July Link-up for the Summer Photography Scavenger Hunt

  • by

July flew by just as quickly as June. Although I have two short trips planned for August, we’ll be home more than we’re away which is a first for the summer. I’m looking forward to getting back to the craft table, having more time to read, and getting back to the gym on a regular basis. Routines have been hard to come by. I probably would have missed this link-up had Mary-Lou (the kind hostess of the scavenger hunt) not reminded us it was coming.

Travel, among its many pleasures, offers opportunities for photography so several of my offerings this month come from our travels.

Stripes, #2:

Stripes1

My family and travel companions usually get interested in the items for the scavenger hunt. Someone at the table pointed out that Ella’s grilled cheese sandwich was a good contender.

Stripes3

That same day at the beach, the striped umbrellas were everywhere.

Stripes2

On our way to Nantucket we spent a morning in Falmouth. This wooden flag was displayed (for sale) in front of one of the stores.

A framed view: #3:

These are four of my favorite photos from July. The first three are from the Hancock Shaker Village near Stockbridge, Massachusetts. It’s long been on my bucket list, and I hope to have a blog post devoted to our visit up soon.

FramedView3

When I took this last one as we got out of our car on the ferry leaving Nantucket, I didn’t think I’d gotten a very good photo. I was pleasantly surprised when I uploaded it.

FramedView4

I have a couple photos for items in the list that I also found in June. You can find those right here. First off #4, Wings:

Wings

This sea gull cooperated for this photo. He/she was after the fish that were being thrown back in on the Critter Cruise.

Wings2

And another entry for Pedal Power, #5 found outside the Lily Pulitzer store in Nantucket.

PedalPower

Two contenders for #8-A Pile Of:

Pile2

A pile of lobster shells after Maddy’s birthday dinner.

Pile1

A woodpile at the Shaker village.

Our trip to Springdale Farm was the perfect opportunity to get #10, A Field of Plenty.

FieldofPlenty

A Trilogy of Three, #14, was pretty easy since I have three adorable granddaughters who live around the corner. Truthfully, though, it isn’t always so easy to get them all together and willing to have a photograph taken. (And for the record, a fourth adorable granddaughter, and grandson, who live too far away!)

TriolgyofThree

Skylar, Maddy, and Ella in their Pottery Barn chairs. All three received these as gifts from Grandma on their second birthdays. Both Ella and Maddy were thrilled to get theirs since until then they had to share with someone else.

TriologyofThree

On the swings at Bartlett Farms, Nantucket

TrilogyofThree

Matt spotted these in the parking lot of Jetties Beach on Nantucket.

Tracy is responsible for this easy-to-find photo for #17, Re-purposed. Several years ago we purchased this dragonfly made from spoons at an art fair.

Repurposed

Last, #18: Currency. I’ve been purging my stamps for a garage sale event on Sunday, and came across some currency from our travels. It’s another Trilogy of Three as well.

Currency

I’m linking up here with Mary-Lou at Patio Postcards. Thanks, as always, for hosting this fun activity!

Summer Photography Scavenger Hunt: First Check-in

  • by

Tomorrow’s the last day of June, and today is the first check-in for Patio Postcard’s Summer Photography Scavenger Hunt. The hunt runs from June 1 to the last day of summer. It took me awhile to get going, but I have seven of the items on the 20 item list to share.

Rosiness

The Rosiness of Red. I spotted these beautiful roses on the Landmark House and Garden Tour the second weekend in June.

DSC06982ed

Wings: Another beautiful butterfly from the Chicago Botanic Garden.

GloriousGreen

Glorious Green: Hannah in her new yard in Wisconsin.

Unexpected

An Unexpected Reflection: Standing in the kitchen at the house Tracy’s family rented for a week, I spotted the reflection of the lake in the oven door.

PrettyPink

Pretty in Pink:  Stunning roses at Trader Joe’s

PostcardPerfect

Picture Postcard Perfect:  Sunset on Honeoye Lake

And finally, a card to share that I think would qualifiy for “Pedal Power.” I made this card in June just before leaving for Chicago to send to Sarah’s father-in-law, an avid biker. I’m quite sure he doesn’t have a basket on the front of his bike, but I loved this small image from a new stamp set by Pinkfresh called “Itty Bitty Elements.”

