Enjoy the Ride!

  • by

I have a birthday card today for a friend who is an avid bike rider. I’m guessing the Memory Box bicycle die doesn’t exactly replicate his road bike, but I thought he’d enjoy the card nonetheless.

Enjoy

I started with the bicycle die, and finally decided on one of the papers from Maille Belle’s “Black and White All Over” collection. It’s proving to be pretty versatile. The sentiment is from a Papertrey Ink stamp set of the same name, “Enjoy the Ride” that’s an oldie, but goodie.

EnjoyClose

I love the dimension you get with the die cut for the bike basket. I’m entering this into the Wednesday Challenge at Simon Says, “Make It Masculine.” I still have a few hours to get a couple Father’s Day cards done for the challenge as well, but probably will enter them through Flickr since all the fathers I’m creating for read my blog at least occasionally.

Ten on Tuesday, and a Wave to Sian a Day Late

  • by

I’m joining in today with Ten on Tuesday, and I think this qualifies for Sian’s “Me on Monday” meme, though a day late.  The prompt seemed perfect: 10 Things You Did This Weekend. This weekend was a holiday weekend, and it seemed like one. The weather was lovely, and we made time for some special activities.

  1. I started my weekend with a meeting with my personal trainer. Since we’ve returned from our winter travels, I’ve been great about going to spinning class and/or walking regularly, but I was not getting back to the weight room. A half hour review was all the motivation I needed. Went back yesterday as well.
  2. We’ll be away again for part of June, and nearly all of July so I needed to get a head start on making cards for the upcoming birthdays and anniversaries, as well as several special events. I finished 14! Some of them will be forthcoming on blog posts.
  3. We watched the Blue Angels fly over our house for three days during the Rochester Air Show. Almost (but not quite) got a great photo of them flying right over my head while I was walking home from the library.
  4. Saturday we made our annual spring trip to the Ithaca Farmer’s Market (and a few other fun stops along the way). I bought some French Breakfast radishes, some green garlic, a loaf of Zatar pita bread, some curly parsley to plant at home, a cherry filled scone, and a gift for an upcoming birthday.

        5.  For the second year in a row, we managed to pick graduation weekend to go to Ithaca. The
Cornell campus was busier than usual, and there were lots of families celebrating at
The Boatyard where we had a wonderful lunch overlooking the inlet to Cayuga Lake.
        6.  Saturday night we had dinner with our good friends, ending it with a delicious piece of
             strawberry-rhubarb pie.
        7.  Sunday morning Tracy dropped me off in Canandaigua to join the Rochester Sketch Meet-up
group at the pier on Canandaigua Lake to sketch the boat houses. It was a perfect day, sunny
but not too warm with a lovely breeze coming off the lake. While I sketched, Tracy drove
to Naples to visit the cemetery.

IMG_8592ed_blog

         8. When Tracy returned we went to lunch at the very best Mexican restaurant in the area,
Rio Tomatlin. It was our first visit since they moved into a much larger (and nicer) place
following a fire about a year ago. The food was, as always, outstanding, and it was nice
              enough to eat outside.

IMG_8908ed_blog

        9.  I finished the planting in my cutting garden, adding some new perennials and filling in
with some zinnias, snapdragons, and dahlias. Some of them are budded already so maybe
there will be some flowers on the table earlier than usual.

IMG_8920ed_blog

        10.  Unexpectedly, but delightfully, we had dinner with Matt, Betsy, Skylar, and Ella two nights
in a row. Once at our house, and then at their’s. Here are the cuties all dressed up for the
annual Memorial Day parade their neighborhood hosts every year.

I’m off to Buffalo tomorrow to meet Melissa and Robbie from Texas, so the fun doesn’t end here!

April: Project Life Catch-up

  • by

Rinda has been working on one creative project each month, and I decided to designate April as Project Life Catch-up. I have the layouts mapped out by the number that need to be completed each week, and if I can stay the course, I’ll be caught up by May 2.

It’s not hard to reconstruct our months. My Lightroom library keeps all the photos organized, and I keep a daily journal. I have to admit, I rarely have to consult the journal. As soon as I see the photos, the stories come right back. I’ve decided not to worry about filler cards and embellishments. What matters to me are the photos and the stories. If I come across the right embellishment I’ll use it; otherwise I’ll stick to photos and journaling.

