Five in Five on the 5th: Peonies in the Park

  • by

Today is June 5th, and time for Sandie’s monthly challenge, 5 in5,  to take five photos in five minutes. With that challenge in mind, I took a series of photos in Highland Park of the gorgeous peonies. Although we live just a short walk from the park, our peonies are just budded. Sadly, there aren’t a lot of buds on our peonies again this year despite applying some fertilizer twice this spring. Not a problem for the peonies in the park which are just gorgeous.

And finally, my favorite.

And as always, thanks to Sandie for hosting this meme which has sent me off with my camera every month for several years now.

  1. The last is my favourite too. Looks like another lovely park. It’s reminded me of a peony garden I once visited in Japan. Beautiful.
My dark pink and white peonies are already over, but the new pale pink is about to burst for the first time. Happy!

  2. gorgeous, Karen, thank you! Peonies bloom for about five minutes here in early May and I always loved visiting Sara in the summer in Madison and getting to see (and smell!!) them as they were meant to be.

  3. Gorgeous! I do love peonies. Ours are over now. I am no expert but do you think the fertiliser might be preventing them flowering? Plants often flower more when they are starved.

  4. Thanks for the gorgeous peony walk. I love them. We had 11 bushes and I never fertilized them. One set of bulbs (maybe 5 plants) I bought at Costco 10 years ago didn’t bloom much until last spring and then they were loaded.

  5. Beautiful! I love blousy Peonies, with their layers of uncurling petals. They remind me of my grandad who had a row in the front garden. My own attempts at growing them were unsuccessful and it’s a shame your own plants did not produce many flowers, perhaps your nurturing will pay off next year. At least you can enjoy these in the Park meanwhile, and we tentatively ventured to a local garden this week that reopened. They had a beautiful display of peonies, they can be breath taking. Funny, it’s making me wonder why I never leant down to smell them, but they were probably too far back in the border. I’m curious now as to whether they are scented!
Thank you for sharing these photos and taking part in 5in5 Karen. It is always a joy to see your link.

  6. I love theses crumpled flowers – so blowsy and rich and ‘hey, look at me!’. I’m sorry your own have not bloomed as well as you’d hoped this year, but it must be lovely to have some nearby.