Bikes

I stamped five bikes across the bottom part of the card, and then die cut a sixth bike to color and pop up in the middle. I already had a sentiment die cut in red from Papertrey’s “Penned Elegance” that said, “let’s celebrate.” It was quite easy to trim the “let’s” away from the celebrate. I added a strip of patterned paper from MFT “Black and White Stripes” paper pad and a thin strip of Pure Poppy cardstock.

I’m quite sure I’ll find other candidates for some of these selections before the end of summer, but for now, it’s a start. I have another 13 to find.

Summer Photography Scavenger Hunt: Part 2

  • by

It’s time for an update on the scavenger hunt being hosted by Mary-Lou at Patio Postcards. I found 11 of the 25 items in June and I was certain I’d find most of the remaining items on the list while we were on vacation. In fact, by the end of the month I’d found them all. There are a few I’d like to find better examples for, but the pressure is off. I have several photos to posts for some of the items.

Number 4: A zigzag. I found this one at the McKenzie Barn Sale:

Summer Scavenger Hunt 2017: June Report

  • by

Thanks to Mary-Lou at Patio Postcards we have a list for a Summer Photography Scavenger Hunt. I’ve managed to tick off 11 of the 25 items this month, and should be able to find a few more on our trip.

Number 1: Something fuzzy-a catapillar.

01SomethingFuzzy

Number 2: Bubbles.

02Bubbles

03Web1

03Web2

Number 8: Rust. I have two for this one as well. The first on a wooden barrel at Caroline Vineyards in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and the second on a railing going down to the lake at the cottage on Honeoye.

Hannah1

Number 17: Circles or crosses in architecture–from Fort Mississauga in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

17Crosses

Number 19: Feet of man or beast; hope feet of a woman counts. I couldn’t help but notice the variety of colors on my niece’s toes.

19.Feet

And finally, Number 21, a plaque:

21Plaque

You have until September 30th to find the items on the list, which you can access it right here, so if you’d like a photographic challenge, please join in. It’s become a topic of conversation with my friends and family over the years. Everyone wants to know what’s on the list, and is eager to contribute ideas. It’s thanks to Jade and Sarah that I have the web photos. I might have seen them, but they noticed them before I did.

Summer Scavenger Hunt: August Edition

  • by

As I expected, I found quite a few of the items from the 2016 Summer Scavenger Hunt while we were on vacation. Some of them are duplicates of items I found earlier, but I couldn’t resist adding them to the collection. All together I’ve found 20 of the 21 items, and both alternatives. I still need a photograph of twins (#17), but have two possibilities, and there are still a few weeks left before the official end of summer.

So without further ado, here are this month’s photos:

IMG_3461ed

A skeleton (#3) – found at the Whaling Museum on Nantucket. Notice the difference in size between the skeleton and the whaling boat beneath it!

IMG_3686ed

A book read during 2016 (#4) – I’ve read 31 books so far this year, 12 since the start of the scavenger hunt. This was one of the most recent ones.

DSC01883ed

A porch (#5) – in ‘Sconset, Nantucket

TrailerEd

A camper (#6) – I was hoping to find a cuter one than I found in July, and here it was on the Thruway coming home from vacation. I’d love to see the insides.

Bicycles (#10) – I never tire of photographing bicycles. The last one is the one I rented in Nantucket,
parked at the weather station near Altar Rock, the second highest point on Nantucket.

IMG_3665ed

Fresh produce (#11) – at our favorite farm market

IMG_3155ed

IMG_3157ed

IMG_3160ed

A buffet of food (#14) – We went to the most amazing buffet on Sunday when we were in Nantucket. In addition to the dessert table and salads, there was a raw bar, and a table of hot entrees (all covered so not a very exciting photo).

IMG_3161ed

A family gathering (#7) – here we are at the buffet on a porch overlooking Nantucket Harbor

IMG_3654ed

A team logo (#15) – I’m auditing a class this fall at the University of Rochester. When we were there last week trying to find out about parking, I got this shot of their team’s logo.

IMG_3609ed

A map showing a trip taken during the time period (#16)

IMG_3382ed

A photograph of you with a newspaper from the time period covered in the hunt (#21) – My least favorite item on the hunt every year! I picked up a copy
of the local paper in Nantucket. It was first published in 1821.

You can find the original post for the Summertime Photography Hunt right here.