Here’s June 2014:

JulyDoubleSpread1

I’m using the Papertrey Ink Monthly Moment dies and stamps to create the title cards for 2014. I have a different plan when I reach 2015. I also used the Monthly Moment stamps “celebrate” and “4th of July.” Other supplies on these two pages are Tracy Larsen’s Simply White templates, Cathy Zielski Tiny Templates, a template from Sahlin Studio,a die (remember) from Paper Smooches, Stitched Rectangle die (PTI), a Simple Stories 4X3 card for journaling, and a bit cut from the brochure from the Antique Boat Museum.

JulyDouble2

I’m not quite sure where the “hello summer” card came from. It was a freebie, and if anyone knows who to attribute it to, I’d love to know. The two journaling cards came from Monthly Moment card packs. I only have two sets, and plan to order some more now that I have a template all figured out for getting my journaling exactly on the lines! Both bits on the journaling cards are from Crate Paper: “The Open Road.”

Julyp4

The importance of scrapbooking became even more apparent this week. About six weeks ago, a dear friend who was 92 passed away. She’d been in a skilled nursing home with dementia for nearly two years, but was surprisingly alert on occasion. This week her husband (of 67 years), and one of our former pastors, also passed away. It seems this is often the case where one death leads rather quickly to another, and I will miss both of them tremendously. I’ve been helping their son go through some of their belongings this weekend, and we came across a scrapbook of sorts that includes photos of my family going back 35 years. The first photo of Sarah is when she is about two, and there are a few of Tracy and me before that. In addition to our photos, there were photos of so many couples we know from church. Some of them have changed a lot; others hardly at all. It was so much fun to go through them. Like my photos, a single photo can conjure up quite a story.

Birthday Greetings

  • by

A little break in the action from all the valentines. My niece’s birthday is this weekend, and the Less Is More challenge to combine pink and gray appealed to me. I also wanted to put the Simon Says December card kit and stamp set to use. I have a couple different “Sparkle and Shine” sets from different companies, and I like them all. I also got to use the Simon Says “Stitched Circle” dies which I just love. The rectangles and squares are on their way to me. I finally broke down and ordered them after making this card. The die creates a stitched line on both the outside and inside of the circle.

Sparkle

The Smoke cardstock (Simon Says), Hibiscus Burst (Papertrey) and silver from the December card kit were all layered onto a white card base. The sequins are all from Pretty Pink Posh. Their sequins are the best!

Here’s a look at the inside sentiment:

SparkleInside

Two more stitched circle dies and a stamp from the “Sparkle and Shine” set. I hope this isn’t too “fancy” for my niece who is one of those absolutely lovely Earth girls!

One Photo & Twenty Words

I’m joining in with Abi’s meme to share one of my favorite moments from our recent trip to Chicago.

Sarah has been called as Acting Associate Pastor at the Winnetka Congregational Church. Proud parents on her first official Sunday.

Merry Christmas!!!

Merry Christmas!

We’ll be celebrating with all Tracy’s family later this afternoon, and in Chicago with Sarah, Adam, and Caleb over the weekend.  We had a quiet celebration with Matt, Betsy, Skylar, and Ella earlier this week, and this is just the perfect photo to wish all of you a joyous holiday!

Christmas Cards

  • by

I’m pretty sure everyone has received their Christmas cards so I’ll share the three designs I made this year. Two are very similar in design, but different in content.

FairIsle

I certainly did not need a new Christmas/winter stamp set this year, but when I saw “Fair Isles” I knew exactly what I’d do with it. I rarely use embossing on cards that I need to mass produce, but this year I used that technique on all three cards.

Blessings

This card is very similar in design, but has a more religious feel to it. These churches reminded me of the ones we saw in Santorini last year. The churches and the sentiments on this card and the one above are both from Papertrey Ink’s “Holiday Home” set.

Last, but actually the first card set I made, is one with an embossed vellum tag. I’ve seen a lot of that on cardmaking blogs this fall, and wanted to give it a try. I could only make 12 of these since I had just six sheets of Simon Says’ woodgrain cardstock. I tried one without it, and it just wasn’t anywhere near as good.

