might be one of the busiest PL pages I’ve ever made. The title page was created with a Simple Stories journaling card, some stamps and die cuts from Papertrey Ink and two candle stickers from Michaels. The banner on the photo below it was also a die cut I found in my stash, stamped with a sentiment from a Papertrey Ink set. Caleb woke up to a huge banner Adam made and hung on the stairs for his birthday. The biggest hit of the birthday presents was a garage Sarah and I found at Pottery Barn Kids for 50% off the day before Caleb’s birthday. It’s provided hours of enjoyment since.

In some ways, I prefer the stand-alone Christmas Journal, but I know I can’t do that and Project Life. Since this format works so well for the rest of the year, I’ll probably continue to document our December journeys in the Project Life album and forgo the Christmas Journal. I admit to mixed feelings about it, but the continuity is more important to me in the end.

December Project Life 2

Matt and Betsy’s wedding was certainly the highlight of the month. I still haven’t seen all the photos from the professional photographer, so these are ones I took with the exception of the family photo which Betsy and Matt gave us for Christmas.

DecWeddingDouble

DecWeddingLeft

I found the piece of wedding paper in a box with all the photos from Sarah and Adam’s wedding. I made an album for them, but haven’t made ours yet! They’ll be celebrating eight years of marriage in May. I think I’d better put that at the top of projects to finish once I finish my purging project. The “Happy Day” banner was cut from vellum and stamped with a sentiment from Papertrey’s “Sentiment Signs” set.

DecWeddingRight

The Project Life cards on this page come from Simple Stories as well as two digital cards from Pixels and Company. The die cut holly is from Papertrey Ink, and I used it on some earlier pages as well.

DecWedding3

I used a glittery snowflake sticker from Michaels on the photo I took from inside while Betsy and Matt had photos taken during the snowstorm outside. I die cut the arrow from Papertrey’s “Get to the Point” dies and the little red metallic hearts strewn throughout all these pages are from Simon Says die “Holiday Shapes.”

DecWedding3Close

DecPg9

My photos from our Christmas gift exchange with Matt, Betsy, and Skylar weren’t very good so I didn’t have a lot to choose from. I used a digital template but I have no documentation to tell me who created it. A long time ago, I filed a lot of templates into folders by the number of photos they held, but some of them didn’t carry the copyright info with them. The background paper is from a fabulous Cosmo Cricket pad called “Simple Surfaces.”

DecChristmasDayDouble

Since I had a 12X12 layout on the previous page, I used another digital template from Keri Bradford for some of the photos from the Walker family Christmas. The title was cut on the Silhouette.

DecChristmasLeft

I’ve seen lots of the clear shaker cards on the internet and wanted to give one a try. I used a pretty Washi tape to seal the edges. The PL card is a cut file for the Silhouette by Paislee Press, and the photo collages are templates by Ali Edwards.

ChristmasRight

More photo templates by Ali Edwards. These are really a lifesaver when you have a lot of photos you want to include on one page.

ChristmasRightJournaling

The lovely cut file “joy” is from Paislee Press, and I found both metallic papers at Michaels. They are really beautiful in real life!

But our Christmas wasn’t over yet, as we left the next day for Chicago. I’ll be back to share those pages tomorrow.

December Project Life 1

  • by

I’ve been plugging away at my December Project Life pages since we returned in the middle of January. I finished them about a week ago, but getting the photos taken and resized has taken me awhile as well. With two trips to Chicago, a wedding, a birthday, and three Christmas celebrations, there was a lot to document. I ended up with fourteen pages so I’ll be spreading them across a couple of blog posts. There were just too many this month to take all the photos and cards out of the pockets to photograph, but I did my best to avoid as much glare as possible.

DecPg1

This year I didn’t do a Christmas Journal, but decided to put those pages into the Project Life album. I die cut the gold numbers with my Silhouette as well as the Hello, December. Along with gold, I embellished many of the cards with my Wink of Stella glitter pen, but it doesn’t show up very well in the photos. I also used some Cathy Zielski “Tiny Templates” on this page. Nearly every year in my Christmas Journal, I document new ornament purchases, and some of the decorations around the house. I wanted to be sure to document Miriam’s ornament exchange as well.