2016 Summertime Scavenger Hunt

  • by

It’s July 31st, and time for the July edition of Rinda’s Summertime Photography Scavenger Hunt.

The first item on the list was a “wild heart-a naturally occurring heart.” I wasn’t sure where I’d find that one, but one morning while I was sitting on our patio, I looked up and there they were on our Morning Glory.

IMG_2762ed

Matt and Betsy have a fabulous deck (#7), and while Sarah, Adam, and Caleb were here we spent a lot of time there. That week turned out to be a good one for scavenger hunt photos.

DSC01608ed

It was also the site of another family gathering, # 11.

IMG_2780ed

The three grandchildren had lots of fun at a local splash park one day, so here are a couple entries for #9, “someone playing in or around water.” (Think I’ll have some more for this one when we get back from our summer vacation.)

DSC01599ed

DSC01584ed

One night we went out to eat, and Adam and I shared a carafe of sangria, #29, “a seasonal cocktail or drink.”( It was so good, I made a pitcher of it this weekend when we entertained our bridge group.)

IMG_2874ed

One absolute “must” on Sarah’s list when she visits is a trip to Abbott’s Ice Cream. Their chocolate almond soft ice cream is terrific. We decided to go to the Abbott’s on Lake Ontario so Caleb could ride the carousel there (last year’s item), and we walked along the beach afterwards, and I got #2, “a footprint.”

IMG_2835ed

The reason that Sarah, Adam, and Caleb chose the first week of July to visit, was the arrival of Madelyn Tyler. Although I posted this photo earlier, I didn’t mark it as a scavenger hunt item. It’s one of the alternates, “baby.”

IMG_2856ed

The next two photos were taken at our local grocery store: #17 “fresh produce,” and #18 ” a cart full of groceries.” This was my shopping trip before our family party early in July so it’s the fullest cart of the summer, I’m sure.

IMG_2754ed

IMG_2755ed

I found #9 on a walk along the cottage road at Honeoye Lake a week or so ago, “a camper.” I’m hoping to find a cuter one along the way, but at least I’ve got it covered.

IMG_2949ed

Earlier this month I posted #13, “the moon,” as a SNAP meme, #12 , “a window” and the other alternate, “a lighthouse,” as part of my Memorandum Monday post. That leaves me with seven items left to find in August and early September. Doable, I hope!

2016 Summertime Photography Scavenger Hunt & A Challenge

  • by

Today is the first day for links to Rinda’s 2016 Summertime Photography Scavenger Hunt. It’s a favorite summer activity for me, and usually by this time, I have quite a few of the items checked off. Not so much this year, but I do have three.

The first one is #8:  A drawing, art project, artistic photograph, greeting card . . . created by you. I’ve actually made quite a few cards since the beginning of June, but here’s my most recent one, and an entry to the Simon Says Wednesday Challenge: Anything Goes.

NoteofThanks

I used a new-to-me Simon Says stamp set called “Spring Flowers,” embossed in white and watercolored with my Zig Clean Color markers. The sentiment is from Papertrey Ink’s “Painted Petals,” white embossed on a scrap of black cardstock.

NoteClose

I added a few rainstones from Papertrey Ink, and mounted the watercolor piece onto some Raspberry Fizz cardstock and then onto a white card base.

Next for the scavenger hunt is #10: a bicycle. We took our first bike ride of the season last week, riding 12.5 miles on the Erie Canal path from the Brighton town park to the Pittsford Dairy where we indulged in homemade ice cream cones. I had black walnut, and it was delicious!

IMG_2740ed

Check out my very cool basket which was a gift from Sarah last year. It’s made byt the Nantucket Basket Company, and I love the shape of it. I also have a new seat this year, also a gift from Sarah. Much more comfortable than my old one.

Last for June, is #20:  Someone laughing.

IMG_2745ed

Our friends, Pete and Arlene, were here for dinner Monday night. I wish you could hear Arlene’s laugh. It’s positively infectious! I’m not sure what the story was, but there was lots of laughing, and I quickly got in a few shots.

You can check out the other scavenger hunt posts right here.

Summertime Photography Scavenger Hunt: August Edition

  • by

At the end of July, I had just two photos (an elaborate door knocker and a turtle) left to find for Rinda’s Summertime Photography Hunt. I knew I’d be able to find both, but I got a bonus photos as well.