Cheer

The sentiment is from Papertrey’s “Stylish Sentiments: Holidays” and the tag is the Tag Sale #6.

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas. The countdown has definitely begun!

The Christmas Club

  • by

Sian has once again come up with a great idea for some holiday blogging–a revival of her 2010 Christmas Club stories. Just begin with:  At Christmas we . . .

_MG_3785blog

At Christmas we have a family band.

It started in 2007 when my brother-in-law gave Tracy’s sister an accordian for their anniversary. Tracy, Greg, and Jill all played in an award-winning accordian band when they were in high school. They traveled around the country and won quite a few prizes. When his brother, Greg, saw the gift he suggested Jill learn a few Christmas carols and they’d play at Christmas. Greg is a professional musician and my brother-in-law, Tom, plays the drums in a local band so right away they had a trio.

Over the years, the band has grown. Two of our nieces brought very talented boyfriends to Christmas dinner for several years, Greg’s significant other is a musician from Austin, both Tracy’s cousin and her daughter are talented musicians as well, so the band sounds pretty good. Jill, however, gave up her place in the band after the first year or two.

IMG_2591blog

Hollis, my niece’s boyfriend, seen here playing the flute, also plays the piano, bagpipes, and mandolin. He’s got a great voice too.

BandCollage

We’re never quite sure who will bring what instrument, but for the last seven years the family band has entertained us in style. You can find other Christmas Club stories here.

Project Life: OLW & March

  • by

Thanks to keeping a daily log and maintaining my Lightroom files, catching up on my Project Life pages isn’t too difficult. I found some time to get back to it recently, and although it’s not a particularly fast process, I’m beginning to find one that works pretty well for me. I neglected to add anything about my One Little Word on my February pages, so decided to start with a page devoted to both February and March.

OLW

I think I’ll stick with Tracy Larsen’s Simply White templates. I like the clean look and it’s easy to pop the photos in the templates instead of having to resize them for the different pockets. The two quote cards came from pins here and here. The three 3X4 cards in the middle are all from a Cocoa Daisy Project Life kit, and the perfect little stickers (“books”) is a Basic Grey alpha that I’m pretty sure came with the same kit. I stamped the names of the months with Papertrey Ink’s “Calendar Basics” stamps.

OLWJournaling

This is a Cathy Zielske Basic Journalers card along with a couple of her “Months and Days” brushes. I know quite a few people who keep track of their progress with their OLW through Ali Edward’s course on Big Picture Classes, but this seems like enough for me.

Lucky

One of the things I like to do is keep track of the cards I make each month. I used to keep track of layouts as well, but now that I’m doing pocket pages, I’ve stopped worrying about that. I also wanted to remember my lucky win at Papertrey Ink.

MarchFull

March ended up being a two page spread. The title card was created with Monthly Moments stamps and die from Papertrey Ink, and the calendar is from a digital file by Katie Pertiet that I recolored. I lowered the opacity of the year. My digital skills are pretty basic, so I’m always quite pleased with myself when I remember to do something like that! The journaling card is also a digital file by Splendid Finn that I printed out. I love the little Oscars card where I typed up a list of all the films we saw prior to the awards. It was a freebie at Laura Kate is Crafty. I also used two of Cathy Zielske’s “Tiny Templates” to create the photo collage and journaling about our trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake, and my love of Face Time.

March1

March2

Here’s a closer look at the journaling for March:

MarchJournaling

And my favorite hand-made card for the month created with Papertrey Ink’s “A Few Pointers” die, and Simon Says “You” stamp set and die.

You

Everytime I finish a Project Life page, I’m so glad I started this process. I’ve started with the pages for April, but need to find some concentrated time to finish them up. Here we are at the end of June (just how did that happen?), so I’m still three months behind!

Less Is More: Watercolour

  • by

It’s not often that I publish two posts on the same day, but today is the last day of Less Is More’s Watercolour challenge, and I have two cards I’d like to share. They were both made with the stamps from the Simon Says June Card Kit, “Favorite Flowers.” One is a birthday card for a blogging friend across the Big Pond, and the other for a friend who is facing some very hard times right now.