DecPg1Detail

Here you can catch a glimpse of the glitter pen on the elf’s hat, and the beautiful metallic paper for the title.

DecPg2_2

Every year I create a set of photo calendars with a template from Paislee Press to give to friends and family, and I always like to take photos of the Christmas decorations around town. The last two photos are of Caleb and his Polar Express train that Grandpa sent to go around his Christmas tree. It was a HUGE hit! The photo template on this page is from Ali Edwards.

DecVisitingSanta

I recently found these Becky Higgins pocket pages at Michaels. They are a bit smaller and just perfect for documenting Caleb’s trip to visit Santa while I was in Chicago the first week in December.

DecPage4

The back side of that page documents traveling during the holidays (and my extra day in Chicago thanks to a cancelled flight), as well as my love for wrapping and decorating packages. For the first time ever, I actually had the time to use my Pinterest boards for some inspiration in the packaging department.

DecPg5

Although I made about 25 Christmas cards this year, most of our friends and family got a photo card. I didn’t expect us to all be together again in December so when Sarah and her family were here in August I scheduled a family portrait. It’s not the greatest, but with two toddlers the photographer did a great job of getting us in and out of the studio quickly before either one lost interest. I always save the postage from the international cards I get. I love to see the variety and this year there were several very lovely ones of the Madonna and child.

The next several pages document the wedding, so I’ll save those for the next post!

Watching the snow . . .

  • by

I was just sitting at the computer and looked over to see the snow falling and blowing once again. A winter storm watch has been in effect since last night at 10:00. It wasn’t too bad early this morning when I ventured out to an ENT appointment, but by noon when I met a friend for lunch the driving had gotten pretty dicey. I’m glad to say I’m home with no intentions of going out again until at least noon tomorrow. Depending on how long this lasts, it may be longer!

I wasn’t able to catch the blowing snow (so much more dramatic) from my studio window, but I did decide that the scene made an appropriate Zoom In, Zoom Out subject for Helena’s meme.

ZIZO6_blog

Ali Edwards Photo template

I’ve spent quite a bit of time this week working on my December Project Life layouts. Given our schedule this year, it’s turning out to be quite a few pages! I thought I ought to get the November ones posted (they’ve been done except for the journaling for ever so long), before I start sharing the December ones. I must say it’s a joy to work in a cleaned-out, well-organized studio. All that hard work really paid off.

NovPg1

I used the same Ali Edwards photo template on this layout as the Zoom In, Zoom Out to show the extremes in weather we had in November. The circles at the top of the title were stamped with a Pink Paislee “Sentiment Series.” I inked the wood veneer leaves directly on the stamp pad.

NovJournaling

Page two documents Thanksgiving. The two top pockets on the right-hand side were originally one large photo collage that I cut apart. I’m not sure who created the collage. A long time ago I separated a lot of my digital photo templates into folders by the number of photos they hold. It works well except not all of them have the designer information still attached to them.

NovPg2

The digital stamp on the bottom left photo is from Paislee Press, and the photo template with the pictures of Skylar is on of Cathy Zielske’s “Labeled Photo” sets.

Hope to be back tomorrow with this week’s Frugal Still Life.

My goal is to complete the month’s pages for Project Life by the end of the following month, and I managed to get these done before the calendar turned to December. But not edited nor posted. After all these years, you’d think I’d know that all the holiday preparation takes longer than you anticipate. I’m off to visit Sarah, Adam, and Caleb tomorrow evening for a long weekend, and can’t wait to put my arms around all of them. Being away, however, means the to-do list for the holidays is a bit longer than usual right now. Today I have nothing on the calendar except a needed trip to the gym, so I’m finally able to post these pages, and perhaps get a start on November’s pages. I’m planning to do my Christmas Journal in my Project Life album this year, and I’m already working on that bit by bit.

I tried a new technique to photograph these pages, lining up the photos and cards on top of the page protectors. It definitely takes care of the glare, but I see now that not everything was lined up as perfectly as I would have liked.

October was a full month with trips to Niagara-on-the-Lake with our friends, Karen and Mike as well as the extended road trip to Florida for Rachel and Juan’s wedding.

