Frugal Still Life: Week 3

  • by

This week Cheryl had a guest photographer at Frugal Still Life who shared her set-up as well as a beautiful still life composition. Cheryl challenged us to work on a similar composition with three items. At this time of year, I regularly buy flowers at the grocery store to brighten the long winter days. I had these lovely white astromeria on the dining room table, and decided on a still life around three white items. I found (and ironed!) a beautiful hand-embroidered tablecloth that belonged to my mother as the backdrop. If you look closely you can see a bit of the beautiful stitching. Here are a variety of shots. As always, I’m interested to know which shot you prefer.

Here’s what the set-up looked like. I draped the tablecloth over a piece of folded white board on our kitchen table. This is the only room in the house that gets good light even though it’s a northern exposure.

  1. Karen: I really like these, and the all white theme! I like #2 best I think: I always like the close up shots and all the detail… so then I also like #4. My background is in designing ceramic dinnerware, so of course, I zeroed right in on the pitcher and cup. Love love . That table cloth is beautiful especially the diaphanous quality and what a perfect backdrop.

  2. Well, first off I love that you used your Mother’s hand embroidered table cloth, LOVELY! I’m looking and looking for a favorite because they’re all super shots! I’m leaning towards #4 but I’m liking the shot looking down on your arrangement too, oh shoot, love them all!

  3. These are all beautiful photos. I think my favorite is the second one because you are able to see the detail on the cup and vase. I also like the cropping you did with the flowers not completed on the top and left of the scene.

  4. The last one is my favourite (before the set up shot) the composition, the light and the white…just perfect for me. I have a friend who paints, he loves the light from the north.

  5. Hi Karen ~ I’m catching up this morning and loving your still life photos! That white tablecloth as a backdrop is beautiful, and my favorite shot is the second one – just something about the composition that I love. And gosh I love that vase and tea cup!!!

  6. These are all lovely, but I like the second one best. It has a really interesting perspective. The last one is also nice, but the second one has more character to me.