CardPair

I stamped and white embossed the whimsical flowers on Tim Holtz’s watercolor paper, then watercolored them with my Peerless watercolors. They are quickly becoming my favorite watercolors. After cutting out the flowers and leaves, I partially inked the grid stamp (A Stamp in the Hand) on Neenah white cardstock, and stamped the sentiments.

BDWishes

I chose Plum Pudding paper and inks for this one (Papertrey Ink), and stamped a sentiment from Papertrey’s “Birthday Style.”  Then I arranged the flowers and the Pretty Pink Posh sequins.

SendingHugs

The cardstock for this card came from my stash, but is most likely Bazzill. The sentiment is from a relatively new Simon Says set called “Friendship Messages.” I love the font. One requirement for the Less is More challenge is to leave plenty of white space. I think the subtle grid pattern qualifies for white space.

I’m also linking these up to the Simon Says Work It Wednesday blog.

Summer Scavenger Hunt: Part 2

  • by

When I traveled to Detroit last weekend, I had my traveling companions on the lookout for the scavenger hunt items I needed. We found a few, and they had a great idea for one of the items I thought would be the hardest. One of the things I love about this project is how easily my friends and traveling companions jump into the project helping me find just the right photo.

#16 on the list is “a sign in a language other than English. The first one we encountered was in Canada at a rest stop.

IMG_6201ed_blog

But then when traveling on the People Mover in Detroit one evening on our way to the Fort St. Presbyterian Church,we found even better signs side by side.

IMG_6222ed_blog

IMG_6224ed_blog

I thought #10, a photo bomb (someone found lurking in the background of a photo) would be another difficult find. But Betsy’s niece popped her head into a photo I was taking of Matt and Tracy on Father’s Day. I think Nadia was surprised to find out I was HAPPY to see her in the photo!

IMG_5212ed_blog

I knew I’d have another entry for #2:  a garden gnome, since my mother-in-law discovered her neighbor’s garden gnomes. Now I have some in a garden setting. (And they’re a lot cuter than the ones I found at Wegmans.)

IMG_5256ed_blog

I took some photos with my iPhone (the signs were also taken with my phone) of a public garden (#19) a few blocks from our house. I have them in my SmugMug album, but I’m sharing the beautiful public gardens at The George Eastman House here.

You can find more information about Rinda’s Summer Scavenger Hunt right here. It’s never too late to join in. The hunt continues until the last day of summer. I’ve finally added Rinda’s graphic to my sidebar with a link to all my Summer Scavenger Hunt photos in my Smug Mug album.

One Photo & Twenty Words

I love Abi’s meme “One Photo & Twenty Words” and have a fun photo for it. I’ll try to get this linked up when I’m away, but I may not be able to manage it until I get home on Sunday.

these two-year olds enjoy every minute of their time together.

Zoom In, Zoom Out

  • by

It’s been quite a few years since I’ve colored Easter eggs, but Caleb, Sarah, Tracy, and I had a fine time coloring eggs before we left Chicago. It was the perfect opportunity for this week’s Zoom In, Zoom Out, Helena’s fine meme. We’ll start with the Zoom Out, and get closer and closer. Caleb was clearly pleased with the project.

Tomorrow we’ll get a chance to watch Skylar hunt for her Easter eggs. It’s supposed to be a glorious warm and sunny Easter here. I hope the weather man is not wrong!

Zoom In, Zoom Out: Week 11

  • by

March is typically a very fickle month, weather-wise, in western New York, and this year is no exception. On Tuesday it was near 60°, and we were finally able to get a nice long walk outside. Yesterday this is what happened.

IMG_3512ed_blog

Here’s my Zoom In, Zoom Out for Week 11:

Zoom-in-zoom-out-button

Week11Diptych_blog

We had 18-20″ of snow. You can see that it comes up over my knees.

IMG_3510ed_blog

Really, I’ve had enough! It was only 15° today, and although it’s supposed to be warmer tomorrow it will be another week or more before the sidewalks are clear enough to walk outside again. The roads today were still terrible. Matt has a new job with a wonderful landscape company. They plow during the winter, and Matt was out from 11 o’clock Wednesday morning until 8 o’clock Thursday morning with just a couple of breaks. Spring officially begins on March 20th, just a week away. Let’s hope it looks a lot more like spring by then!