I expected to find the door knocker on East Ave. in Rochester, but I didn’t have to wait until we got home. One of our last days in Chicago, Tracy and I took a walk through a beautiful neighborhood in Evanston, not far from Sarah’s new house.

DoorKnocker1_blog

Here’s a closer look:

KnockerClose_blog

One of my favorite places to visit in Highland Park is the Lamberton Conservatory (especially in the winter). There are several small ponds scattered among the plant displays where turtles happily swim about and rest among the plants. I walked up there a week or so ago, and here are three turtle photos.

Turtle1

Turtles2

And my favorite:

Turtles3

But actually, the find of the month was the three flags on a pole. I’d found an acceptable version at the Calgary Stampede, but the photo below is what I really wanted. I first saw it in June as we drove home from Chicago after helping Sarah and Adam move. We were zipping along the Ohio Turnpike, and there was No Way I was ever going to have captured it. In early August, we were (once again) zipping along the turnpike at 70 mph when Tracy said, “Quick, grab your phone! The flags are ahead.” I’m amazed at how clear this photo came out. I had exactly one chance to get it as we flew by.

ThreeFlags_blog

And, lucky me, the wind was blowing so all three flags are flying in the breeze!

You can find all my Summertime Photography Photos for 2015 by clicking on the logo on my sidebar. It will take you to my SmugMug album with all the photos. Thanks, Rinda, for another great summertime photography hunt! It’s one of my favorite activities every summer.

Summertime Scavenger Hunt 2015

  • by

Our vacation gave me ample opportunities to collect photos for Rinda’s Summertime Scavenger Hunt. This post is probably too long, but the truth is, I could have posted even more photos!

#3 A person walking a dog. That would be me, walking Sarah’s dog, Sadie.

#3PersonWalkingDog

#4 People playing cards. I was sitting enjoying a glass of wine, looking out the windows at Many Glacier Hotel when I heard the shuffling of cards behind me. I asked if I could take their photo for the scavenger hunt, and as happened many times during this trip, the request was kindly granted, and interesting conversation ensued. These men all live a few miles from my daughter in Chicago.

#4CardGame

#9 A tent. I had a couple images for this item last month, but found two more I liked on the trip.

#9Tent1

This tent was part of a historical display on the grounds of the Fairmont Jasper Lodge.

#9Tent2

And finally, on the beginning of the trail to Laughing Falls, I found the kind of tent I hoped for, a tent made for camping. You can see Takakkaw Falls, the second largest falls in Canada, in the background.

#10 A college or university. I could easily have found this one in Rochester, but we took a day trip to Missoula, Montana, and I decided it would be more fun to have one from the trip.

#10University

#12 A public restroom. I knew just where to go at home if I didn’t find something interesting on the trip, but I did.

#12Restroom1

At The Iron Horse in Missoula

#12Restroom2

Couldn’t resist this one of the walls of the ladies room at Coco’s Cafe in Jasper.
The definition was too perfect.

#12Restroom3

And who would expect an old stove as a decorative element in a restroom.
At The Truffle Pig in Field, British Columbia.

#13 A merry-go-round. I found the first two the first day we were in Calgary at the Calgary Stampede.

#13Merry-go-round1

Love the little girl in the red cowboy hat.

Merry-g-round2

This merry-go-round was even fancier.

Merry-go-round3

But this merry-go-round in Missoula has the best story: “If you will give it a home, and promise no one will ever take it apart, I will build A Carousel for Missoula.”  That was the promise Missoula cabinet-maker Chuck Kaparich made to the Missoula City Council in 1991.  Kaparich, who had spent many childhood hours on the carousel at Columbia Gardens in Butte, Montana, had already carved four carousel ponies and had purchased an antique frame in thousands of pieces.  The Council agreed and Kaparich’s dream of A Carousel for Missoula became the dream of a community.

#15  A flagpole with at least three flags.

#15Flags

#16 A panoramic view, taken while standing someplace high in the air.

LowerMedicineLake

Taken high above Lower Medicine Lake in Glacier National Park.

#17 At least two people wearing matching uniforms. This was the most fun item on the list. I started a photography project two years ago, called “100 Strangers.” I haven’t posted anything about it, but I will this fall when I get the images all organized. I actually don’t know how many people I have in my collection. The deal is you must ask to take their photo, and every time I have, I’ve had a wonderful response, and frequently, a wonderful conversation to follow. I found the first two pairs at the Calgary Stampede.

