Color Hues #114

  • by

Bonnie has chose a very versatile color combination for the mid-July Color Hues Challenge

CH #114-Yellow and Green.001

I decided to try a new-to-me technique I saw on Tina Smith’s blog called “die cut dipping.” You smoosh some ink from an ink pad onto a glass mat or similar surface, spritz it with water and dip your die cut into the ink. Tina started with colored cardstock, but because I had previously die cut multiple images of the flowers, leaves, and pot from Altenew’s Houseplants diesI needed to use a clean waterbrush to smooth out and add ink to missing spots on the die cut. Even as I was going through the process, I wasn’t sure if it was going to work, but I’m quite happy with the results.

I also added some interest to the leaves with a finger dauber and a bit of darker ink. The background for the hanging basket is Subway Tiles by Taylored Expressions. The leaves cover most of the pot, but it was one of my favorites from using this technique. There are four piece to that die cut and it looked so realistic.

Once again The Greetery came to the rescue with the perfect sentiment. I used another of those sentiments on an earlier Color Hues card, but this time I added the flourish and die cut it with the die from Garden Gateway die which I have never used before. (Sadly, the Garden Gateway remains in the NBUS box.)

I hope you’ll jump over to the Color Hues blog to see what wonderful designs our Guest Designer, Von Marie, and our Design Team have created. And, of course, we’d love to see you in the gallery!

This is definitely off to Darnell’s NBUS link since Houseplants have been in that too-full Need to Use box for far too long. It’s also off to the TicTacToe Challenge. I used the left-hand side of the grid going down: foliage, layers, flowers.

  1. Karen, consider your die cut dipping technique a major success; your hanging floral houseplant is beautiful, especially placed atop the brick background. Perfect sentiment, too.

  2. This die cut dipping technique turned out beautifully Karen, and I think I’m going to need to try that! Your flowers, leaves and hanging basket all turned out so pretty and especially striking against the brick background! Lovely, lovely card my friend!! Hugs. :0)

  3. This turned out so well, Karen and your foliage looks so realistic! The brick EF background could not have been a better choice. Wonderful job with these colors!

  4. Lovely card. The hanging foliage is a perfect example of the die dipping. Thanks for introducing us to this new die cutting technique – you know I’m going to try it (col) & I just found a package of finger daubers in my stash, so I’m ready to go.

  5. Kudos on getting all these tiny pieces colored and assembled, Karen, and what a beautiful assembly they made! LOVE this hanging basket, my friend!

  6. The houseplant dies are my new all time favorite flowers and you’ve used them so beautifully and next time I create with them I’m going to try your technique for coloring them. Good to see your pretty card in our TTT challenge – thanks for joining us!

  7. I agree with Carol, the dipping technique has worked really well, it’s given lots of depth and texture to those flowers and leaves. I must say that I use plain white die cuts quite a lot as I can never find the exact colour of card in my stash!:)

  8. Don’t you love that die set, Karen? When I saw your card, it reminded me I’ve only used mine once and it needs to have another outing soon! I do love the texture and variation of color you achieved with the color dipping. It’s fun and messy way to play around with inks. I’ve done it with whole panels of white, then die cut from it after drying. Love your design with the brick background and that pretty sentiment. Beautiful card!

  9. Yay for NBUS! I adore this card! So much depth. And I definitely need to try the dipping technique. Just beautiful Karen!

  10. Just gorgeous Karen – saw it over on Darnell’s NBUS blog and had to pop over for a closer look! Your colour dipping was a great success but the whole card is just put together so beautifully – the colours, the layout, the sentiment, the background! Well deserved showcase from Darnell! Hugs, Kate!