It was truly a blessing this year to have a weekend with Karen and Mike. Although quite a bit thinner, Mike continues to do exceptionally well. There are a few side effects left from the multiple surgeries and attachments to life-saving machinery, but he is doing great. I used a Katie Pertiet digital quote on the photo of Karen and Mike, stained a Studio Calico wood veneer piece, and added some word stickers to some of the cards and photos.

On our way to Florida we spent one night in Savannah, GA, visited Tybee Island (not much there to recommend other than the beach and a lovely lighthouse), and had dinner at a fabulous restaurant on the saltwater flats. Our destination was the Boca Raton Resort where Rachel and Juan had arranged a wonderful package for the wedding guests. I put one of my favorite Instagram photos on a 4X6 template, added a banner with a tiny staple, and some more wood veneer. Taking a cue from Melissa who does such a great job of incorporating memorabilia into her layouts, I made a pocket card to hold business cards from some of the restaurants we ate in while traveling.

I cut apart a map we picked up to make the title card for this page, and used some A Muse pearls to mark the places we visited in Florida.

The wedding, of course, was the highlight of the trip. I only had my iPhone with me for the reception, but captured a good photo of the bride and groom, the maid of honor (Rachel’s sister, Sarah), and our friend, Lindsey and her family. Lindsey is a Presbyterian minister and a church friend of both Rachel and Sarah. She delivered a wonderful homily at the wedding.  I kept the elegant door key from the resort and included a few photos from it as well. Instead of doing a journaling card, I cut the cover from the wedding program, and tied a thin silver thread around it. (The photos, fortunately, are much sharper IRL than they appear here.)

On Monday after the wedding, we spent the morning taking an architectural tour of the Art Deco buildings in Miami Beach. I combined the journaling with a photo of the Versace mansion, the only stop on the tour that was not in Art Deco style. We were surprised to hear that it is the third most photographed home in the United States, probably because Versace was gunned down on the steps of his mansion by an assassin.

Next stop, Key West. It was HOT and humid, but way more fun than we expected since Fantasy Fest was beginning.

On our way to visit friends in Charlotte, we drove across the Everglades to the west coast of Florida. We stopped for a ranger’s walking tour, and at the smallest post office in the United States. We didn’t have time for an air boat ride in the Everglades, but hope to cross that off our list in January when we’re visiting with Tracy’s mom. I loved the official Everglades sticker, and knew it would make a good title card for this page.

Recently, I watched part of a three day live video conference with Becky Higgins, and learned about the smaller Project Life page protectors. They were easy to pick up at Michael’s with the weekly coupon, and proved to be perfect for the last two pages where I had fewer photos. Our friends in Charlotte proposed a trip to Asheville to visit the Biltmore Estate. I’d had an opportunity to do that many years ago, but passed since tickets are quite expensive. But I can tell you now, it’s worth the money. We spent the whole day there, and didn’t see all we’d like to have seen. Sadly, no photographs are allowed inside the house. On both of the last pages I used a Cathy Zielske “Labeled Photo Sets” to add two photos in one 6X4 slot.

Finally, I couldn’t leave October without some Halloween photos of my grandchildren as well as two faves their parents sent me during October.

November will surely be quicker to scrap as we’ve been home all month!

Project Life: September

  • by

It’s hard to believe that we’re nearly half-way into October. I wanted to be sure I finished my Project Life pages for September before we got too much further into October. I really think this project is going to work for me. I like that I can do it in stages, and do little bits and pieces when I have a few minutes. This month I started a sketch notebook to help me plan the pages ahead of time, based on the page protectors I wanted to use. It saved a lot of time.

I knew there’d be lots to document in September.

I had the cute Jolee’s sticker of bread in a sack in my stash which worked perfectly for the journaling card.

The reason for our September trip to Chicago was the Installation Service for Adam as Associate Pastor for the Winnetka Presbyterian Church. It was a beautiful service. Although we had attended church there in August, the full choir wasn’t present, and the music was simply gorgeous. It is a wonderful, friendly congration, and it’s clear to me that Sarah and Adam have ended up in a very special place. I didn’t get any really sharp photos of this page. Rest assured the photos themselves (taken by a member of the congregation) are sharper than they appear here. The little title photo was taken with my iPhone as we drove around Chicago and popped into a Cathy Z. template.