RCMounties

We walked and talked with these two mounties for about ten minutes after the photo was taken. They had to be so hot. It was nearly 90° that afternoon, and those uniforms are not lightweight.

CalgaryHostesses

Two cute gals at the information booth.

StampedeBand

One of two bands that performed at the rodeo at the Calgary Stampede.

Sheriffs

Two Babb County, Montana sheriffs waiting for dinner at Two Sisters.
We talked to them for about 15 minutes while we all waited for a table,
and learned all kinds of things about the area.

#18 An overloaded truck. The first one was on the expressway in Rochester.

#18Truck1

#18Truck2

Tracy said I had to get this one, too. Check out the beads hanging from the sideview mirrors.

#20 A natural body of water. I could have shared at least 20 photos here, but I picked five of my favorites.

BowLake

Bow Lake off the Icefields Parkway.

EmeraldLake

Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park

MoraineLake

Moraine Lake, in Lake Louise. (Photos of Lake Louise are here.)

UpperWatertonLake

Upper Waterton Lake, taken from the front of the Prince of Wales Hotel

Valleyof5Lakes

Third Lake, in the Valley of the Five Lakes. In June 2014, Parks Canada placed six sets of red Adirondack chairs in quiet and scenic locations throughout Jasper National Park for visitors to enjoy the exquisite mountain and lakeside vistas. Since then, they’ve added several more pairs of them. We saw at four or five of them and had our photos taken in the pair in front of Takakkaw Falls.

#21 A photo of you with a sign “2015 Summertime Photography Scavenger Hunt.” I printed out a sign before we left and carried it in my backpack waiting for a good moment. We decided it was time when we got to Emerald Lake.

Me

And last, but not least, the three alternate photos:

People eating outside (at the Calgary Stampede):

AlternateA

Someone holding an umbrella:

AlternateBUmbrella

A rocking chair at the gift shop at Many Glaciers Hotel:

AlternatecRockingChair

I still have two photos left to find, the turtle and the ornate door knocker. I know just where to find the turtle, and I’m thinking a walk down East Ave. in Rochester will produce the ornate door knocker.

Be sure to stop by Rinda’s blog to see photos from all over the world captured for the scavenger hunt. To see all my captures for this year’s scavenger hunt you can click on the icon on the side bar which takes you to my SmugMug album.

2015 Summertime Scavenger Hunt June Link-up

  • by

I always love Rinda’s Summertime Scavenger Hunt, and it amazes me how quickly friends and family start looking for items on the list as we’re traveling together. My niece’s husband wanted to know what was on the list this year. He remembers the year I got a great photo of a train passing by as we were walking down to the Hudson to see the fireworks over the Fourth of July. This weekend we were on a road trip to the Hudson Valley. I knew exactly where I could find #6, a metal bridge (even though we have a lovely one right here in Rochester.) We got a bit of exercise in the process.

IMG_8846ed_blog

This photo is taken from a metal bridge, The Walkway Across the Hudson, looking out to the Mid-Hudson Bridge that crosses at Poughkeepsie, New York. It’s 1.28 miles across and the longest pedestrian bridge over water in the United States. Here’s a better view of the Mid-Hudson Bridge.

IMG_8845ed_blog

And a map that shows the views from the bridge.

IMG_8844ed_blog

While we were in Hyde Park, I wanted to go to the Culinary Institute of America. They have a lovely shop, and I’ve purchased some perfect spatulas there in the past. I wanted a second small one, but they no longer carry them. It’s in an old monastery situated on the Hudson River and a wonderful place to take photographs. I’d forgotten how many architectural columns there were, however. Here is #5:

IMG_9171ed_blog

IMG_9172ed_blog_edited-1

IMG_9176ed_blog

We took a scenic route to Hyde Park through the Catskills this year, and found #9, a tent along Rte. 20.

IMG_9156ed_blog

When my brother heard “tent” was on the list, he drove by this one. I took it quickly from the window, and didn’t check to see if it was blurry. It is.

IMG_9184ed_blog

# 11 is a cellular tower or satellite dish. I was looking out the window to the right on Rte. 30 when Tracy suddenly turned around. Out to the left he spotted this row of satellite dishes.

