Frugal Still Life: Week 2

  • by

It’s getting toward the end of Week 2 at Cheryl McCain’s Frugal Still Life class. I’ve know all week what I wanted to use for my subject, but time is just slipping through my fingers here. Finally, today I got it all set up.

I’ve become a big fan of organic brown eggs. I looked around for the right size container to hold a dozen eggs, and decided on my berry bowl. It’s navy blue on the outside, so I pulled out my handloomed table runner as a background. One of the considerations for this week was to leave some “white” or negative space in your photo. That’s a technique I like quite a bit.

I used my 18-270 Tamron lens for all the shots, and ended up with four I liked. Which one most appeals to you?

Usually when I shoot a half shot, I have the subject on the left-hand side rather than the right-hand side. This wasn’t thought through completely, and I think I’d prefer it if it were reversed.

This top down shot might be my favorite.

I decided on a square crop for this one.

And here’s one on the left-hand side, but with a different point of view. I have to admit I like taking the time to try a lot of different shots. These are the four I liked best, but I took quite a few more.

  1. Karen: Yes, I like the top down best. But I also really like the square crop: it’s unusual and fits here perfectly. Nice strong, intense colors in these which I like!.
Thanks for visiting; see you again later this week I hope!

  2. Hi Kare. I love seeing brown eggs too. There is something about seeing that makes me want to stroke them as if they were soft, brown suede. I think my favorite photo is your last one. I like how they monopolize the lower and middle left of the photo with the contrast of the soft yellow bowl and vibrant blue runner. Very nice.

  3. I had a hard time deciding which I liked best but think I lean towards your last image that you cropped square. I like the softness with your depth of field behind the bowl.

  4. I think the first one is my favorite. I like the table-level perspective and the ability to see the design on the bowl. I think the right hand side placement and the amount of white space at the top of the photo.

  5. I think I like the first one best….which slightly surprises me as I’m not usually a lover of white space……but it all seems to balance so well.

  6. I’m doing a lot of blog-reading catch-up today. Loved the pelican shots – hard to imagine them being taller than me though! Love your cards. I am going to have to come pin a bunch of them for ideas so that I can see them in one place! And for this group of photos… They are all great but I think I’m partial to the square crop. And I couldn’t even tell you exactly why. Isn’t it crazy how subjective art is? We all like different ones for different reasons… or in my case, no reason at all.

  7. Tis hard to find eggs that aren’t brown in the UK… I like that top down shot the best, the texture from the runner is lovely against the smooth eggs. Such a restful piece.

  8. I think I’m going to switch to buying brown organic eggs all the time too! Not only do they taste better, but I just love the color. Your photos are great, Karen, and I think the square crop is actually my favorite. :o) Have a great weekend!