A huge contingent of Adam’s relatives live in the midwest and were able to attend the service. His sister, brother-in-law, and nephew were here from England as well as his parents from the west coast. After the church reception, Adam’s parents hosted a luncheon at the church for the relatives. Caleb and Samuel had a great time playing together all weekend. They will both be two this winter.

We woke Caleb up early from his nap our last day there to take him to the Model Railroad Garden at the Chicago Botanic Gardens. When we were there in August we didn’t arrive in time to get to the trains. He absolutely loved it, and never lost his interest the whole time we were there.

I had fun this month creating some journaling cards. On this one I used Papertrey Ink’s “Little Hot Rod” stamps to create the train, and some Studio Calico paper for the “track.”

This journaling card is from Banana Fish. I love the way Caleb is leaning over the fence on his tiptoes to get a better look at the trains.

I had photos from two events–dinner out and a haircut–I wanted to include so I used a piece of Washi tape to divide one of the journaling cards from the PL Midnight Edition and used some very old arrow stickers.

And a page for our birthday girl, Skylar, from her visits this month. I used a Simple Stories 4X3 card, and an old cupcake sticker as well as some alphas I’ve had for a long time the filler card. Another good thing about Project Life:  using up the stash.

And finally, our weekend in the Adirondacks. While we were in Chicago, I discovered a great little independent stamp store and picked up a Lawn Fawn “Into the Woods” 6X6 paper pad. It had the perfect papers to create the journaling card for this page.

It feels so good to have all these events documented and saved! I hope I manage to maintain my enthusiasm.

Project Life and a Class Review

  • by

Project Life has always intrigued me, but I never thought it would be something that would prove useful to me now that my kids are grown and out of the house. After all, some of my weeks are pretty dry—paper crafting, volunteer work, a couple of social engagements. On the other hand, the last scrapbook layouts I made were in February when I finished 29 layouts in one month for LOAD. There’s been a layout on my desk waiting to be finished for over six weeks now.

Then in August I read a blog post on Write, Click, Scrapbook that suggested a monthly Project Life might work better for some people. Aha, I thought! That would work for me. I already had divided page protectors, and lots of small journaling cards from Simple Stories. Some months, we really do have a full and exciting life. August was one. So I decided to dive in. I enrolled in BPS’s class “Project Life Lessons,” and got started. By the end of the second week of class, I had seven pages of photos and memories in a book!

Toward the end of the course I was in Michaels looking for a circle punch, and discovered the Project Life kits. Since I had a generous coupon I picked up the Midnight Edition which, combined with the rest of my stash, should keep me going for months. I decided I’d be happy with a mix of handwritten and typed journaling depending on the page, and after purchasing the Midnight Edition decided to go with rounded corners. I’ve seen some spread recently that combine both rounded and non-rounded corners, and despite my compulsive nature, I think I could go with that as well.

Most of the journaling cards I used for August were created from my stash or a digital kit, but you’ll see more of the Midnight Edition as I move forward.

On a scale of 1-10, I’d give the “Project Life Lessons” at BPC an 8. There were great handouts, a couple of downloads and nine videos. The only reason I don’t give it a 10 is that the content was very uneven among the three instructors. My favorite was Annette Haring. Her videos were jam-packed with information and examples, and her handouts were equally meaty. Her last lesson on organizing for Project Life was especially helpful.

All in all, I think this will work for me. I can work on it little by little, and I’m thrilled to have all these family photos scrapped. Some months there’ll be lots to scrap. We’ve had a pretty interesting September, and October will be loaded. In November there may just be a one page spread for Thanksgiving. I’m going to include my Christmas Journal here this year as well. I did a smaller sized Simple Stories album last year. The only thing I’m not sure about is including it in a big album. I do love having my basket of Christmas Journals out every holiday. But for now, this is feeling like just the right thing!

Thanks to all of you who “do” Project Life. It’s the inspiration I’ve gotten from you that prompted me to even consider it.