IMG_9160ed_blog

Someone plugged into social media is #8. Tracy and I regularly walk our neighborhood, and we track our distance on an iPhone app called Runkeeper. Tracy’s also known for adding to his “to do” list as we walk along, and here he is, doing just that.

IMG_9085ed_blog

The week we were in Chicago helping Adam and Sarah move, we took a morning off to take Caleb to the Chicago Botanic Garden. I have lots of photos from that morning, but this is the only one I’ve edited: #19 A ticket booth. The Chicago Botanic Garden has a separate Model Train Garden for which there is an additional charge (and well worth the price of admission!)

IMG_8786ed_blog

We’re very fortunate not to have significant traffic in the Rochester area, but Monroe Ave. which I travel regularly is getting busier and busier. We had quite a wait to get through the traffic signals one evening when Tracy was driving, so I got #14, a traffic signal.

IMG_9139ed_blog

So that’s eight items (#1 was posted earlier). I have my sign for #21 all printed and in my folder and hope to find a really beautiful spot in the Canadian Rockies for that photo. I’m thinking there are quite a few other items on the list that should be easy to find on our vacation as well. All my photos are in a SmugMug album you can access by clicking on the 2015 Summertime Photography Scavenger Hunt logo on my sidebar.

And a special thanks to Rinda for hosting, yet again, another fun hunt.

Pairs: A Bouquet of Peonies

  • by

Our peonies are in bloom, and I brought enough in to create a bouquet for the dining room table since we had guests for dinner on Monday night. Here are two views, one from the top, and a closer look from the side.

BouquetAbove_blog

FromTheSide_blog

I’m linking this pair up to Helena’s meme, Pairs, where you can always find some weekly inspiration for your photography.

Small2015photohunt

This also qualifies for my first find (and #1 on the list) for Rinda’s Summertime Photography Scavenger Hunt. Almost every year, there is one item for which I find multiple subjects. A bouquet of flowers may just be the item this year. It’s not too late to join in on the fun. You can check out the list on Rinda’s side bar. And on my sidebar, you can click on the Summertime Photography Hunt image and it will take you to this year’s SmugMug album.

Final 2014 Scavenger Hunt Post

  • by

Although it’s felt like fall for over a week now, I still have trouble believing summer is over! It’s so hard for me to let go of the sunny, warm weather knowing a long, cold winter is in front of me. I finished Rinda’s Scavenger Hunt last month, and you can see all my scavenger hunt photos here, but I do have a few extras to share.

First the alternatives:

A birdhouse. This was easy. We have one in our pear tree in our front yard. The first two years it was inhabited by wrens, but it has stayed empty this year.

IMG_6211ed_blog

Tracy also has a decorative birdhouse that sits in the garden by our side door.

IMG_6215ed_blog

A hot air balloon. One afternoon sitting on the lawn at the cottage on Conesus Lake, I looked up and saw this hot air balloon floating across the sky.

IMG_5701ed_blog

When Sarah was here this summer, we visited the Avon Flea Market and I found some different horns:

IMG_6647ed_blog

IMG_6658ed_blog

It’s so amusing to find them mixed in with such a random assortment of items.

As always, the scavenger hunt was lots of fun, and I’m already looking forward to the 2015 version. Thanks, Rinda, for hosting such a wonderful summer project!

At the end of July, I had just six items left for Rinda’s Summer Scavenger Hunt. I was uncertain whether I would find all the rest or not, but indeed, I have.

#4 A group of tourists entering the Strong Museum of Play

#12 A mascot: I found this cutie at the RIT Book Store when I was there picking up some art supplies.

#13 A sunrise. This I knew I’d get. It was just a matter of getting up early enough to capture it. I talked Tracy into going up to Lake Ontario with me by offering to buy him breakfast afterwards. It was a beautiful morning.

And here’s a side benefit of our early morning run: a Blue Heron catching his breakfast. (We also saw a river otter slink along the bank, but he was too fast for me to capture.)

#14 A parade (I love these guys!)

And a parade of ducks swam by the morning we were at the lake.

#15 A juggler. It turns out we have two friends who juggle. Rob happened to be at our house for a meeting, and cheerfully offered to juggle a few lemons for me. The fact that all three are not in the air is a photographer error. Should have set my camera for continuous shoot. Duh!

