Color Hues 98

  • by

It’s my turn to be the hostess and to choose the colors for the new Color Hues Challenge:

CH #98 Red and Black.001

If you’ve followed me for some time, you aren’t surprised by this choice. Red and Black are two of my favorite color combinations. I often choose them when making masculine cards, but I also love them for Christmas cards. Since my stash of Christmas cards is very limited (and time is running short), I chose Christmas as my theme for this challenge.

I pulled out my favorite poinsettia die: Altenew’s 3D P0insettia. I die cut it from Gina K’s Red Hot cardstock-one of the most vibrant reds in my collection. I found the background paper in my stash of card fronts that I created but never used. It was splattered with gold, so I used the Gansai Tambi Starry Night watercolors to splatter the poinsettia as well. I finished it with three small Pinkfresh Studio Gold Pearls.

Then I added the panel to a cream card base. The sentiment from Pinkfresh Studio’s Hot Foil Perfect Sentiments: Holiday was also in an envelope of premade sentiments. Having these premade panels and sentiments makes card making a bit faster. Since it’s more time consuming to get out my hot foil machine, when I do, I make multiples and stash them away.

I hope this color combo inspires you to join us at the Color Hues Blog. Whether you choose a holiday card or another theme, we’d love to see you in our gallery. There’s always lots of inspiration on the Color Hues Blog to get you started!

  1. I’m swooning over your gorgeous card! The poinsettia is lovely and all the more dramatic in being paired with black and gold. WOW! Thank you for the wonderful colour combination; so many possibilities.
    hugs~carol

  2. Black and red are a great combo. I used to have an outfit in those colours and so did a colleague. Occasionally we turned up as twins!
The card is lovely and has a lot of depth. Great idea to spatter the red to tie it in with the black. You take such trouble over the finer points of your projects!

  3. Absolutely STUNNING and oh so dramatic in red & black! That Poinsettia die is one of my favorites too Karen, and you’ve used it so beautifully against the black background!! I love the gold splatters and foiled sentiment too…adds even more elegance! This definitely was a fun color combo to work with…thank you!! Hugs. :0)

  4. I love a poinsettia and this one is fabulous! I was tempted to go down this route but saw yours and decided to go down a different route. The red bloom looks stunning against the black speckled with gold, very classy. 🙂

  5. Beautiful Christmas card, Karen! It is not easy doing gold splatters on a dark background as they show up so well, you have added just enough to make this elegant. The gallery is going to be awesome, I just know it!

  6. I love these colors Karen, and even more so, love your elegant, sophisticated card! The poinsettia is gorgeous and rightfully takes center stage on your card, with just the perfect amount of gold splatter. I have a few different red cardstocks, but I think the one used for the poinsettia is a must have! I agree with Nancy, I think our gallery will be full of gorgeous cards.

  7. WOW ! This big red poinsettia over the black background is just striking ! The gold splatters and the gold Perls in the center of the flower are just the perfect final touch for this beauty. Glad to be guest designing with you all for this fortnight.

  8. Karen, this is a Christmas decoration I would take out year-after-year! Somehow you have made that stunning poinsettia look like it is made from fine supple leather. I want you to make me a purse! Hugs, Darnell

  9. Ooh, so gorgeous! I wasn’t the least surprised that you selected this color combo. I just saw Michele F’s card using this die for another challenge.

  10. The size and dimension of this poinsettia is amazing and set off so beautifully with the black background. I love this color combo!!! Thanks for choosing it at such a perfect time.