#20 A bus with a picture painted on its sides. We drove by this charter bus depot several days on the way to Conesus Lake in August before I realized they all had painted sides. Most of them had a small covered wagon painted on them. I could have lived with that, but as we drove out of the parking lot I spied this bus. Much more impressive.

I am, of course, always on the lookout for better subjects for the scavenger hunt. I recently found a “better” bakery, and who knows what might pop up before the Autumnal Equinox. You can see all my summer scavenger hunt photos (there are multiple versions of some) right here.

We’re off to spend the day with friends who’ve rented a cottage on Owasco Lake. It’s cool, but sunny, and another way to eek out the last of summer’s pleasures. I’ll link this up to Rinda’s Summer Scavenger Hunt when I get home.

Summer Scavenger Hunt: Part 3

  • by

How can it be the end of July already? The summer is flying by far too quickly, and it’s time for the July wrap-up of Rinda’s Scavenger Hunt. I have four more photos to add, and just five left to find. They, of course, are the hardest ones. I’m pretty sure I can find three of the five, but two are seeming pretty difficult right now. Maybe I’ll get lucky!

Here are the latest captures: #3 Birds on a wire. This proved a bit more difficult than I expected. We found a huge group of birds on a wire driving home from our camping trip a couple of weeks ago. Tracy pulled over a good distance from them. I got my camera ready, but as I walked toward them, most of them flew off. These were the brave ones.

#9 A bakery. A new bakery and cafe just opened up near us. Sarah, Caleb, Tracy, and I ate lunch there on Tuesday.

#11 A horn. I actually have several images to share, all taken at the Antique Boat Museum two weeks ago.

And last, but not least, #21 A photo of you with soemting representing the season. Here I am relaxing at our camp site (definitely a summer-only activity in western New York) with a glass of wine before dinner.

By clicking on the Summer Scavenger Hunt logo on my sidebar you can find all my scavenger hunt photos in a SmugMug gallery. I’m off to discover what other finds have been made around the globe for this fun, summer project!

2014 Summer Scavenger Hunt

I’ve got a pretty good start on Rinda’s Summer Scavenger Hunt this year. I’ll have a link to a SmugMug gallery up next week sometime, but for now here are the ones I’ve found so far.

#1 A sign welcoming people to your home town.

We live on the border of Brighton and the city of Rochester so this sign is just a short walk away from our house.

#2 A garden gnome

I found these lively guys for sale at our local grocery store. I gave some thought to bringing one home, but decided against it. I’ll have another offering for this in a week or so. My mother-in-law knew I was looking for one, and found one in a neighbor’s yard.

#5 A rack of post cards

These postcards were displayed  at Sauder’s Amish Market when we were there Saturday.

#6 An urban stree scene

Last night was my last photography class at the Community Darkroom, and we were sent out to take photos for the first 45 minutes of class. I didn’t expect to have this one checked off until later.

#7 A rural landscape

IMG_5119ed_blog

I knew I’d find a good prospect for this item on our trip to Ithaca on Saturday. I was hoping for black and white cows with a red barn, but was happy with the sheep and the blue silo.

#8 A tatoo on a person

IMG_4899ed_blog

My daughter, Sarah, has wanted a tatoo for years. Frankly, I thought she’d given up on the idea, but that is what she wanted from Adam for Christmas last year. She worked with a tatoo artist in North Chicago to create the tatoo she wanted. The three large stars are for her three boys, Micah and Judah (the twins who did not survive), and Caleb. I knew what her plan was, but was surprised by the size of the tatoo, expecting it to be much smaller. When Rinda published her list, Sarah was here visiting and was willing to pose for a photo.

#17 A lamp post

IMG_4877ed_blog

Another find thanks to my photography class. This light post is next to the Frederick Douglass-Susan B. Anthony Memorial Bridge. You can see the underside of the bridge in the background.

#18 A waterfall

IMG_5095ed_blog

Ithaca is surrounded by gorges and waterfalls. This photograph was on Saturday’s agenda.

I’ll have my Zoom In, Zoom Out up tomorrow morning, and then I’m off to the Presbyterian Church’s 221st General Assembly in Detroit. I’m going as an observer just for the weekend since the head of staff at my church is standing for Moderator of the Assembly. You can read about that here on one of Adam’s posts.
